Driving home I passed through Athens, TX. I stopped in the town square, pulled out my map and sure enough, there were 2 locations in town!. The first one I went to was the Texan Theater. Unfortunately, all that remains now of the place is the marquee and a bunch of burned up timbers between the two adjoining buildings.

Next it was off to the county hospital:

When I arrived there was a fence around the whole place and tons of trucks parked everywhere. I went around the fence and was getting some exterior shots when a guy pulled up and asked what I was doing. I told him taking pictures of the place. He said that I wasnt supposed to be inside the fence. We chatted some more and after about 15 minutes he offered to give me a tour!

6. East Wing Hallway 1

7. The place has been used as a "haunted house" over the years.

8. East Wing Hallway 2

11. West Wing Hallway. Upstairs was too unstable to go walk on but I was told it was more of the same. Everything of interest/value has been stripped out.

14. Whats left of the back of the building. The entire place will look like this in less than a week.

I wish I could have seen it before it got to this state but I feel fortunate to at least be one of the last people to photograph the place. I would love to see pics of it back in the good ole' days if anyone has anything.

Hey there...I'm a new guy here, but have been watching all of the posts on here and figured it was finally time to chime in. I'm in North Texas, but knew about this spot and was soooo close to getting in there before demolition.

I had actually been emailing the city of Athens since last summer about it. I saw that it was getting demolished and I really wanted the chance to explore it. Since it's a bit of a drive, i figured i'd ask permission before heading out to a spot that could have already been gone when i got there or too heavily secured to get into. The city was still fighting a legal battle over the property, but the person I was emailing said they'd keep me in the loop. Cut to Autumn and the guy who i was sure would let me have free reign tells me he's retiring and that a new guy was going to be in charge of the demo. New guy never once responded to any contact i tried to make. I chalk this one up to a missed opportunity.

I'm glad you were able to talk your way in before it came tumbling down and get some nice pics in the process.

I'll have to chalk this one up as a missed opportunity too. I live only 30 miles from it and have never been in it. Been up to it, but never in it. It was always one of those places that, since I lived to close, I always reasoned that I'd catch it next time.

Guess my "next time" just went into the back of that truck. Thanks for giving us all a last look at the place.

footnote: UE visionary and explorer extraordinaire "coffinnail" suggested the city make it a skate park 3 years before I found it and discovered it was being used as a, skate park.

Damn, that was gutted to the max even for a demo. Sucks after going to all that trouble.

According to the foreman who was doing the demo, it'll be a completely vacant lot in two weeks or less.

Also, he told me that there was a school demo slated in Hearne, TX for Feb. 21st. Most of the stuff inside has been auctioned off and the place is wide open. I haven't seen anything on the web about it so I'm not sure if it's true. Mrs. Ulcer and I had plans to drive up tomorrow and check it out but not sure now as life stuff has arisen.

Anyone who wants to head that way I can give you an idea of where it is.

This place was full of stuff a few months back. I'm glad it's going down, it reeked of mold. Like, was horribly hard to breathe down one hallway.

So, first...I must laugh...then, I must own up to my mistake. Hahaha. I posted photos from the hospital that I ALWAYS confuse with the Athens hospital. So, I apologize...regardless, comment still stands.

Here's my photos from inside this one, if you wanted to see what it was like a bit ago: https://www.flickr.../72157656031190230

Damn. I actually drove by this place but didn't have time to stop. Of course, now, I regret it!

Also, it is true about the Hearne school as well. The building is scheduled to be demolished this week, starting TOMORROW. Another one bites the dust...

EDIT: Does anyone know if they've already demolished the one in Athens yet?

I know which one this is but haven't been there yet. Do you think it's worth the 2-3 hour drive from Dallas? The demolition of the Athens one has me a bit more inspired! :/
