While looking for an old fort outside Voca, TX I ran across an old abandoned motel. It appears to be typical of the ones built back in the 1930's. Most had fairly small rooms and catered to the truckers and occasional families that would travel the then horrible roads across Texas. Like many in its day, it had a nice parking area, a common area outside that I'm sure was well kept and allowed for people to gather in the evenings.

Like all of the places posted here, neglect and time have ravaged this place and it is now literally a shell of its former self.

Used to hunt near Voca (now a reformed hunter) but never found this little gem. I do have an interesting wild hog and UFO story(s) from Voca I'll share someday. I want to believe you see.

They called them "Motor Courts". Sure are a lot of them in Texas and some still in decent shape.

Good job. I don't know that I've ever been in Voca but it's off the beaten path to Brady.

"now a reformed hunter" Does that mean you hunt with a smaller caliber rifle or you switched to a bow?

He gets his meat at the supermarket where no animals were harmed in its harvesting.

Nice pictures! I love the old 30s & 40s automobile-centric stuff. Places like this were a life saver when traveling long distances back then. I like how you mentioned the outdoor courtyard area - a relic from a past time where we valued meeting new people and building a sense of community.

Damn, I saw this thread and thought Peptic finally showed up!

I’m seriously thinking about driving down there and knocking on their door... I’ll make him regret ever sharing with me where he resides, lol, but maybe he’ll think twice about disappearing on us again!

Fair enough question. I was an archer and bow hunted for years, the only two times I hit a deer they ran off and could not be found, I never bow hunted again.

Smaller caliber? Ive killed larger animals than a deer with a .22RF, it don't get much smaller than that.

No I just gave up sport hunting, I mean I have rifles that can hit stuff out to 1000yds without much trouble, sitting in a box waiting for an animal to come to some feeder full of corn that's been put out? That's not even hunting in my mind.

I just chose not to sport hunt, I have no problem with others that do its just not my idea of fun anymore.

Signed,

Reformed

Great set! I've been away for quite sometime, but never really contributed. Surprised I remembered my login! Anyways, there are a ton of these little treasures in West/Central Texas. I spend a lot of time in Coleman County and recently a young couple bought an old motor court and rehabbed it... it only has four rooms, but looks really good.

Without the mingling of the blood thing
Good for you 2Xplorations, but killing deer and wild hogs is a community service.

Well Mr Pepto Ulcer hasn't logged in since last year.

Well if I needed some meat for the freezer Id hunt down Bambi himself. Got no real feelings one way or the other about hogs, any hog over 100lbs aint worth eatin, depending on what they been eating. tried some once, couldn't even stay in the house while it was cooking, pretty rank.

Deer in Texas (white tail / mulies) actually belong to the State, By the time you buy a license, adorn yourself with the latest designer camo, ride out to your camo box on a camo 4 wheeler that gamey State venison ends up costing about $290 per pound. This doesn't include any money you spent on a hunting lease where the sky is the limit these days.

I have some pretty nice deer come right up to my house, I could take one with my 45 carry gun if indeed I wanted to, but I don't want to so I just watch them. I used to feed them but the corn was attracting large mice and rats and about a thousand coons so, they get to find their own forage. Enjoy a few trail cam pics.

Guess Peptic is a law abiding family man now...

Never smelled a big hog cooking... think I'll pass on that since you put it that way.

Deer hunting is a joke in Texas.
In PA it's illegal to "hunt" by the corn feeder.
Of coarse the deer are like rats there in many areas and it's not all fenced in.
Not everything is bigger in Texas.

Yeah a bad shoot with a bow is just plain sad to do; can't blame you from not wanting a repeat.

both examples were hit right through both lungs with state of the art razor heads and were complete pass throughs

one I spent over two hours tracking before I determined it made it onto a neighboring ranch a couple mile from where it was hit

the other left a couple drops of blood and a couple partial hoof prints on top of a rocky hillside and no other trace so an alien abduction maybe

arrows don't kill immediately they rely on hemorrhaging and that can vary greatly unless you hit one in the heart or aorta they can run for miles before bleeding out its just not worth it to me
