| | | I had a semi off-road bike in South Africa, and I would ride it in search of places to go off road. I found a place in Centurion, Pretoria. There was a small rock building that looked like it was a farm building from a hundred years ago. Further in I found the foundation and front steps of a house, and a swimming pool next to it. This find is what turned a small spark of interest from living in London into a raging fire. After a few hours of walking around on the large city property, as it was getting dark, I decided to go home. The border of the property and neighbouring golf course is the Hennops river, which floods regularly. I rode my bike over fallen reeds and got stuck. Next thing I'm surrounded by Zimbabweans, illegal immigrants who are squatting in the rock building, and I didn't know about them. These are the people the city authorities were trying to get rid of. They were squatting there because circumstances are not in their favour. They picked up the bike for me, and invited me to go eat with them. I am white so why are they inviting me? It turns out they are just really friendly people. I am glad to say that I have changed a lot since 2008. Now I every year I send my brother to give them clothes and groceries.

| | | I was exploring some construction sites (money ran out for the owners and so they were left to rot) in Royal Park, Azerbaijan, with a buddy of mine. He was trying to introduce me to Urbex and thought that, with the beautiful view of Baku and the surrounding area plus only mild security presence, this would be a good first spot. About an hour after jumping into the first building, we end up at a pool room. At this point the pool basin itself had a hole in it that led to the pump house, small but we could fit. While we were in the basin snapping photos we hear two or three sets of footprints jogging down the hallway to where we are, and we look at each other and I slide into the hole first, him following suite. The only problem we hadn't thought about yet was, the hole was pitch black and neither of us had thought about light, it being sunny outside and this being my first and one of his first goes at exploring. Instead of fumbling around in the dark and making all sorts of noise, we decide to wait it out in what felt like a corner. Never been more scared in my life than the thought of middle eastern prison.

| | | I have sure enjoyed reading this thread......I have only been exploring for a couple of years and always fantasized about the opportunities large cities provide for explorations....but Damn you guys are creative..... I have 2 oh "shit moments" ...one was when I got caught and that was more like "oh Damn" The other was walking thru an old mental hospital that I had been dreaming about getting into for years.....I finally got the chance...was alone...before sunrise.....all of a sudden ..Im inside and I just could not believe what I had just done.....lets just say I am an older lady, with no experience ...... Im so fascinated.....walking along...and I get to a doorway and see this... so after I caught my breath, I realized the situation I put myself in was not ideal......Imagine falling, breaking both legs,.....and your cell phone flies out of your pocket and busts....and you lay there looking at some porno graffiti....while you bleed out... 1.

| | | I'm facing away from my friend while setting up my tripod. I hear dogs and assume they are behind a fence on the neighboring property because my friend has said nothing. I turn around and there are five very large dogs surrounding her and she is standing, frozen. I have no clue how to handle this one, so I slowly extended my tripod and walked in her direction. I didn't look at the dogs directly, but held that damn tripod like a baseball bat while she and I backed away. Only one of the five dogs directed their attention at me the entire time. They barked, growled, and snarled, but did not attack. As soon as we crossed what seemed to be an imaginary boundary, all five dogs completely lost interest - unless we stopped walking away, then one or two of them would begin a low warning growl and their attention would refocus on us. Needless to say, we did not go back. This was my first issue with dogs, but I've always known that they can be a real threat. Fortunately, we both made it out alive and unscathed. Just rattled.

| I have started carrying dog treats and extra dog food with me, because this has happened to me on numerous occasions. Many times, the poor dogs are hungry, so feeding them helps.
