A friend of mine showed us this place a few days ago. We have speculated that it is part of the local water treatment plant, but we aren't certain. It was a short explore, but what we saw was pretty interesting. I'm not the best at taking photos, so advice on what I can do better is welcomed.

1. There was glass in those windows..

2.

3. Watch your step!

4. Makes you wonder what happened to the person who broke the rungs on the ladder..

5. Shocking

6. Looks like it needs some calibration.

7. Up the stairway to heaven.. Erm, maybe not.

8.

9.

10. Dead end

11. That's an estimated 20 feet from the concrete beam to the riverbed below.

This may be the end of the post, but you ain't seen the end of me!

I think you are right; that looks like a waterworks. One of my favorite spots to go to when I was younger was an abandoned waterworks, and it was mostly pipes and these large concrete containment tanks that looked very similar to what is pictured in 7-9.

Definitley, the accumulation of moss was crazy around there.

I can say with 10000000% certainty that was a water treatment plant at one time. How does it smell? LOL Those square-ish bins are individual treatment cells where you adjust the BOD, COD, Free residual chlorine, etc and allow the good bacteria to break down things into more environmentally friendly forms. There was probably a rock sprayer or an oxidation pond somewhere nearby. From the looks of it - it was for a medium-ish sized population. Really rural plants use only a rock sprayer and oxidation pond, huge cities have these cells for literally a square mile but medium cities, its a mish mash of the two forms.

Really neat find - I want microbes from the sides of those cells - those are some survivors!

Thanks for sharing them.

EDIT - upon looking at the pics a couple more times, I don't think this is a big enough WW plant to warrant treatment CELLS. It looks more like a grid so they could walk over the treatment area and adjust what needed adjusting based on samples. Anyone else with a background in water quality care to weigh in?

Yep - wastewater treatment plant. This is a chlorine pump & gauge. It would pump the "finishing" - or free residual disinfectant - into the outflow waters. Like a little parting "y'all be good now" before sending the treated water back out into the bad world. (I like to anthropomorphize my work....helps when its stinky......)

This is such a cool find. I wish I had unlimited time and money to hunt these things down. I can go to active wastewater plants - but....um....the stank ain't for the faint hearted and I will stick to my lab with the vent fan on thank ya!

Keep sending the pictures though so I can live vicariously.

It really didn't have much of a smell to thankfully. It's very close to a hiking trail so I suppose that wouldn't be very appealing to people passing by.

I really haven't looked around in that area very much, so it's possible you may be correct. I will head back over there sometime soon and look around for some more places.

That's where it's interesting. The walls that run the length of it are actually dividers. The ones perpendicular to those seem to just bridge across. What we couldn't figure out was the function of those wooden boards hanging in the water by metal strips (I'll attach a pic):

so I have an answer for ya! Yeah, I get to be useful today.

The ladders go down into the cells/settlement/treatment areas so if something gets clogged, they can dislodge it. Just really that simple. Its for that and routine maintenance. The pits/grids/cells, etc. do these two functions. They allow the solids to "settle" to the bottom and the top water is then both adjusted for BOD and COD and then separated thru a filter to the finishing area. The sludge at the bottom could have been either trap door dropped to a loading area below (the activated sludge is disposed of as solid waste per EPA regs) OR they had pump lines to pump the activated sludge out to a holding tank. It would sit there until full or they had a waste pick up day. It would depend on what you saw at the bottom. I would guess there were pipes pumping the sludge to a tank. That's more common.

I would post a picture of a WW treatment plant, but they really do vary quite a bit. The general flow is the same bc the goals are the same, but how they reach it....different.

1.Roughing filter, or settling basin, to remove large particles and debris.

2.Coagulation and flocculation to induce opposite charges, which brings molecular-sized bacteria and harmful particles together to form even larger particles, followed by sedimentation to settle the now large groups of particles (flocs) out of the water.

3.Secondary filtration to remove bacteria, algae, and any other small flocs still present in the water.

4.Chlorination to destroy any remaining bacteria, viruses and pathogens.

5.Aeration to remove undesired odors or tastes caused by Steps 1-4.

6.Additional treatment, if necessary, such as adding lime (for softening) or fluoride.

Ah sewage.....lets me know how far I have NOT come in my career. LOL. I started out as a co op for EPD in water quality, and now I am in human poop swabs and disease. I think we have figured out why I'm single..... I'm gross.

Y'all have a super day!
