There are quite a few members on this forum and in other places who are super lazy with protecting stuff, or...they just don't give a crap. I go through their Flickr accounts and in 5-15 minutes, I have an address for the place based on pictures they have taken or names they have used. You don't NEED a database.

I have personally over the last few years built up my own reference maps for the UK, mainland Europe and more recently the USA - they will never be shared with anyone, and that's not me being selfish and not trusting everyone it's purely because I want to protect all the work I have done. Even my closest exploring friends I have known for years will never get their hands on them. I actively enjoy researching and finding locations to explore, especially American ones, and planning trips based off what I can discover.

I personally think the whole concept of sharing maps online is dodgy.

All it takes is one person to 'accidentally' let someone else know who isn't on here or privy to the information normally and it's out there. A few years back some of my exploring contacts (and even myself for a little bit) were all contributing towards a supposedly private map of locations in France, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. The map grew in size and content until suddenly it was leaked by 'someone', was plastered all over various websites and Facebook and had something like 50,000 views before it got taken down. Shared maps, even those which are supposed to be the most private, will always get out somehow. Because who's to know what 'x' full member is going to do with the info behind closed doors? Who is he/she going to take to these places? Are they going to be as trustworthy as those on here? You simply can't police a shared map.

Ding ding ding! I cannot stress this enough. I would only share my map with people that I have met in person. And even that is not a guarantee I would share it with anyone. Honestly, I would only share a map with a handful of people right now. You just have to be wary. You cannot control what other people are going to do with it. If somebody asks about a location, I'm willing to help out. But I'm not going to share a database I have spent a long time compiling so that it can be spread like wildfire.

Most I kept full member only until recently so the argument non-member taggers and copper thieves can find those through the DB doesn't hold up. The same people that have decried the DB are often the same ones that post all their photos on public flickr pages and some even use the real name! This is far more likely to result in a location being compromised than a full member DB location with a fake or scrambled name. Google does not see those but it does see these photo hosting pages and other social media accounts.

Bottom line if want to keep someplace secret don't post it on the Internet, which includes most of these amateur photographer pages. I like the idea of sharing a database though. We actually had one in DFW for years but it lived on one guy's laptop computer there was no Cloud then. I assume you can create a Google account for just this purpose and share access to your Cloud with trusted friends.

Huge contingent of Texas explorers straight up naming locations in their Flickr albums and posting names and locations in Facebook groups. So frustrating. When you share a name and exact location in a group of a couple hundred, bad stuff will follow.

Frustrating is not my word of choice for these folks, friend. But, it's far more polite.

Well since I started this thread I guess I its time to throw in my two cents worth. As I understand it, this site was created so that people could come together, share ideas, advice and yes locations. I also understand that this site has been used by people who's intentions are not in confluence with the vast majority of users.

With that being said, I started this "project" with the intent of people being able to come together and begin sharing locations again. Granted it's not secure (once a map is out, I have no control over what is done with it) however my intent is to only share these locations with active full members who contribute regularly and have demonstrated the ethos most of us live by.

People are free to contribute or not, its entirely up to the individual. So far almost all of the locations I have received were already known or were easily found on the web so it isnt like we have the secret entrance to the SSC here.

I appreciate everyone's feedback, concern and cooperation. I would only ask that if you do wish to contribute that you please do respect the norms of UER and share the information only with people who will respect, and seek to preserve these sites.

If I don't know you personally and trust you or somebody I'm close with can't vouch for you, you aren't getting anything good. It would mostly be stuff that is already well known in the area. I've seen too many places destroyed over the last 10 years.

If you ever happen to come to Korea, I keep the LDB very well updated. Of course I don't have to worry about the wrong members finding it because nobody ever comes here. After ten years it's become a pretty useful research tool with a ton of useful data. When I want to know when something was demolished, or what neighbourhoods have changed, all it takes is a quick look at the LDB.

Posted by skatchkins
Yeah the DB experience for me
Oh finally found something that looks cool.... annnnnd it's been demolished for 10yrs.

That shit needs to be cleaned out.

