Exploration of my childhood church.

I recently got permission to go through an old church which closed in 2009. Up until then I was baptized here, got my first communion and spent almost every Sunday of my childhood in this church. The guy who let me in showed me some spots upstairs (The organ area and attic) and then left me alone to go and do whatever I wanted. The altar and stained glass were immediately removed after the closure which sucked, and the only thing that was untouched was the confession booth which was creepy. Other than workers helping to clean it out and move stuff I was the only to ever be able to photograph the inside and I couldn't be more grateful to get that privilege before it is fully renovated into a circus school.

Unlike the other two churchs in my hometown (only 1 still open) This was the only one without beams in coming down from the ceiling due to the fact it had a steel frame to support the ceiling.

View from where the altar would have been.

This is some good stuff. I've never noticed this church going through the town. Love the murals.

It's not in the best part of town.. Closest one to the ocean though!

never was a religious person, but seeing churches close saddens me, not the loss of a place of worship but the loss of what was once the center of a community. the handshake business deals in the door to the church, the parties, socials, dances etc in the church basement, when people knew their neighbors...

It is sad when churches close up. But your pictures are awesome and the place looks like it is still in relatively good shape. Those murals are very cool as well. Pry a good thing they pulled the stained glass, some moron would have pry made that their first target.

I love that you had a personal story with this location. For some reason I find abandoned places of worship insanely interesting, as well as theaters.. I think from a photographic standpoint it's due the linear aspects of the rows and rows of seats they provide. Anyways, I'm happy you were able to get in there before it gets renovated- beautiful photos!

Thank you! it truly was amazing to walk through this place one last time while it is still somewhat original. Also, I couldn't agree more with what you and the two people before said! churches to me will always be the best explore regardless of if you are religious or not. I think that this is true because of the feeling that a place of worship could just close down like that and decay into disrepair or into a depressing state.

Hmm, this isn't in Portland... is it?

Exterior shot looks a lot like the church I used to live next to on Sherman St...
