You'd be hard pressed to find someone more scattered than I am

I don't know about that- I used to have a small hand drawn map (and I can't draw to save my life) and notebook of locations that I had to stop using after it became too disorganized for even me to understand (so like a week or two into having it)

I've seen somone trip and fall to their death. Still haven't really gotten over it.

Had he maintained hold onto something when he jumped off the platform he'd be with us today.l, but he jumped down without any points of contact and fell right on a third rail.

Do not take your balance for granted.

I was in an old school that had been closed for about 30 years. The floor was sagging on the second story- the only way we could gain entrance. I told the guys to leave rather than put all their weight on that rotten wooden floor. We did end up leaving the building rather than risking it. I'm happy with the call we made.

You can try walking near the walls or laying a plank, etc down to act as a bridge.
This can get very tricky.
Always one person at a time.

I did that to shoot an antique X-ray machine at Pennhurst and it was sketchy with a long drop.
Had a floor collapse from under me once, I out ran it; fast reflexes and luck. It's a very disconcerting feeling.

Better to bug out and live to splore another day...

They suggested trying that, but I just didn't feel like it was worth the risk. The place was very small and ultimately had very little to offer.

A wise choice. Risk verses reward.
If there's little or no reward, it's not worth it.
Members here have been seriously hurt and killed.
Almost everyone who explores long enough will put a foot through a floor, have one collapse or worse.
Sometimes shooting the images through a window or doorway etc is the best way.

Experience helps decrease the possibility of life altering accidents while exploring; start slow and explore at the level you are comfortable with. Only you should determine what that level is and if the reward justifies the risk. In time you will have a broader knowledge base to draw from to make critical decisions.

Know when to bug out; you won't be exploring anything good if you're busted up or arrested.

Never bunch up when moving; nuck, nuck, nuck spread out! If a stairs, ladder, catwalk, floor, etc gives way you don't want more than one victim. Staggering your distance also gives each person more room to maneuver if they need to move fast.
Last thing you want is a person running or falling on you in a collapse.

Never stop thinking; If you do find yourself in a the middle of a structural failure or freefall keep your eyes wide open, and look for a way out!
Never give up no matter how bad it looks; freezing up, giving up kills.
If you're alive... you have a chance.

When exploring never move especially back step without looking.
Verify it's solid, every time.
Or you may verify there's no heaven...

http://gothamist.c...ngs_fall_death.php

This catwalk is safe... if you are.
Don't think you'll be able to catch yourself once you begin a freefall. He probable tried, witness the fact the cam didn't fall with him, but after falling about 3 feet your velocity makes grabbing and securing a hold on anything almost impossible.
https://www.angio....l/climb/speed.html
That only works in the movies and cartoons.

There are locations much more dangerous than this.
You get one shot at it; you have to get it right and not fall.
When climbing or at height there is no "if I fall".
Falls and structural collapses are your #1 hazard when exploring.

This is a common fatal mistake when crossing RR tracks.
Two (or more) tracks and two trains (or more) synced for a kill.
NEVER assume there's only one or no train; always verify there's no train in both directions.
Many have tried to outrun one train and won, only to be sent straight to hell by a second unseen train on another rail.

http://www.dailyma...deling-tracks.html

High heels and RR tracks/gradings don't mix well either.
Whatever were her mistakes, consider them all corrected... permanently.

There have been FMs who have died while exploring unfortunately.
It's all too easy to do what happened to them.
They have my empathy... I've been one step away from oblivion and barely caught myself in time. Was left sitting on the last or second step of a steel staircase that had been cut away in midsection. A 20 foot drop to concrete in a silo with no cell service, alone (not that it mattered).
Only fast reflexes and a good hand grip on the hand rail saved me.
It was quit sobering to be sitting there looking down with my feet dangling midair... I continued to explore a bit wiser then before.

When you're preoccupied or tired it is especially dangerous.
Always keep your mind and flashlight where on your feet and hands are/going when moving even if it seems "safe" especially at height. Being at height includes stair and structures having levels or sublevels, below floor vats, tanks etc. Expect the unexpected... including holes large and small in otherwise sound floors.

This accident was stupid and completely preventable.
3 points of contact when climbing, always.
"Plant" yourself securely before you shoot when climbing or when falling is an obvious risk.
This should be common sense.
You get one shot at it.
There is no try. Do it or don't*.
Results are final.

Additional info:

https://www.google...ie-trnd/index.html

She lost her balance on bolts or rivet heads and fell backwards... amateur.

*Case in point. There is no try.
Avoid jumping whenever possible; conserve your knees, back... and ligaments.
Once in a freefall you have little or no control especially at heights under 100 feet.
Never never bunch up on ladders(one at a time), when climbing, on catwalks, stairs, roofs and floors; one peanut/KIA is bad enough.

