Black Cat Baptist Chapel

Wales is home to a great many abandoned chapels and this was one I had intended to explore last November but my unfortunate ankle injury had put paid to any thoughts of exploring that day. As a last minute decision me and my friend decided a trip to Wales was in order and we soon found ourselves here.

I called it Black Cat because as soon as we entered we saw a black cat sneaking around where the organ pipes used to be, but it's name should really be 'pigeon poop hellhole chapel' as, despite it's beauty, almost everything is absolutely covered in pigeon crap. It stinks appallingly badly and I think I shortened my lifespan by ten years being in here for only a short time.

Those pipes literally made me want to cry. Something about those organs enthralls me and to see them like that...hurts.

They were all up attached to the organ until fairly recently, the floor underneath where they've been chucked has collapsed as well. They were all hand painted in bright colours and patterns too I seem to remember.

Looks like the ceiling above them is gone, so it would make sense the floor would go soon after. You have any photos of before they fell?

(can you imagine the noise they made when they fell? Gloriously painful to hear, I am sure)

Sadly not that does make sense though. Whether they fell or were pushed the result was the same.

Oh, you think they were pushed off? That's super shitty if that's the case.

Mookster, some of the editing you get on your shots amazes me. I wish you could tell me how you do it.

Still looks magnificent, even if it's seen better days.

It's simple really and very quick - I don't edit them at all ;)

It definitely has, sadly someone tried to burn it down by setting fire to one of the two staircases up to the balcony level at some point which is why the walls and ceiling are stained, but I think that adds to it's overall look amongst many similar style chapels that dot Wales.

Its cool this church looks similar to a post that appeared here a few weeks ago (It was in far better condition though). Is it common for churches in wales to look so similar?

Thank You for your explanation about the fire damage. I couldn't quite understand why this church was so dark and gloomy lol. Now, it makes sense. Its once colorful walls have been blackened with smoke, fire damage, and pigeon poo. Sad the organ was destroyed.

This is a very typical style for a Welsh Baptist chapel and similar examples can be found dotted all over the country in virtually every town and village, differing only by size, interior decor etc but all following the same layout. Many are still in use or have been converted into houses or other uses but a great many are disused. You're right in that the other one I explored before Christmas was in much better shape although I find all of them beautiful in their own ways.

Great photos. Love the chapels you've posted. I'm envious that I haven't found anything like in my explorations...yet!
