I recently had a most unpleasant experience that involved biting flies. Evidently, deet does not deter them from taking chunks out of your scalp.
I recommend avoiding biting flies whenever possible.

Ouch. I hate that.

Hibernating black bear with cubs in the basement of a partially burnt out building. They had built a den into the corner where the floor above had partially collapsed, making a mini cave. Was in the middle of nowhere in early March, so that was good at least. Likely would have gotten killed if it/they were closer to waking. Bears are bastards on a good day. With cubs around, they turn into murder machines.

This is also why I carry a handgun on me with bear loads and rifle in the truck.

Either way, it was a 'brown pants' moment to say the least. Quietly and very quickly unassed the area. Forever off the list of spots to get into. At least it was miles from anywhere on shitty back roads, so the odds of anyone else going there before it collapsed entirely were pretty slim.

Edited to clarify.

Yikes!
Animals with young are dangerous as piss.
Especially big ones with teeth and claws.

Yeah, it was certainly the biggest 'oh shit' moment in the last decade I'd say. Wasn't the biggest sow I've seen, but I'd still venture 5' or better and 350 pounds minimum.

So just a couple years old, first litter is my guess. They can get a lot bigger up here though. Thankfully other than some wolves and moose, I haven't seen anything that could kill me. Mostly grouse, ptarmigan, squirrels, etc. Moose are at least (usually) easy to get away from unless they charge. If I see any fresh wolf tracks, I'm not even bothering to poke around. Not worth it. A couple of the packs up here are way outside the norm. F&G culled one a while back that was near 100 members, when it should have been 15 max.

Either way, that's more shots than my revolver carries, and I doubt I'd have a few seconds to reload if it came to it.

Speaking of which, they put out a warning that a grizzly killed a moose in someone's yard a mile or two from me. So walking the dog is armed now. And people wonder why where I live is the heaviest armed place in the US lol.

Other than the usual Black Widows and such, I had a Barn Owl fly at my face. I walked into a side room of a house I was exploring. It was perched up near the ceiling but I didn't see it until it flew at me. I kinda swung at it with my tripod. It just turned around and flew out the hole in the wall that was underneath it's perch. Not dangerous like bears, but it gets the adrenaline flowing when you're not expecting it!

Nice shot! I didn't have a chance to take a picture.

Those things sure can make such a horrible sound. Quite unnerving, especially if you're exploring alone at night and don't know what it is...

Once went to this one abandoned spot with aggressive hissing geese outside. There was also a deer thrashing about by the fence near my POE and it ran past me, just a few feet away from contact.

I've had them come up from behind me at night in the starlight and glide by within a few feet of my head.
A little unnerving as they are completely silent when gliding, even when flapping their wings in level flight I don't know if you can hear them.
The mice never knew what hit them.
Cool critters.

First time I ever heard one of those barn owls was in BFE west Texas. I thought I had died and gone straight to hell. Fortunately, I was able to compose myself before I made a complete ass of myself. Man, that thing scared the living shit out of me, lol.

That's the sound all barn owls make before the swoop down and pull your scalp off.

We were sitting out at the Marfa roadside park thing back in the 90s waiting for the legendary the Marfa lights to appear, at which point a barn owl came flittering into the crowd of about 20 people about 10ft high just silently going from one group to the next. We all got away without losing our scalps or other body parts but it was real weird owl behavior in my opinion, maybe he was searching for Cheetos. Or scalps.

Some where Ive got a pic of an actual screech owl I took in Dallas.

In the mean time enjoy other terrifying animals Ive shot. (with camera)

1. Walked up on a bison. Bison up close. I wasn't terrified but I did keep some big trees between us. Nobody claims her, she is running loose on a 500ac oil lease probably escaped from a local ranch. Do not mess with them. This one is small by comparison 800-900lbs bulls can be over 2000lbs

2. Infamous "blue" coyote, yeah the color thing is real not edited its caused by the mange. Ive seen bluer ones but this is the only one Ive got a shot (camera) at.

So, I live in critter central I could go on and on but it wont be fair and honestly most of the next 40 or so pics I post will have nothing to do with urban explorating.. I gave up hunting with bows and firearms 30yrs ago and only shoot pics now.

Oh wait I did shoot this little guy with a 9mm handgun recently, but it was him or me haha..

