| | | Posted by Aran I was trying to gain rooftop access to a large building earlier today, when I saw this on one of the upper- level walls near a door.
Believing that I was safe so long as the door stayed shut, I climbed up the staircase. After a minute or so, the temperature seemed to rise. Remembering something I read on a thread around here about radio transmitters, I pulled up my pants leg, and found that my ankles were noticeably hotter than the rest of my leg or body. I immediately left the area, and when I looked at the building from an adjacent parking garage, discovered that I was within 20 feet of the base of a cluster of high frequency antennas, separated only by plaster and wood. Not sure if I was ever in any danger, but from my (limited) knowledge on FM and AM antennas, it was enough to make me leave and decide not to return. Also, the rooftop access door was padlocked anyway, so I couldn't access it even if there were no antennas.
| It's a good thing you didn't stick around those radio transmitters; they'd have fried your nuts off if you decided to hang out with them.

And i only explore with the strobe setting. The standard setting is for squares. People tend to get a little upset with me, but it's the only way to truly live. -Relik |

| | | My second time ever exploring (just a few months ago): I was out with two friends walking around a pretty popular site (it was all we knew about at the time, it is an abandoned train station of sorts that is relatively common for graffiti artists, teenagers, etc). We were there late on a weekday night and didn't expect to run into anyone at all, and the place was dead quiet when we got there. As we are getting ready to leave, we hear footsteps and voices, so we try to stay hidden until we figure out what's going on. We see that it's two people walking towards us, and they've got a flashlight. We were all new to exploration in general, and just assumed it was the cops or something, and that we were in deep shit. Turned out to just be a guy and his girlfriend walking around. We chatted for a bit and he gave us some good photo tips for the place, after he told us he had been there many times. It was a really cool first encounter of sorts, and my first run-in with other explorers. Overall, we had a good time, and have kept going with our new hobby of exploring.

| | | There were 3 moments: 1. We were a few floors up in a building when were reach a corner with a wall torn down and hear laughing. I look down and see a teenager in the adjacent building and possibly 1 or 2 more given the amount of laughter. We asked them how to get into the tunnel and one of them tells us he knows how, so we go down and it turns out there were 6-7 of them instead. They were all quiet and huddled around in a circle, and thats when I thought, "this is it, we're going to get shanked or mugged or something." O, on the other hand, wasn't the least bit worried. 2.We went into an abandoned malting plant and ventured in a bit more when we came across a little area where someone seemed to have been squatting, looked closer and found a gun. We were taken aback, but when we realized that it was a fake, we continued our exploration. 3. We were leaving a building, when suddenly a light turns on. We keep going: yet another one. By then we were sure we were going to get caught and started running as fast as we could in the opposite direction.

| | | I've been actively exploring for a bit over a year now, but I've only had a few real "Oh Shit" moments. 1) I was with a friend exploring a huge psych center that has been abandoned for a while. It was our first time there, so we weren't really familiar with the facility. To top it off, we were still fairly inexperienced at this point. We'd just explored a rec center and an administration building, and were walking around admin to get to some patient buildings. Well, we didn't realize that we could walk behind admin and get to these buildings without walking on the main road. Just as we turn the corner, I see a truck driving toward us. "Oh...shit." I look at my friend and we very briefly consider running, but we decided to just walk toward the truck and wave. Truck stops next to us and rolls down his window, it's an off duty cop. Another "Oh shit". Well, we were carrying tripods and had our cameras around our necks still, so the guy must not have felt too bad about us since we ended up having a conversation about the place. He was telling us about how likes checking out photos from inside, and how he drives around with a Go Pro in the winter. He told us that fall was a nicer time of year to come since a lot of the plants would be dead, and the buildings more visible, and gave us permission to walk around the property for a bit. His only word of advice, "Just don't let me see you again." Now, we considered just leaving at that point, but where would the fun be in that? So we spent the rest of the day exploring, got into most of what we wanted. Except...we had another "Oh Shit" in the last building we explored. 2) We were heading out of the property, and it involved walking by this large, fairly modern hospital that had been closed for about 10 years. We walked around the building, looking for ways in, finding nothing. But then we found it, an unlocked exterior stairwell (really just an enclosed fire escape). In we go! Every floor was locked, except for one, several stories up. Full access to the hospital. We spent a few hours in there, exploring the whole building. It was about 15 stories tall so we were tired, we'd been exploring for the whole day, so we decided to head out. Where's the exit? We went to the floor we thought it was on, locked stairwell. It looked right, but why is it locked? We crawled up and down that building for hours trying to find that door again, or any other way out, but nothing. Turns out, the building is shaped like a W, and we were just getting mixed up on what side of the building we were on. Eventually we found our door, and peaced right on out of there. Of course, now I know that the best way to get in and out of there is through the tunnels...

