WARNING: long story!!

Jac steel, me and two other guys decided to explore an abandoned sky scrapper in Detroit. Getting in was not a big deal. Our first mistake was, we left our ladder by our POE. We managed to get on the roof top and get some really good pictures. When we went to go explore the first and second floor, which was being renovated, the alarm went off as soon as we stepped a foot in one of the rooms. We started working our way up the stairs to our POE. When we got to our POE, it was too late and security were already here. We can see the security walking by our ladder. By now, we know that they know we are in the building. After an hour of just staying near our POE, the security guard decides to leave. Now, the problem was that the workers of the other building are by our POE and the ladder. So we decided to work our way down and leaving right away. That hour of waiting was one the most intense moments I have had while exploring.

I had a good one happen to me a few weeks ago...

I just recently got back into exploring. We all work during the day, so we go at night. We drove a little ways to a vacant middle school - pretty good sized given the size of the town and right in the middle of a neighborhood making things somewhat tricky. I regret not bringing my camera.
We got in way too easy. The first thing I see when I walk in is a blanket with a bunch of toys surrounding it on the floor in this big open shop-type room. Kind of unnerving thinking someone had a kid there, very recently.

At the time I didn't think much of it. We kept exploring, keeping our flashlights as close to the ground as we could as all of the windows were intact. There wasn't one single ceiling tile intact in any of the hallways, creating an asbestos tile mush on the floor and making the air quality miserable.
I open a few doors, a few lead to closets or classrooms... I open another and shine my light in and oh shit! - we found the gym. Pitch black with cobwebs everywhere and a climbing rope still hanging from the ceiling. A scoreboard still hung. Creepy.

We keep going. As we went to the 2nd floor classrooms seemed to be more intact. One classroom even still had a row of desks. We get to the third floor - another fully intact classroom. Then I hear something in the darkness... I thought something was in front of us. I look up - pigeons!! At least like, 10 of them super pissed off that we shined light on them. I think one flew 4 inches from my head.

We got the fuck out of there and avoided the third floor all-together. I was terrified, just because I thought it was a person and not birds. Still, angry pigeons aren't anything to fuck with.
We kept exploring, when we found the auditorium. Totally pitch black - but every seat in there was intact even with the stage curtain set up, it was beyond creepy. I look down at the stage and see where someone literally fell through the floor.

That was enough for us, we got out of there. We were expecting a police cruiser to be waiting outside for us, but we got out without a problem.
Our POE was sealed less than a few weeks later and condemned signs were posted throughout, assuming maybe they found out someone was squatting there. Who knows.

You're from Wisconsin, aren't ya? This story is very similiar to one i've heard recently (if not exactly the same.) The school definitely had fresh padlocks when i went, only days after my buddy was there (with you, i assume.)

Spontaneous exploration that started out well.

A security or worker pulls up on our way down. We had to take this position to avoid projecting attention drawing shadows.

As soon as we take the low key position, sky starts POURING and we had to lay still and take a cold shower for 20 minutes fully clothed.

For variety of reasons, this trip was both fun and incredibly shitty.

I'm quite unlucky to have plenty of "oh shit moments", however I'm also lucky enough that nothing seriously bad came out of these situations

So yesterday evening I was checking out some new places allover my city, about 20:20 I reached my final destination for that day - a supposedly closed military base (a small one almost in the city center, don't ask...). Well... I have to admit that I didn't do my homework to good, and I didn't have to much info about it. I looked around, main gate was completely opened, just inviting in But first I checked out all the buildings that I could see from the streets - now lights, just "for sale" and names of the security company. Well, that's fine, where is the guard then? I've waited for 30min, and entered thru the main gate like a boss xD

I went ahead no more than 100meters when I heard that someone is closing the gate behind me, just "lol" and "oh shit" came to my mind, I panic a bit and increased the pace, hid behind a building and waited, wondering if the guard spotted me.

He didn't ^^ So I did a quick search for PoEs to the buildings but no luck with that. I also wanted to get some nice pictures of a power plant near that base, so I wanted to climb one of the buildings, but... there was another guard with a dog, luckily a small one, case he chased me and I needed to jump thru the fence, luckily it was easy on that side of the base, cause it's on a fucking island, with 2 rivers around Guard didn't bother, probably thinking that I was a cat ;]

So I'm a bit trapped, guard with a dog on one side, and water on the other, but my luck hasn't ended yet I called my friend, he checked satellite photos of the place, and it was possible to get out walking along the river bank, wasn't easy, but easier than getting back inside and climbing out the main gate...

I spotted two beavers on my way out, yep, near the city center - don't ask xD
And most importantly I've learned my lesson.

Sound like a lot of fun! I had a similar situation where the guards came in to the place and I paniced and couldn't find my way out.

Posted this to my journal, but I'll add it here too:

Dad and I were at a campground in Powell Missouri, we happened to see an old ramshackle farmhouse alongside a dirt road not far from the campground.
We had just gotten back from an all day float trip, so we decided to wait until the next day to check it out, as it was only a mile or so from the camp.

So next day we hike back to the location and discover that the place is pretty well overgrown and falling in somewhat, but there is a small "deer path" leading back around the house towards some old sheds and a small barn.
As we are walking down this path with me in the lead, my Dad suddenly says "stop!" in a tone of voice that is all too serious. He comes up next to me and points over my shoulder and asks me to look where he's pointing and tell him what I see. At first I don't see anything and then I see something shiny at about ankle level.