1. In my yard. Copperhead. About 30 inches of pain, fasciotomy, and $60k to $100k in emergency room bills IF he tags ya and its not a dry bite. Like I said better him than me!

Bison are dangerous... no thanks.
I won't kill rattle snakes but copperheads I really don't like. Not aggressive but one in your garden can really ruin the day.
Their venom is less potent than a rattle snake's but a bite on the finger can cost you the finger or use of it.
Be careful in the garden...

I had a black bear appear out of nowhere and charge me from the forest at dusk. Before I knew it, my stick was up in my left hand, my gun in my right and a mighty "HEYYYYYYYYYY!" came out of me. It stopped its run immediately (60ft?) and we had a staring contest for what seemed like forever. I knew not to waver my stance and not to turn away. Eventually after the longest staredown, I was like, this is ridiculous and I did something I thought every JR high kid and animal just had to know: "the we don't have to do this if you don't want, but I'm not backing down" move - without moving any other part of me and without breaking eye contact, I took one step back. That's it. And not 3 seconds after, the bear turned and left. It was an awesome experience. What is supposed to work worked, and, what I hoped would work did also. We entered into an agreement and fear never entered the equation during or after. It was awesome and I'll go on trusting bears.

Now cats. Nopes.
Twice I've come across where they'd been- once at the back of a mine where deer bones were scattered, and the other time was at the back of a low concrete mining building I stooped into at night and found an eaten deer carcass. Both times I had to force myself to turn and slowly leave the area with chills down my spine wondering where it was hiding until I got clear and far. Bear (Arizona=black bears) tracks don't phase me but the big prints with no claws do and I hate finding them fresh.

Last September, the wife and I were hiking out from revisiting an abandoned fire tower where we first met. She was wearing the headlamp and I had my bright light to turn on and throw some flash every once in a while. Towards the end of the hike, I did my why-not bright lighthouse spin and I found yellow eyes. They weren't far but I couldn't tell what kind of cat it was, only that it was hiding next to a dead tree the same color. It would not blink unless the light left its direct sight. I took a couple steps towards it and it finally got up and walked along another deadfall where I could finally see its size. It settled back down in another spot where only its eyes showed again perpendicular to our path- still unblinking bright yellow reflections. I had Noel start down the path in front of me with instructions that I'd be right behind her faced backwards and to tell me if there were any potholes/obstructions. We walked like that with my bright flashlight on those eyes until they were finally out of sight and we were back to the vehicle.

I don't like big cats that like to F with you and kill because they're just bored.

Ok, so this files more neatly under rural exploring, but it is totally a terrifying animal encounter, and you made me want to share my bear story, skatchkins:

Once while camping, a fellow camper woke me up and told me a bear was in our camp. I silently pulled my knife out from under my pillow like I was gonna take care of the bear problem, if everyone would just sit tight. When I don't know what else to do, I try to play for comedy.

Once outside, everyone else--there were four of us total--was standing around watching this bear on its tip toes just barely grasping the bear bag we had strung up the night before in his teeth. He was teetering and flailing his arms to keep balance as he reached. Honestly, it was pretty cute.

We linked all our arms and started stomping and shouting, and the bear wanted no part of what we hoped looked like an angry four-headed and eight-legged monster and dipped out...to a place further down the trail where another tent was pitched.

The bear started sniffing the door of the tent, so we Voltronned right back up into our monster form and made as though to charge the bear, who lumbered off into the deeper woods.

Later, we come to find that those guys in the other tent had a bunch of raw elk meat inside the tent with them, and they were both training shotguns on the door of the tent just waiting for the bear to give them an excuse. Were they baiting bears to justifiably shoot one? Why else would anyone keep meat in their tent in bear country?

We didn't talk to them much after that. We were just glad that we were mentally prepared enough to prevent a scene of which we wanted absolutely no part.

I came face to face with a suitcase sized Raccoon in a dumpster outside an apartment building being renovated. He was eating pork fried rice. I looked at him for about 5 seconds and he watched me, still chewing. Then I went to the other side of the dumpster and started looking around. He went back to eating. We never bothered each other.

Glad I checked the dumpster though, that's how I got my xbox 360, a portable hard drive, a usb windows 8 boot stick, and a CD wallet filled with burned OS installation disks and a few more usb drives.

Never really had a scary ANIMAL encounter. Unless you count the animal driving the dumptruck into an abandoned factory, HONKING his horn and making me break my ankle.
