Hey everyone, first post here, and relatively new to exploration.

I was wondering if you guys have some good stories about run-ins with police or security that did NOT end well. Reading around here, I have seen a few stories of police being very nice and understanding, and even letting people off. I know this isn't what happens always. Hit me up with stories about police/security encounters that ended poorly!

So apparently no-one else has had an experience he'd classify as "not ending well" either. I was going to hold off on this story, because it ended about as well as it could have, to make way for some criminal charges and court battles, but apparently I don't need to!

This happened the 4th or 5th time I'd ever been exploring, so I was pretty new and naive.

A friend and I climbed the fire escape to the roof of one of the buildings at our school (it was a relatively steep sloped roof), and were just chilling up there when we saw a flashlight training up and down the side of the adjacent building. We figured we'd wait it out up there, but 20 minutes later a policeman popped his head over the top of the roof, and asked us to come down.

As I was descending the ladder to the top of the escape, I heard one of the officers radio "we have two in custody, call off canine". They led us into the building, handcuffed us, and then down to the basement for questioning.

It was at this stage that I realised just how damn many of them there were - at least three campus security officers, and four police officers - and so they lined up facing us, and began the questions. The usual - "why were you up there?", "how did you get up there?", "did you enter the building?", "did you damage anything?", etc.

Bear in mind that I was a rather innocent (at the time) freshman, who had never been in any sort of trouble before - so I'll always remember one of the police officers asking us "are you students here?", to which I timidly replied "yes", only to be given a sharp retort of "you WERE students here" and berated for 5 minutes about how we'd get a criminal charge with significant jail time, never be able to enroll in another university again, never be able to enter the United States, etc, etc. I also had a fairly bad eye infection at the time, so of course "what were you smoking up there" was one theme they kept returning to. I was also very allergic to something down in that basement... and lemme tell you folks, having your nose run like a faucet while in handcuffs is NOT fun.

It took about an hour before they were finally convinced that we were just exploring and nothing else, and so the police let us off with a trespassing ticket, and security charged us under our school's code of conduct. The school investigator decided that the provincial offenses ticket punished me enough, so let me off the hook for the code of conduct charge... and the provincial judiciary did the same, so I was let off for both charges because each thought the other punished me enough! This is why I say that it ended about as well as it could have for me.

My friend was not so lucky - he had priors, so got convicted of both. Ugh. It turned out that we'd set off an alarm in one of the doors on the way up the fire escape - security called police, who called canine because they got this burglar alarm and thought someone was in the building, but could not find us (since we were on the roof!)

After that experience, no sort of intimidation from security really gets to me anymore.

I was once detained by police for a couple hours after midnight on suspicion of terrorism. They found out where I worked and wanted to visit my office at night. I worked for the government, so I told them no way. Eventually they let me go, after giving me a nickname.

아저씨, which roughly means "old man." The cop who made it up couldn't have been more than a couple years younger than me.

A previous non-UE-related arrest back in Canada, I was nicknamed "The Professor" which sounds more like an appropriate criminal nickname.

Can't we all just agree that any run-in with law enforcement possessing search dogs is the "worst" and simply call it a day?

A friend and I were exploring a factory in the middle of a neighborhood. No one saw us approach or enter the building. We waltzed right through the front door. Spent a few hours inside, took some cool pictures, decided to leave.

Well, we were leaving out the front door, which had a wind barrier shielding us from view from the street. I peeked around the corner and saw a cop car driving by, as well as 2 women parking their SUV's on the street. The cop didn't see us, but as my friend was shutting the door, it slammed shut from the wind.

Shit.

The ladies across the street heard us and one pulled out her phone. It looked like she made a call, while they were staring right at us. My friend and I started fast walking down to the sidewalk as they shouted at us "Hey get over here! I need to talk to you!". It looked like one was recording it on her cellphone camera.

Fuck.

So we make a run for it, while they're still shouting at us "Get back here!" Due to the chain link fences and small yards, we couldn't just cut through. We were stuck on the road. So, they both get into their SUV's and start to follow us. We decide to split up and make a run for it. Well, they also split up and both are following us.

The lady following me was on her phone, probably calling the cops. As I ran, I saw two police cars with their lights off driving towards me. I ran through some brush and made my way along a drainage creek to where my car was. I waited in the bushes until I was certain I had lost them, then I got in my car. I texted my friend to give me his location on Google maps once he lost the cops.

