Wife and I drove up to College Station Saturday to watch the game and drove back Sunday morning. Along the way I had found that there was a school in a community that we just happened to get a hotel room in.

The school itself was an institution from the early 1900s, this "new" campus was opened in 1954. Similar to the previous school I visited this one also served as a segregated school for the black community. It remained operation until desegregation took place in the community in 1967-1968. It sat vacant until 1976 when a community group bought it and opened it up to various organizations. These included: Texas Welfare Department, Texas Dept. of Health, Women, Infants & Children program, Family Planning, DPS Driver’s License Office, Texas Employment Commission, and one wing occupied by St. John’s Day Care Center.

All was well until March 22, 1993, when an electrical short caused a fire that heavily damaged the buildings. Several rooms have collapsed, and fire, smoke and water damage is obvious all throughout. The fire was kept from spreading to the gym which was continued to be used for events for a short time.

The above information came from a news article from July this year discussing a group of organizations that are intending to refurbish the buildings to use them again. After my walk through, I wish them luck. There is no plumbing left, no electrical left. All it is now is a cinder block shell.

A google image showing the layout, you can see the damaged sections of roof. All buildings were open and accessible. Just not much to look at inside. Though I loved all the murals.
