A 17 y/o girl dies after falling 5-6 stories at the Ft Worth silos. I did a search and didn't see any posts of this, so I'll add it here in the South forum. Here's the news link.
So sad...

Some friends; sounds like they called the cops and booked. Really?

Silos can be extremely dangerous especially for the inexperienced. These aren't playgrounds.
Even workers die from falls in these occasionally.
Another completely needless death.

These were concrete silos. Here's another story version with more details:

I think most of us DFW folk are familiar with the silos here, and I'm sure that some people here have even been "on location" there (i've not made it there, but have stared longingly for years).

It seems that someone recently died while there. I hope that it was not a fellow group member (or friend of one). I also hope that we're reminded to watch our footing while out exploring, something i'm guilty of ignoring when caught up in the excitement of looking around.

THe full story can be found here:
http://www.fox4new...ws/206220061-story

(PS - are posting links cool? If not, let me know and i'll remove it. Not sure how the group feels about internet traffic "trackback", or if it's even a legit concern.)

Review the previous posts and links on the thread.
The link I posted to spite the same date is the most recent and complete.

As far as I can tell, she was just a 17 y/o girl hanging out with friends. I didn't see any indication that she was really into exploring for its own sake, but I could be wrong.
I also got the feeling that the phone call to the police were probably her "friends." I can't imagine leaving someone there like that, no matter how scared I was.

Surprisingly, I haven't been to these yet either. This is one of those locations I'm not too thrilled about going alone because of the people that like to hang out and shoot dope there. Most of the people I know have run into people squatting or doing drugs there, a couple have had to be a bit firm in their insistence that they be left alone. I don't think I know anyone that's gone there and saw no one. This isn't that big of a deal, but going solo with all my camera gear isn't something that sounds like fun to me at all. I'd be totally stressed out. This location and the incinerator are the two I haven't done yet. Odd as it sounds, these two closest to me are the last ones I usually think about.

The last part of this post is just some thoughts on the location, I don't want to make light of this girl's death by getting derailed, so I'll leave it at that.

Whatever reasons she was there, she did not have the wherewithal to safely explore it.
Worse she may have still been alive when her "friends" abandoned her.

Every foot fall and hand hold counts.
Never move without looking where you are going.

Abandoned power plants and silos are usually horribly unsafe. Concrete shells with formerly used utility shafts or missing patches in the floor or stairs.

Combine that with noobs who love to forget bringing along something better than a five-candlepower Maglite and death is just there in the forecast.

My 'urban exploring death' bookmarks are starting to show that ninety percent of these deaths are falling-related in some way.

Seeing noobies can't even navigate this slick easy as pie site, I can see why they fly through hellholes so easy

Lot of people have died in falls this year.
Almost everyone of them were easily preventable.

I don't know much about grain silos. I've only been around one and it was a very small one in Louisiana. I didn't know that they had "basements" that deep. Only one I was ever around had pits for loading/unloading that were only about 8 feet deep.

A little after the fact here, but are they reporting this correctly? Or, did this girl fall into one of the actual silos?

Raticus... you live

It's unclear from all the stories I look at from where or how high she fell. She died reportedly from blunt force trauma. A 10 foot fall can do that...
Her friends left her there and bugged out on her like little bitches, then called police telling them she was trapped on the roof of the structure.
Their first search yielded nothing. Perhaps she fell down another hole at the silo bottom, or on the outside of the silo wall into a sublevel or from ground level into a sublevel.

Maybe someone who is familiar with this site has a better guess as all of the published stories are incomplete and vague. I'm curious myself as to the missing pieces of this tragedy.

I don't know the details on this fatality but I do know grain elevators come in different designs. There is a basement of sorts in some for the grain transporting machinery, conveyors or augers and such. One grain elevator I found had the silos underground.

This has piqued my interest. If for nothing else from a technical side.

How deep?
In Texas?

So many design issues running through my head.

cant say how deep but I doubt theyre very deep due to the fact what went in had to come out the top somewhere, a conveyor went from the mill to these silos theyre on a different piece of land behind a different fence now this pic was shot hanging over the fence, I suspect milled product not the whole grain was stored here but I don't really know that for sure

also here is a photo of a basement in a grain mill / elevator shot from ground level there were augers, bushings, chutes and conveyors built into the original stone structure

One of the articles specified that she fell either 5 or six stories. I seriously doubt I can find any photos I've taken of that place, but I can probably find one from a friend and post it here for reference. I've driven by it and it's always been one of those, "oh, yeah. I need to check that out," kind of places. One reason I've never done it is because it's not the kind of explore you want to do alone. There are a lot of junkies that have set up camp on the lower floors. I've heard all kinds of stories about the people one might run into there, most of them are mildly amusing, a couple of them slightly disturbing.

The silos aren't as large as the massive abandoned ones a few blocks away (I've been in those and it's like whoever abandoned it wants to kill you in that damned thing. Talk about hell holes, yikes!). You can see the silos where this girl died from the top of the huge one.

I'll see if I can find some reference for y'all. Stay tuned.