I started my car and drove down the intersection near the factory. I saw 4 cop cars lined up on the road next to the factory, cops walking around and entering the factory. I parked at a nearby McDonalds until my friend texted me. I went to pick him up, and on my way saw another cop car driving towards the factory, lights off. I picked up my friend and we drove home.

Obviously no one caught us, but they riveted all of the doors shut.

Although not legal "technically," I was walking back late at night from an explore in BFE nowhere, alone, and in a totally different state from my home only to realize my car was gone. I had to have the local sheriff drop me off at the only motel in town after I had run to the State prison next door (the only sign of humanity for miles), saying my car was stolen (only to find out they were the ones who took it - via tow truck). I cried me a river and had to wire myself money from my own bank account, seeing that I had left my ATM card at home as well (I was stuck in that armpit of hell for three fucking days since the tow guy decided to leave town and evidently had no other employees to let me have my car back). Despite this wretched experience that still gives me chills to think about, it was the best explore of my life. But, definitely the most expensive explore on record.

The second most expensive, you ask? Definitely legal. We got caught in Mineral Wells at a rather, um... well-known location, and that ticket (class C, so basically like a speeding ticket, but way more expensive) was for Criminal Mischief, and cost over $450.00 US dollars. I'm still on deferred adjudication in that county, so I won't go back until the six months is up... Basically, they will dismiss the whole thing as long as I stay out of trouble in their county for six months.

Just a side note: A class C is the lowest criminal offense - no jail time and a maximum fine of 500.00 is allowed. Those bastards came as close to the financial limit as fucking possible. Jerks. I guess I can't complain too much..., they could have bumped up to a Class B and arrested me!

Both of those happened in the same month. Prior to that, I had been caught, but always let off on a warning!

I'm going with General Zod on this one about the dogs, although I have to say, that last story about the cop cars VS. foot chase sounded pretty shitty (and pretty damn funny) Although that could have ended way shittier - y'all are so lucky you didn't get caught!
As a general rule, I never would try to run from the actual cops (security is a different story), although that one time I was caught in Mineral Wells, we tried to hide, but we almost met them face to face on the stairwell before we knew it and were penned on the topside of a giant bell tower... I don't know if I would have tried to hide or run if I'd known who they were, but we had no idea they were even cops.

So, Piecat, what region were you guys in? Was this in the US? But more importantly.., Was it worth it?

A cop pointing a 12 gauge pump at your chest from 10 feet away tends to get your attention... fun times.

What really disturbs me about this one is how many times I've heard this nearly identical experience.

What the hell, was this an active bomb factory in North Korea? Why would the police have such a response, and why would two random people care so much?

Dee Ashely, it was a decent sized town in Wisconsin. Was it worth it? Yeah, only because we weren't caught.

Steed, I think the reason the two ladies cared so much is because the whole factory was contaminated with "Toxic Waste"... They probably didn't have anything better to do either... But actually the whole neighborhood is contaminated with Polychlorinated Biphenyls. It was in the machining coolant, which they poured down the floor drains, out the back door, and even into the nearby river.

As for the cops, I don't know why they cared so much. Maybe they thought we were making a meth lab? Or just didn't have anything better to do? Who knows.

Well, I don't exactly know if we're the reason...

There has been plenty of vandalism since it got riveted shut.

I did a stupid today, UER. I was really hoping I wouldn't have to post on one of these threads for a while, but here I am. I wrote this a lot longer than I should have by the way.

I went with one of my good friends to an abandoned factory I've been to a few times. I've never had any issues at the area before, so I didn't think anything of it. To preface, my usual POE was (poorly) welded shut a few months prior, so the new POE involved climbing on the roof. No big deal, but there's a small portion of roof where it is possible to be seen from the surrounding neighborhoods. Also, my favorite little opening in the fence surrounding the place had been addressed, so the only way in was over the front fence. Also no big deal, it's so overgrown that it's very difficult to be seen.

Anyway, we maneuvered our way onto the premises, and all is going well. We made our (admittedly bold) way across the roof to our entry point, and headed on in. So far, so good.

We're in the building for no less than five minutes before I hear a police *WOOP*. I'm a little spooked, but I told myself that there's a big road right outside the building, and it could be for anything. Sadly, it wasn't.
I slowly made my way to a door that wasn't sealed, and listened outside for a minute.

