Triple Alpha Plant: A Superfund Site

Once was a massive ammunition manufacturing facility for the Army during WWII starting in 1941. Employed some 14,000 people at one time. Also secretly supplied deuterium-enriched heavy water for the Manhattan Project. Closed in 1945 and sat around until the 1970s. If only we could have explored it during that period. Unfortunately few period photos exist online and site was not photographed by HAERs. Due to contaminated soil and water, the site is now on a Superfund NPL site. Nearly everything has been demolished except for the power plant building, and some concrete structures in the jungle.

Hit this with Naaman a very long time ago.

We joked that it was the security vehicle.

Cool sites and shots

Mmmm, Superfund site. Unfortunately one of their first agendas is to level as many of the structures as possible.
Probably better that the HE buildings are gone; old picric acid is notoriously unstable. Even demo contractors have screwed up at sites like these. Exercise extreme caution at this site; there may still be buried tanks and pipes that were not properly purged or unknown of.

True, with a blast wave propagating @21000+ fps you'll never even see it.

In NY a contractor working on dismantling an ordinance manufacturing site decided to save the maple (?) hard wood slats that lined a tank. They hauled them off and stack them for future use. A few days later they spontaneously ignited.
They had been used to line tanks and for piping picric acid owing to the fact the wood is non-reactive to it.
However it does absorb it... They were lucky it burned rather than detonated.

Don't put to much faith in the remediation teams...

MMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Great job here mate, this is one of my favorite places.

There's loads of stuff in the forest around this area. There's a ton of stuff behind that big, smelly place you drive past on the way to this.

We checked out a nearby location that was part of the Rayon factory (?) We were only there for a few minutes before encountering security. It seemed to be a mix of semi-active and abandoned/partially-demod buildings.
