| | | 2016, one hell of a year. (lots of pics, some ue, some not!) < on 1/11/2017 8:40 AM > | Reply with Quote
| | | Twenty Sixteen, what a crazy year. I turned forty, son #2 came along, I got to explore some amazing spots and meet some great folks. Spent my fortieth birthday on a 6 day solo trip with the pooch to Lake Superior Provincial Park (a must do if you love camping and the incredible sheer beauty of the lake) So, first stop on the way was the Feb meet up here in Toronto. After some introductions, seeing some old faces and some good convos, we headed out to a local tv set studio that some had visited before and I was seeing for the first time. It was a pretty good spot, multiple sets, little nooks and crannies and the weather wasn't half bad. Tunnel vision by Zen, on Flickr At the beginning of May, the Milky Way is just starting to get nice and bright with the galactic core on a great angle with the horizon. I headed up after work one night, arriving around 2, I broke out a little herb and then started to shoot, catching one of my fave images of 2016. After about 30mins, and having a two hour drive home, I wrapped it up and came away with this! Milk Trees by Zen, on Flickr I headed south west and while the trip was mostly a scout, I enjoyed wandering around this place. The old architecture is incredible and the sections that are being overgrown and left to rot are quite something. Psych Out by Zen, on Flickr Near the end of May, I had to go to the hospital. I had been planning on going to this spot for awhile and the first visit was a bust. I made it in to a stairwell but all the doors were locked tight and the mag lock pin codes were no longer powered. Vowing revenge, I came back a week later and to my fortune, local kids had busted a window in and left multiple doors ajar. After mostly securing the loose doors I spent quite awhile here. It's a decent drive to get here and I was really hoping I wasn't going to get kept out. Sadly I was out of luck, but decided the lighting was nice for an exterior shoot and a return trip would be needed once again. Aircoil by Zen, on Flickr Totally Delusional by Zen, on Flickr What the F by Zen, on Flickr Swing away the time by Zen, on Flickr And we come to June. The 4th actually. And fuck. I'm now 40. I can no longer say, yes, I'm in my 30's However, as this is a nice round number year to be moving on to, I decided I wanted to do a big trip. I had been up this way years before and had always wanted to get back. Superior is incredibly beautiful. The drive from Toronto to the park itself takes roughly, 9-10 hours depending on your stops and overall speed. My oldest is fascinated with rocks and minerals and the second he found out I was heading up that way, he demanded I bring him home some Amethyst. This amethyst is found, oh roughly 30km east of Thunder Bay. So with the plan of working two days, using two vacation days and my four days off, I ended up with 6 days to enjoy the beauty of northern Ontario. I left work at midnight and loaded up the car and was on the road at 12:30. After not sticking to my plan, I drove the entire way, stopping for gas and groceries in Wawa and made it to the mines just after 6pm. After an incredible experience and getting some awesome pieces for my son and myself I turned the car back east and drove to Wawa. After just shy of 1900km, two Moose and fighting sleep I got back to Wawa and passed out in the car beside the giant Goose for a few hours nap before heading off to grab a sweet spot on the beach. The hikes are amazing, there are waterfalls, vistas, the rugged coastal trail, pictographs and just a dazzling assortment of wildlife and the visitor centre is top notch. Enough rambling, on to the shots from this one. The drive up. I got the best one of the lot and as the camp ground is more of a transient place for people driving the Trans Canada highway, it would a few people in the evening and they would leave the next morning. Only myself and one other person were there longer than 2 days. An old companies office building, it was two wings, complete with a bridge way between the other side which housed the medical unit, complete with a surgery suite. This was one great spot! Luckily it was just a coincidence and he need up driving away a couple mins later, allowing my escape into 2017.
