Hey all,

Currently I have a rebel T5i, and I have a cousin who wants to buy my T5i body. I already have quite a few lenses for it, and I really like it.

If I were to sell my T5i body and buy a newer body, would I be better off going with a 70D, or a Rebel T6i/T6s? There really isn't too much different between the 70D and T6i/s, but I don't know enough about the technical specs to make a good decision.

Perhaps this may help.

I explore mostly Sandstone mines (very dusty) and Storm Drains (wet and moist). I have already killed a cheap point and shoot due to dust . I am looking for a rugged water/dust proof camera that can do long exposure low light pictures (minimum 30 secs; longer or bulb mode would be awesome). I have a budget of $200-$400. I don't want a gopro; I'm not interested in taking videos. I am pretty inexperienced with manual settings, but would like to learn more. I'm open to the idea of a case. Any suggestions?

For the past few years I've been shooting with a Canon sx5000, and while it is fairly basic, it has held up very well over the past year during explores. I am currently looking to upgrade to a DSLR, and hoping to find something reliable that I can grow into. So far, the Nikon d3300 looks pretty good and is within my $300-700 price range, but I was wondering if anyone could could personally recommend a similar alternative, such as the Rebel t5. I'm also curious about lenses, and whether going with Canon or Nikon would lead to different/better options.

So now that my school re-built the darkroom I was thinking of getting into film photography. I wanted to ask any veterans of the film era what their favorite camera was.

I personally prefer to shoot Medium Format, but I guess the camera really depends on a number of factors.

The type of photography you shoot can influence the camera you will use. There are some bigger, bulkier set ups like the RZ67 in Medium format, or some Large Format cameras that are best used on tripods. I love these cameras for exploring. Then you can have your 35mm ( I use a Canon nF1) that can be used on a tripod, but work well with faster ISO film when you are on the run, or are shooting street photography. On the other hand I also use a Rolleiflex (Medium format) for both types of photography.

The darkroom setup of your school can have an influence as well. I assume it will allow you to develop 35mm film, but how about 120, 4x5 and beyond? I'm guessing the enlargers will have the same size carriers as whatever developing system you will use.

These are some of the basic factors.

My personal favorite cameras to use are:

Mamiya RZ67 pro ii
Rolleiflex 2.8
Horseman 45HF
Canon nF1

Not a problem. I am not veteran at all. There are so many film cameras out there. It becomes an addiction, you start picking up bodies and lenses for a fraction of the cost (usually) compared to these newer digital system. The result is many times a higher resolution that what you can attain from the digital image. Of course you loose some of that in the scanning process (depending on equipment and method). However, I have felt film photography and cinematography has made me much more conscious, and deliberate in each shot that I take.

IMHO, the best camera is the one you can get your hands on.

Sometimes, you find a dinged-up old beater at Goodwill and it could turn out to be your best friend.

I found a Super 8 camera there once for $5 and it became more useful than the $10k camera I rented.

Also, it's great to get a feel for different lenses before you purchase anything. Check out your local rental houses and experiment with different prime lenses (I like them best for INT exploration since they're better in low light):

^ All still rent out SLR lenses, I believe.

You can also check out https://www.lenslenders.ca/ if going to a brick-and-mortar store isn't your thing.

Hope that helps!

I use a Pentax k-30.

It's weather resistant, sealed against dust, spores, and water.

Not a bad DSLR either, but I am more comfortable with something that can survive the elements.

A little to the party here, but when I was a news reporter/photog I used a Canon AE-1. I liked it so much back in the day (late '80s) that I bought another a year ago. It's pretty entry-level for a 35mm SLR, but it has nice features and can be found cheap. I also started shooting with my father-in-law's old Kodak bellows camera that uses 620 film (which is 120 on a different spool). Haven't finished a full roll yet.

If you're shooting film, you might want to get the BeeCam light meter app for your phone. It's not as good as a real meter, but it works pretty well. I shoot video for work and we use it all the time. It's free.

So I've been playing around with my D3300 for a few months now and starting to get the hang of it. I would like to get a good, but affordable wide angle lens for it. does anyone have any recommendations?

I'm trying to choose between the Nikon d750 and the d810. I've been using a friend's d7000 for my expeditions if they aren't using it. It is pretty good but I'm looking to get into the full-frame world so I don't end up spending on lenses that I'll end up selling off when I do upgrade. I mostly use a tripod, unless I'm going in a drain. I've heard the d750 is really great for dark areas but the d810 has that delicious resolution for my above-ground shots. I'm leaning towards just getting the d750 and buying some better wide angle glass. Which do you guys think is the better choice for me?

It depends on how badly you need and want the extra resolution that you'd get with a D810. It's an outstanding machine. The only drawback is that it shoots at a maximum of 5fps. You'll still be getting a body that's capable of shooting over 24MP, so my recommendation is to go with the D750. Which lenses do you plan to get?

I personally used an old Pentax K1000. I thought it did very well. Amazing clarity and quality. I actually shot my brothers wedding with it.

So far all I've looked at is nikon's 18-35mm and a few sigmas. Do you have any suggestions?

Edit: Just a note, not particularly able to spend on some of that fancy $2000 glass. Looking at no more than $800-900 at the moment.

My suggestions are a Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8, of which you can get a good quality used one for between $350-$400, and a Nikon 20mm f/2.8 AF or AF-D. The combination is at around the lower end of your price range, maybe less.
