Excuse for getting caught picking

Hello all, this is my first post so bear with me if i do not follow proper procedure.

I am thinking about entering an abandoned building near me, but it is in rather plain view from the road. I need to pick it, and I want to know how or if I could play off standing in front of a building facing the door. The likelihood of getting caught is relatively low, but I don't want to take a huge risk.

Thanks a lot guys,

Ryan

Maybe wear a reflective vest or something if it's appropriate for the building type, that way you being there will look less suspicious. Or practice picking to get your speed up (idk how fast is possible tho, I'm not experienced in that area).

@highwayman Yeah, I plan on practicing some more. It's kind of hard to be fast on a lock you don't know though.

This is kinda like when you watch COPS and they pull someone over and start to search them and find a pipe in their pocket then they go "Officer that's not MY crack pipe. I don't know where that came from."

Seriously, having lock picks on you when exploring (or in a lot of situations, really) is kind of a bad idea in my opinion. It ups the ante to having burglary tools on your person, and there's really nothing you can say that will make things look good for you if you have to explain yourself to the cops.

I dunno - personally I don't feel it's worth it to carry anything that could be perceived as a breaking & entering tool, but ultimately it's your call.

Well, if you are going to pick the locks, do it at a time when no one is going to be around, like the middle of the night.

Then just hide the picks somewhere when you're exploring, or come back the next morning.

Bricks are much more disposable than lock picks.

As you have probably noticed, doing that would generally be frowned upon and discouraged. And even if someone has some tips they probably won't share them within the community here. We already walk a grey ethical line with our hobby and if you have to pick a lock to get it, it is pushing it to the dark side.

It's kinda a taboo topic on here but if I were gonna do it myself, I'd do it quick, leave and come back later. You don't wanna be caught with those things on you cause it turns a trespassing into B&E instantly (in Canada break and enter + possession of burglary tools)

Bottom line, it probably isn't worth doing anyway. If a place is so sealed up that you've gotta lockpick your way in, theres probably gonna be worse security measures inside the place.

Nothing like Ohio's draconian laws to brighten your day...
What a criminal lawyer will tell you:

Criminal Tools

Every day in Ohio, there are many individuals who are charged with possession of criminal tools. Possession of criminal tools is a serious criminal offense in Ohio that is not treated lightly in a court of law. Penalties for a possession of criminal tools conviction can range from a first degree misdemeanor to a fifth degree felony, in addition to a variety of other consequences that will negatively impact your life.

Possession of criminal tools is defined according to the Ohio Revised Code (ORC 2923.24) as anyone who possesses or has under their control any substance, device, instrument or article with the purpose or intention of using it in a criminal act.

Possession of Criminal Tools Penalties

If you are convicted for possession of criminal tools, you will most likely be charged with a first degree misdemeanor. This entails up to six months in jail and up to $1,000 in fines.

If you are convicted for possession of criminal tools and the circumstances indicate that the substance, device, instrument or article involved was intended to be part of a felony, then you will be charged with a fifth degree felony. This entails at least six months and up to one year in jail in addition to fines up to $2,500.

The legal mumbo-jumbo:

2006 Ohio Revised Code - 2923.24. Possessing criminal tools.
§ 2923.24. Possessing criminal tools.

(A)  No person shall possess or have under the person's control any substance, device, instrument, or article, with purpose to use it criminally.

(B )  Each of the following constitutes prima-facie evidence of criminal purpose:

(1) Possession or control of any dangerous ordnance, or the materials or parts for making dangerous ordnance, in the absence of circumstances indicating the dangerous ordnance, materials, or parts are intended for legitimate use;

(2) Possession or control of any substance, device, instrument, or article designed or specially adapted for criminal use;

(3) Possession or control of any substance, device, instrument, or article commonly used for criminal purposes, under circumstances indicating the item is intended for criminal use.

(C)  Whoever violates this section is guilty of possessing criminal tools. Except as otherwise provided in this division, possessing criminal tools is a misdemeanor of the first degree. If the circumstances indicate that the substance, device, instrument, or article involved in the offense was intended for use in the commission of a felony, possessing criminal tools is a felony of the fifth degree.

Trespassing in Ohio isn't a crime in it's self necessarily unless another crime(s) has also been committed... like having a set of lock picks. Can you say enhanced charges? Even if you avoid a conviction and jail it's going to set you back a couple grand easy if charged. Exploring the Ohio legal system as a felony charged defendant isn't the fun kind of exploring... Limiting your legal exposure while exploring can save you a lot of grief

Thank all of you for your insight. I didn't really mean from cops, because it's pretty obvious that would be the end. I think you're right about picking, it's not worth the risk. This is just one potential location, there are plenty of other drains that I could explore or some other abandoned buildings. It's not even that great, certainly not worth jail time. It would be nice if urban exploration was just like, legal, haha.

I will probably not be exploring this building, and I will reconsider using lockpicks at all.

Thank you all!
