New Texas User saying Hi and asking a question. (Edited with Pics)

Hello guys and girls. I introduced myself a bit in the main rookie area but plan to spend most my time in here.

I live in Texas, couple hours South of Houston near the coast. Not too much urbex to do in my town, rural is a little bit of a challenge with very active farming and ranching in the area.

my exploration style is a full tank of gas and no plan. Just picking a direction and trying to get lost.

Time is my handicap so my explores are not often and sometimes not as involved as I would care for. Trying to talk a friend into joining me. He is ok with driving around but hesitant to enter places.

Was out and about yesterday and found an old high school all boarded up. Back door had been forced open. Unfortunately I was ill prepared, usually have flashlight and other things in my car but yesterday did not. Too dark to walk around inside so had to settle for a couple of pictures just inside the door. Plan on returning soon, before they fix the door!

Now for the question portion. Not a how to question but a location question. I'm really curious if anyone has hit up the defunct Texas supercollider?? I found a few pictures online but nothing really extensive. From google earth it looks like it might have been repurposed and have activity these days. But I know it sat vacant for a while.

I have another area outside San Antonio that I am really interested in but am hesitant to post it, I've never seen any urbex from there.

Nothing to show right now, I'm on my phone. I'll post a couple shortly though.

Edit: Told you it would be shortly.

One is the back of the school I came across, the other is from inside. As stated I had no flashlight, and with the windows boarded up it was pitch black in there, lots of yellow jackets, spiders, wasps and other things that want to cause me pain that I do not feel like stumbling around in the dark with currently. lol

It isn't entirely gone, the tunnels still exist however they are flooded and you would need some serious gear.

Oh well, this question will bring the goof balls and trolls out of the shadows for sure it always does

to be more precise, its not "gone" the collider never was, the project was abandoned for a variety of reasons before it was completed

and he didn't ask if it was still there he asked if anyone has "hit it up" a phrase people like to use to sound hip I guess but Im sure he meant has anyone been there, answer: yes

parts of it are still there, its been explored numerous times, try the search feature http://www.uer.ca/..._search1.asp?fid=1

lots of pics and discussions on here

...or you could become a permanent resident of the tunnel complex.
A lot of research and scouting would be needed. It's not going to be a one day drop into the hole thing unless you get extremely lucky... or unlucky.

Either way this site(s) aren't suitable for a novice explorer and what's left of it will pose multiple risks and need advanced skills including people skills to access existing openings.

Best to take 2Xplorations advice. Don't expect any easy answers, or solutions. As a newbie here asking Qs like this may not endear to the explorer community here. An abandoned school with an open door to the SSC is like a toddler wanting to climb Mt Everest. It will take knowledge, skill and balls to get inside that site...

Not so much the tunnels I was interested in. But the building complex. I've got it bookmarked in my google earth places.

Sorry if I offended. Won't happen again.

No offense taken. The buildings have their own set of issues such as patrols.
Never know, time brings change.
At least you won't be trapped underground.

High risk with zero reward. If it could have been done it would have. Go check out that school.

I think that you may be surprised by how many locations are in your area. Check out google earth, follow the railroad tracks and rivers. Also there are a ton of webpages for ghost towns and there are PLENTY in Texas. If you can make it further south towards Brownsville, there's at least a dozen cool locations there that are on my personal list. Do some research and it may make those drives a bit more productive.

I'm pretty sure almost every local Texan that is into this exploring stuff, and lots of non-locals as well, had/have the same question about the Superconductor. I know I did. It didn't take long to realize that not only was it not completed, not even by a third, but it is NOT an abandoned facility any longer. It is a very active chemical company (I think it starts with an "M") that currently utilizes what was once a partially realized Superconducting Supercollider.
It's my understanding that the cost was way underestimated, by billions of dollars. So, when congress began discussing budgets, it was either the conductor or the International Space Station. We all know which one they picked.
I'm pretty sure I asked this same question, but I'm not sure if it was on UER or a local group page. Either way, I was lucky enough to have someone answer my question that had actually explored the facility when it was possible to do so. I'll see if I can dig up those pics, but it's been a while now.

I strongly suspect that there is little or no trace of any Superconductor at that property. The tunnels have been flooded as well.

EDITED to say: Welcome to UER! I'm always stoked to have another fellow Texan on board! Cheers from DFW,
Dee

The building is now fully active. In addition to the ghosts of scientist's broken dreams and what-could-have-beens residing within these now unremarkable walls is a completely unrelated company called Magnablend. Although not always popular with the locals, this company looks like they are here to stay. At least for a while.
Here's its current status as of December 2016:

However... I had this same interest a while back and someone who was able to access and explore the SSC was kind enough to dig up his old photos and share them. They are the only ones I've seen (I haven't searched UER yet though) that are from when the property was truly vacant and still had many clues as to its almost claim to fame and its almost making history.

I'll see if I can dig them up and ask him if I can share them with y'all.

Nice! I really wish I'd been able to see this when it was still feasible and interesting.

I know I'm taking a risk by spurring on this topic, but this link was found on another (locked) thread, and it was too interesting to not share (hint: the really interesting stuff is in the comments section). Simply put, there's a lot of info there about the SSC I never knew about. For those primarily interested in politics and conspiracy theories, there's plenty of that too...