| | | Was in a building on opposite sides of the room from my friend. I was changing lenses on my camera, she was off looking at graffiti. Large room, i was in a somewhat closed off storage type area where the ceiling was more intact because i worried about crap falling inside my camera with the lens off. Anyway, a guy with a gasmask walked in, pointed a gun at her, and i was behind him unseen at this point. He wasn't saying anything. Thing is, i carry a bowie knife with me when exploring. Mainly meant for animals, since there are often mountain lions roaming around these buildings, but it's a huge knife. Ordered it on amazon, the description said it's 14 inches. Turns out, it's a 14 inch *blade* with a handle that puts it up to almost two feet. I can double hand this thing. I thought... shit. Either i find a way to stop this guy or we're both dead (probably). We were out in the middle of nowhere. Obviously wasn't the property owner since it was originally government property 40 years ago and has been abandoned since. My first thought was... double hand this gigantic knife and swing it at the back of his neck as hard as i can the second his gun isn't pointed right at her, and hopefully break it and maybe that will do him in. Didn't end up having to, because a second later someone shot him right in the head from the door. *splat* Yellow blood poured out, and he just looked over mildly annoyed at the guy who had shot him, and lowered his gun, which i realized had an orange tip. And... that was the day i almost killed a guy with a paintball gun.

| | | Paintball story wins. A couple weeks ago I was in San Pedro Sula, Honduras (the murder capital of the world) with my wife. She runs some non-profit art therapy programs and was asked to come down and try a few out at 4 children's homes down there. My friend and I went with to do some construction projects and photography for the foundation that works with the homes. Our mode of transportation was 6 people in the back of a blue Ford Ranger. We were about to wrap up a morning at the mountain home and a lady asked if we wanted to check out the abandoned church just above it. That was an easy decision. So we walked up there and were shooting a bit (mostly just the husk of the building left) and all of sudden a truck pulls out with 5 cops in it with a motorcycle duo to follow. I don't speak a lick of Spanish and it was really unclear why they came up on us with their AK47's. For the longest time we couldn't figure out if they were there for us or what. It became odder when they asked to take photos with us. Still unclear of the situation I felt like breaking the ice and hover handed the stolid faced female cop next to me and one of the guy cops saw and gave me the universal "OMG, totally do it, she's a total hard ass and I've never seen her smile," smile faced nod. She never broke character but did lean in. After the photos we were finally let in that they were there for our protection. That a good Samaritan had caught wind that bandits were planning on ambushing us on the way down and informed the police. They insisted on us leaving with them and gave us protective detail caravan down the mountain and across town to the next children's home. They took photos again once we reached there (I learned as proof that they had done their job and we had all our parts still) and then two were told by their supervisor to stay with us until the end of the day. They even hung out while Noel did some art with the kids. The next time we went up to the mountain, we all piled out of the known blue Ranger and into a dummy truck and then took back roads as the blue truck took the main road up to the mountain house. Somehow the police found out again that we were up there and again escorted us down when we left. I caught this one using her phone camera to check her makeup before she asked if she could have this photo taken. She blushed like crazy.