"[REDACTED] Police Department, please exit the building."
nope

With a brick firmly planted in my pants, we quickly dipped into the basement. The basement, as one would guess, is completely pitch black. After a brief exploration of the basement, we find a fun, moldy little corner to quietly weigh our options. It is at this point I got a text. It was a picture of my friend's motorcycle parked next to my car at a nearby park.

My fucking savior had arrived, and I frantically called him up and asked him to scope out the area.
10 nerve wracking minutes passed before my phone began to ring. He said there's a police Explorer parked up against the fence we hopped to get in.

Fuck.

We spent 15 more minutes listening to the police scanner, googling codes and trying to see if they were talking about us. They weren't, not only because we were not committing burglary with explosives (code 464), and because my dumb ass was listening to the wrong county. My vibrating phone cut the silence. My friend had told me the cop left the building, but was patrolling slowly around the area. My friend drove back to where my car was parked because he thought the cops might be suspicious of him. No better time to leave than now, I guess.

We headed out the same way we came in, and scouted the road from a position on the roof. Slowly, we crept across the roof, taking much care in not attracting any attention from the neighbors.

Mid journey, there was a siren in the distance.
NOPE

We hauled blazing ass across the rest of the roof, driveway, and up and over the fence. We did it. We escaped from the cops. It was a small journey down the road, through a nearby park, and to freedom. We just had to not get stopped on the way. Sadly, this didn't happen.

Hardly seconds after we get on the sidewalk, a police Explorer turned on the road. Without lights on, he pulled up next to us. He steps out of the vehicle. If I can just bullshit my way through this, I'll be a free man.

In a surprisingly un-coplike tone, he asked us what we were doing.
"Just taking pictures of the building, officer."
He gets our IDs and went on in a very friendly manner,
"Cool, were you in that building at all?"
"No, officer."
He then began to explain how he got a call about two people in the building. He reached inside the door, and pulled out MY FUCKING KEYS. He said he found them outside the fence, and how they belonged to a vehicle in a nearby park.

This is when everything gets shitty.

I knew it was over. I explained to him everything we were doing, how we got in, and how we were just taking pictures. But this whole time, he was just, so, nice. He radioed this information in, to which he gets the order to write trespassing tickets.

"Well, you heard the man."

He got in the vehicle and wrote the tickets. We joked about the whole ordeal, about how the doors weren't welded last time I was here, and how I won't drop my keys next time.

He got out of the vehicle with the printouts and my keys. He said they're kind of expensive, but there's nothing he could do about it. He said he knows it's cool inside, but there's asbestos and mold in there. His inflection implied he didn't really believe what he was saying, but he had to because he was currently bringing the law on our asses.

"Just don't go inside next time, I guess."

We left, both with shiny new $218 trespassing tickets.
I'm just happy he was nice and let it go at trespassing. I've heard stories of people getting searched, thrown to the ground, and charged with B&E or vandalism. I also owe my motorcycle friend something nice. Sorry about the novel.

TL;DR, The cops got called on us, my keys fell out of my pocket hopping a fence, we spent a terrifying hour in the building, and a really understanding cop gave us trespassing tickets upon leaving. Win some lose some, I guess.

@Kippy I heard about that last night from Nyctophilia... that sucks lol. At least the officer wasn't a dick about it... I've heard from some urbex buddies in the area that some local kids had to spend the night at the police station, so at least that didn't happen to you. Still sucks though.

So the doors are welded shut now? That really blows. I liked that place. I miss the days when no one knew about it. Maybe Tim could get a white pick up truck and we could get some "EPA" decals for it and bring some tools and cut a door or two out

Kippy, that sucks.
I've never lost keys out of my back pocket but a belt tether doesn't hurt.

Once cops are calling out its usually best to comply. Some will cut you loose. Cops hate being lied to; never lie when the truth would serve you better. In his case it sounded like he had time to kill and after finding the keys it was sort of a game to him. Either way sounds like he would have cited you; that building has become a nuisance so they're stepping it up a notch

At least the shitbirds that dimed you didn't mistake your tripod for a rifle

i usually prefer my visites at midnight, harder to be seen.

Less chance of being spotted by neighbours too.

Personally i have been arrested 4 times, all for assault, 2 aggravated, spent the night in jail once. 2 of them took a year in court to clear up.

I think because of my past experience with the police, that the trespassing accusations will not scare me too much. Maybe stay calm enough to fib my away out of it.

On a side note i worked some rough places, and things often got out of hand, thats why i had so many charges against me....4 charges out of countless times it went south is not too bad
