Nice colors and lines.
I like the windows...
Take time to square up the shots; the window shots suffer especially because they aren't squared off.
The closest portion of the subject should be parallel to R/L of the pic frame.
That shot with the ladder and wheel barrel I really like, but if it could be squared off it would have come out better.

Nice shots! I especially like the first and sixth. Windows are cool.

You said you explored it alone--have you ever had trouble exploring alone as a female (safety-wise)? I'm a little cautious to go places alone, but obviously you haven't died yet

Not being critical; I like the place and the images or I wouldn't have posted or given you the likes.

I have hundreds of boned pics that would have keepers when I first started... -except- I failed to square them up or compose them properly.
Always shoot for a keeper. You get one shot at it, post editing can't save them if these two critical parameters aren't met, no matter how good the subject. Your WB and exposure are near spot on.
Even blur is more tolerable in an action shot than bad framing... learn from my mistakes, the easy way.

That tall ladder gives you a perfect tall makeshift tripod; use it next time you visit there. You can get the perfect height or angle off using it.
Brace the cam on the steps or side rails of it. A small towel to rest the cam on helps.
Doesn't get any better than that for one of a kind shots.

I didn't take it as critical......I do appreciate the comments, and know they are coming from a helpful place.
I take pictures that please me, but always open to advise. I am not a photographer and I know it...I am in it for the explore, the photos just provide a way to remember and share....I dont post in the photo critique area because I am not striving to become a photographer and I have at least 5 photographer friends that critique my photos...
funny thing is that they tell me the exact same thing....

All of your comments are spot on....I know my weaknesses with photography..
Oh and I did go up on top of that ladder....I took 700 shots here....this was probably my last visit here...

Am cautious.....but I haven't ever run into anything worse than the police department and that wasn't so bad, LOL! There are certainly worse things.....I would certainly be more careful at inner city locations...and I don't always go alone.
I have found that I do seem to enjoy exploring alone... having other people with me distracts me ...I have discovered that I have a issue with focus!
I have found that being quiet and stealthy is best.

Blackhawk,
I did not mean to sound unappreciative of your comments....I just truly do not comprehend. I do not know what a "boned out" pic is, and I don't know how to edit anything yet....(that's one of the things some of my friends are on to me about), I don't know what WB and exposure is.... i'm really not sure what you mean about framing.... but I do hear that often so I will start working on that. As far as focus I may be able to get better focus when I get my eyeglasses next week...lol.
The wide angle lens I use has no auto focus so I really don't know how I manage to get any shots with it... I just set it on infinity.
Thank you again for taking the time... I just wanted you to know what a novice you are dealing with here. Now I feel this pressure to up the game for the next post so it may be a while...

Boned; screwed beyond redemption
Normally I don't comment much on this, but #7 was so close to be a knock out keeper it I felt sad for you.
As I told you in the PM, these are above average images and certainly worthy of posting on a site dedicated to exploring.
I tend to be blunt, but being rude was not my intent.

Continue to post; meaningful posts and images are always welcomed on UER.
I personally like sites like the one you shot.
You are correct, people not matter how well meaning are a distraction.
Distractions can ruin shots and worse.
I prefer solo almost every time.
The most important thing is that you enjoy what you are doing...
Thank you for sharing.

Go through the threads on the Photo Critiques forum.
You can get a lot of useful knowledge especially from the FMs there.
You can find very useful links there as well; I have posted links to a couple excellent sites.
There are still some top notch shooters here.
Feel free to post a thread there if you like.
There are no stupid questions... or perfect pictures.

This looks like a nice spot, Johnna. And I really like the last photo, lovely composition!

I'll also chime in on the solo explore thing. This topic comes up from time to time, if you go to the rookie forum, there's a category for it in the 'common thread topics' thread.

Anyway, I used to explore alone all the time, and never had a problem.* It's really rare to run into people. When it happened I always made a point to avoid them and if that was impossible, I'd casually acknowledge their presence and casually GTFO. Maybe I've been too cavalier, but it's really never been a big deal, and I've done quite a lot of solo exploring (in fact my first crane climb was solo and I’ve also squatted alone and done unfamiliar cities/new locations alone).

* there was a frightening misunderstanding that led to me being blocked into a room by a strange man threatening me with a baseball bat. We quickly reached an understanding though - I wasn't there to fuck with the semi-feral cats that lived in the building, and he wasn't there to fuck with me (he was there to feed the cats).

oh yes....I have encountered the feral cat person...they will KILL you if they think you are there to hurt the cats...
when all this first started I was always looking for people to go exploring with and schedules and work( damn that work) always gets in the way.
So if I didn't go alone....Well Id be sitting home.
Now I prefer it alone..

Damn, is that what this place looks like on the inside? I drive past this building weekly, and have always wanted to know what the inside looks like.

Thanks for the post!

I used to live in walking distance of the place and have a gnarly scar on my head from helping clear the trees from along the fence. If you go in the main floor where Perry (Daytona Hot Rods - the current owner) keeps some of his cars you will find an early 70s Honda motorcycle. That is my bike. I still have a gate key somewhere.

If you didn't get to see the other building (the one built in the 1890s), or this one before they pulled the floors and elevator motors you really missed out.

Also, check out the mill in Rock Hill over near Winthrop. After the fire a few years back they really kicked up security but there are some AMAZING machines that make it worth the risk.
