| | | I have about 5 pairs of windpants (for cross country skiing) that i'll wear over my normal clothes. If it's really cold, i'll wear longjohns and stuff. I'll wear my regular shoes, with a pair of battery operated socks, nice and toasty! During the summer i'll wear a pair of Lycra bicycle shorts, and a pair of regular shorts over those (gotta keep the bum comfy) oh, and i can't forget about my huge leather chopper mittens! (for winter, heh) http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=13306 I wrote about one such adventure in my Journal thingy.

| | | Posted by Shard ...why does the bike-association discourage wearing helmets? |
I'm curious as well. I know some believe that wearing a helmet sort of gives you permission to ride like an idiot, as in "Oh, I can ride down this steep, ice-covered mountain road without my brakes and not worry about serious injury because I'm wearing a helmet!" I don't buy it, but some do. There is also the belief that helmets discourage folks from riding a bike because nobody wants to wear a helmet (dorky-looking) and the fact that you "have to" wear a helmet makes cycling seem dangerous. I personally don't take a hard line on helmets--do what you want, I say. But three years ago I was hit by a car, thrown off my bike, and skid about 10 feet head first. Luckily I was not seriously injured, just some scrapes and bruises, and I believe my helmet played a large role in keeping me safe. So there! -N

| I agree. I've knocked myself out once while riding without a helmet. Big tree branch, head height, and me looking down. I awoke looking up at the world with starz floating by my head...heh. I don't always wear a helmet, but the majority of the time i do, especially if i'm riding in really busy, congested areas, or unknown territory.