Yet another preventable KIA from jumping.
Not an explorer but doing something just everyone has done; jumping a gape with a long drop.
2 stories was all it took.

http://www.foxnews...g-during-game.html

Avoid jumping whenever possible.
Stay in control by maintaining contact.

Sometimes hellholes are self made.
In confined spaces, one breathe may be your last.
If attempting a rescue it is imperative you don't breath until clear.
If you can't do this, get trained rescuers.
High levels of HS2 and other poisonous gases can cause you to gasp involuntary even if you hold your breathe, game over.
Better one dead than three.
This happens a lot.
Know when to bug out!
There's no glory in being a dead victim.

The tight-knit country NSW town where three family members were found dead inside an empty water tank is struggling to come to terms with the tragic loss of the well-liked and respected trio.

Andrew Basnett, his wife Anne and brother Richard all died after becoming overcome by what's believed to be carbon monoxide fumes inside the tank at their farm outside Gunning, near Yass, on Thursday afternoon.
Andrew, 69, was using a high-pressure water pump to clean the empty in-ground cement tank when he collapsed.
Richard, 68, jumped in to check on him, but he too succumbed to the fumes and fell to the ground.
Anne, 63, suffered the same fate after she climbed in to help the pair.
"There was a petrol pump being used to clean the tank and that may have been the cause of the build of fumes at the bottom of the water tank," police superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis said on Friday.
A neighbour, who Anne had alerted before she climbed into the tank, found the trio just after 6pm on Thursday.

Their bodies remained in the tank overnight as rescue specialists waited for the gases to dissipate.
Yass Valley Deputy Mayor and close friend Kim Turner says the close-knit town of Gunning - which has a population of about 450 - is still coming to grips with the deaths.
"They were wonderful community people and very well respected sheep breeders," he told AAP, adding Andrew and Anne were always willing to help "anyone in need".
"It's horrendous. It's hard to imagine any circumstances other than a car accident where you wipe our three members of one family."
The Basnetts leave behind three adult children aged in their 20s and 30s and several grandchildren.
The couple's farm Nerragundah is at Oolong, about 10 kilometres from Gunning.
They were the 2016 Gunning Flock Ewe competition winners at last year's Gunning Show. The 2017 show is this Sunday.
Mr Koutsoufis said the deaths, which aren't being treated as suspicious, had affected surrounding farming communities and emergency service personnel.
"There is a wide-ranging impact when heartbreaking events such as this occur in rural towns," he said.
Emergency services called to the property on Thursday night have been offered counselling.

Here's a death vid of a kid trying to do something he be lucky to get away with.
He wasn't lucky.
A sad way to go for a 14 yo.
He was at height on a RR bridge and very close to high voltage transmission lines.
He was distracted by the vid his friend taking and not taking his climb as a life or death event.
It appears as if he deliberately made contact with the line.

https://m.liveleak...w?i=7fb_1426831614

If you don't -know- what you're doing, avoid climbs with exposure to high voltage.
They are doable but the danger is real with no room for error.
You must maintain a safe distance at all times. Conditions and the voltage dictate what is safe; it varies.

Always think things through before you move.

Going to a abandoned hotel with a weak flashlight has been one of my bigger mistakes. I had to resort using my phone flashlight half way though, which was not that very helpful. I arrived at the location with decent sunlight and was using it as my main source of light, this only lasted for so long in the mazelike interior

As I made it to the third floor, going in and out of each room in darkness, it became repetition. I rounded the corner to make it a few steps towards another room in dim light. I realized that it was not another room, but an elevator shaft with it doors open.

You would be surprised on how different things look in poor lighting, and I would not be surprised if someone in my position actually would have walked the rest of the way. People are mindless, it's sad actually. This location was in such a bad state that you could not tell the difference. Some of the rooms had no doors and was pitch black inside, no red flags went up. It was too similar

Check your equipment always, you never know what could work one day and stop the next. Be safe out there

Teen dies after falling eleven stories in Midland Texas
Posted: Sun 7:53 PM, Aug 13, 2017  |
Updated: Mon 8:52 AM, Aug 14, 2017

MIDLAND -- One teen is dead after falling 11 stories from the Western United Life building in Midland.
Around 10 p.m. Saturday night it was reported that a teen had fallen to his death in Downtown Midland.
The teen was identified as John Butler, 16. According to the Midland Police Department. Butler and other juveniles were playing inside of the building with air-soft rifles when he fell through a hole that extended through all floors.

MPD Communications Specialist Rachel Walker says that the building is abandoned and that the juveniles did not have permission to be inside.
CBS 7's Stephanie Bennett spoke with a friend of Butler, who says he will be greatly missed at school.
“Everyone was his best friend. He was the type of person you don't have to talk to every day to be your best friend but he was always there.”

School's out forever...
