Paper mill guarded by bees in MA

Before it was shut down in the 90's, this mill produced high-quality bond paper. It's located in a weird, isolated community off of a highway. There's two bridges that cross over the river in the middle, one of which is abandoned and blocked off on either side with 7 foot walls of concrete bricks. When I crossed over that abandoned bridge a truck showed up and waited on the other side but left when I turned around and got off the way I came, so for some reason security pays attention to the bridge but not the abandoned 7 story structure next to it. There's two parts of the mill, one on either side of the river, both with accessible roofs. There were loads of stuff laying around inside both of the buildings. The exterior of the mill had a lot of machinery and metal platforms and stairs, very fun to climb around on. The front of one of the buildings for some reason had a bunch of those beekeeping hives, and they were very much active, no idea why they were there.

Does that monitor have screen burn??

Also, very curious about the attention they pay to the abandoned bridge. Makes me wonder what's up with it.

Looks like it does, didn't notice it until I looked at the picture.

And I'm guessing it would have something to do with the hole in the middle of the bridge that drops straight into a rocky, fast-moving river

I do not miss the days of screen burn.

And Wtf they have to guard a hole for? Don't fall in the hole. It's big and obvious. If you fall in the hole you get a Darwin award. It's not hard to not fall in the hole.

Yeah it doesn't make sense to me either, it's not even a big hole. It's like 2 feet wide and off to the side of the bridge. No idea why they would be constantly watching the bridge just for that, you'd think the 7 foot tall blockades and the Violaters Will Be Prosecuted sign would be enough to keep them from being sued or whatever their fear is.

Awesome pictures, the bridge thing is kind of strange though. Have you tried looking it up online? Maybe there's a news article or something about it!

I've tried but I can only find info on the mill, not the nearby bridge. Maybe I just suck at researching

The hole in the road probably fucked up some scion's Aston Martin or shitty Maserati.

Great photo of the roof and mill chimney! I visited this place recently. In the newer mill I noticed bales of recycled paper and rolls of sheet paper. Also, rolls of labels for tennis balls, Bigelow tea and Durkee meatloaf among other products. I think they produced these labels in addition to the bond paper. The adjacent powerhouse is a nice addition although thoroughly stripped by scrappers. Between the old and new mills, we spent over three hours in the village. Some examples of mill housing can also been seen in the village. Definitely a worthwhile trip.

I know that, but do you have any idea how many different processes there are to manufacture paper?
I ask because I worked in a paper mill for almost 11 years and I am interested in older paper mills.

Nice pictures. I was there a few days ago. I only saw the outside but I would like to go inside next trip. There is a small building in the back area next to the river, have you been in it yet? I would like to go in but it looks like there's a lot of water damage.

The small building in the back was the wastewater treatment plant. The lower level is flooded but the upper levels are accessible.