Yeah, I was just going through locations that need to be re-approved, and there are a ton that haven't been updated in 10 years and just had their statuses changed to demolished. It would be nice if a full audit of all the old sites could be done, but that would take a lot of members.

That's what I've suspected for a while, yeah. People upload locations to the LDB and to Facebook, and then the wrong person finds out. So everyone blames the LDB.

The vast majority of locations I know about, well I'd share those with the vast majority of explorers that I either know personally or know through someone I trust. But no, not gonna share a map with all. Come to NC sometime though, Peptic, we'll show you around.

And FWIW, I don't add to the LDB but I try to keep whatever's already in it and in my area up to date.

But this is exactly the problem. Here's a little song to explain.

I know Local Joe
Local Joe asked me for the info
But I said "no"
Because Local Joe is the guy literally stealing copper and LITERALLY tagging his fucking name and the date all over local utility infrastructure...o
And now we can't access that manhole no mo'

But you don't know Local Joe
So when Local Joe stopped by to trade the info
You said, "Straight up, bro,
Here you go!"
And now Joe has a ton more info
That he can use to fuck up even more shit... yo.

[There's a whole dance routine that goes along with that. Oh yes, there is.]

A globalized map that anyone can access is a bad idea. There will be no controlling it. It will get out. It will create havoc.

And worst of all, it was utterly unnecessary in the first place, because UER is already the PERFECT resource to manage that.

UER isn't a location database, it isn't a treasure map, it isn't the keys to every city on earth.

UER is social media and networking.

If you're not yet part of a local network and you want to be, you use it to discretely raise a few flags and get noticed by your local community. You find a few people, get to hang out and explore with them and, provided you're not a fuck-tard like our friend Local Joe, now you're part of the local scene. This is literally how I became a part of the MSP exploring community after years of exploring without running into anyone, and as such I have done my best to go out of my way to respond when I see a local flag raise, a tentative hand seeking a community of like-minded friends.

When you're part of a local community, you find like-minded members and friends who you can exchange information with - in a controlled manner that isn't spewing information to anyone who can hammer on a keyboard.

The best thing about UER, though, is you can create a world-wide network of friends and explorers. I don't need to have a map of every abandoned shit-hole in the country because if I'm planning a trip out of state I can hit up the locals and say "Hey, guys, I'm gonna be in town for a couple days. I'd like to get out, is anyone free?" People do it all the time, it's great. It's perfect, actually.

If I already have friends there, they'll hook me up with something AND they'll let me know any pertinent information about recent activity/security/patrols/local issues that you just cannot provide via global map. No global map needed. If I don't have friends there, the mutual friends I have will vouch for me and, again, someone will hook me up and let me know that the cops have been busting people at Theater X, lately, but Brewery Z has recently been re-opened and has some cool stuff to see. No global maps escaped or were harmed to let me have a couple great nights seeing new things. The locals will be able to give me information to tailor my trip, too. If they know I'm bringing my fancy camera and want to spend some time getting re-acquainted with my tripod doing fancy arty-farty shots, they'll say "Here's some good places for that." If they know I just want to spend a couple hours drunk in a cave hanging out and talking, they'll tell me the good caves for that and let the locals know that we're having a gathering.

And if I can't be trusted, people will know that too, and they'll keep me from getting access to information and locations that should not be loosed into the wild. They'll feed me to the derps that are easy that no one cares about and I'll STILL have a good time without jeopardizing anything.

Local Joe can still tag up the telecommunications tunnels under the city and he can still smash all the windows on that great complex that's sat quietly just outside of town or years, he can even instagram the ever-loving shit out of that sweet, old church, but there's no good reason to make it easy for him to do that.

Like, there's LITERALLY no reason to tell the entire internet where everything is when we have this great resource for urban exploration right here.

People need to get past the database. Whatever the initial intention was, that's just not the best use of this site, and others like it.

It's about connecting with the locals, and that's why I keep coming back.

It depends on what you want. If you don't post a thread, you don't get feedback. If you post in the DB galleries, folks researching the location see them...but no one else.