It was monofilament fishing line stretched taut along the path. Upon further examination, we see more of it further down the small animal trail. The strands are quite long, and some of them are attached inside the barn where we can't see.

Not knowing if it's hooked up to a crossbow or something designed to kill would be intruders, or just a scare tactic, (and not wanting to find out) we retraced our steps back to the road, careful to look for any more booby traps or dangers along the way, and got the hell out of there!

My speculations are that it was probably a bluff to scare kids, as there was no source of power to the place, (the roof was falling in too) and no chemical smells indicating a meth lab, but then again, I didn't want to risk my ass trying to find out WHAT was in there!
the tripwires were up high enough that small animals would easily go under them, but people would probably hit them.
The path was small and didn't show signs of frequent use by people, leading more to the speculation it was fake.

Be alert out there, be safe, and don't get killed by an angry hick because you stumbled upon his moonshine still

Went by myself on a goal I had a long time. Bike ride 25km on a dirt road to a radio tower. Take some pictures and then back of course.

Got to the tower, went into it (easy peasy). Was taking some pictures when all of a sudden a heard a motorcycle, it sounded very close to me. I grabbed my bag and got out of the fence and hid in some tall grass. My guess? Its probably a radio tower worker coming to maintenance it. Great....

The noise stopped and I got up to check it out. Nothing. Then it started again, I looked, it was the generator. The generator is from 60's and sounds rumbling. Sounds so stupid now when I look back at it :p

My "oh shit" moment was in an abandoned industrial building. It was nighttime and dark, and I saw a large open industrial door. I walked up to it and realized that it was an elevator shaft and that I almost stepped into a void.

So I decided to revisit an old site, a toy factory that I've been to once before. Everything was going well, all signs pointed go, and my new camera wielding friend was along. As we booked it towards the entrance there was someone by the POE.
We stopped. He stopped. We stared at each other and I noticed he had a pipe of some sort in his hand.
"You trying to get in?" I ask.
"No.". We stare. II start to move past him and he goes, "oh I thought you were cops. You know a way in?" He go!lows us then disappears.
My posse freezes and returns to the street to regroup and figure out what just happened and what to do next. Kid comes back with supplies, but disappears again on entry. We decide to continue, but we hear a "yo" from the street.
We ran for cover and waited until him and his friend who came from nowhere disappeared and then I made my way back out.

I wouldn't have minded joining a posse but any posse that tries to catch my attention by shouting yo from the street gives me the spooks. I shall return.

And this is my oh shit moment. Twice.

Had a pretty close call with security the other day that definitely had me thinking oh shit at the time.

So basically, I'm at a construction site to climb a crane, and getting into the building itself requires walking on a 2 foot wide path, with a high fence on one side, and a 50 foot deep pit and bright lights on the other, so while walking it, you're extremely visible, and have nowhere to hide or run.
After hearing a noise while climbing the stairs up the building, I decide not to risk getting caught, so I begin leaving, and as I'm walking along this path, I look back and see a guard scanning the construction yard, but he hasn't seen me yet, so I sprint to the end of the path, and dive under an excavator (still about 30 feet from the exit, so I'd rather not be seen yet) I ended up having to lie there for 5 minutes while he searched, but luckily he didn't find me.

That was definitely my oh shit moment of the month.

I was once in an old farmhouse, and as I tried to open this one door, it flung open to about a thirty foot drop. Not a good time.

^ this reminded me of a recent trip to a school. Climbed the ridiculous gate to get to the open window we saw. I entered the window only to discover I was standing on a piece of machinery very high up in the air with no way down. Oh Shit. NOpe.

I was in a sub basement room taking a dump holding on to a 6-8 foot long, 4" diameter,1/4" thick steel pipe. It was one of 5 that were in stored in brackets anchored to the wall. The loose pipes were about 3 feet off the floor. Quite sturdy... in appearances only... no sooner then I had leaned back with my pants down to my ankles when the anchor bolts went *snap*!
Really? Fuck...
Mind you I was only putting about 50 pounds or less of pull on it to help balance myself on the slippery concrete. Now I have a couple hundred pounds of steel coming down towards my feet and legs. I jumped back as best I could and landed on my back as the pipes came crashing down just missing my feet. Yes, well... I had to pull my one boot out from under a pipe, but other than pride and some slime was uninjured.
Oh shit... that could have been bad.

Never trust anything anchored into concrete or brick in old buildings.

A while back I didn't check how well a steel ladder was attached to a chimney, so I reach the top, and the ladder starts bending backwards and pulling it's now essentially non-existant rusty bolts out one by one...
I practically slid down the ladder, but in future I'll hopefully remember to at least check (and maybe just not climb it), so I won't get myself into that kind of situation.

This weekend I had another pretty good scare of another nature. I was out exploring some rather unstable buildings with Sanitarium Sean this weekend. On the couple hundred acre campus we knew we weren't alone, but hadn't run into anybody. We got into this one building, and we figured out quickly from the footsteps above that this building had others in it. We were on our way to go see upstairs and say hello to the others upstairs, but as I was approaching the doorway, one of them fell halfway through the floor just a couple feet in front of me. His foot hit a sturdy pipe, otherwise he may have gone all the way through. Everyone was alright, but I nearly needed fresh pants.

At the Downingtown Sunoco Paper Mill about 40 feet up on the boiler smoke stack are some bent rebar climbing rungs. One of the demo workers was free climbing it when the rebar gave way under the weight of his foot. He then realized -all- the rungs were in a similar state. He gingerly climbed down.
That's scary.

While not specifically MY oh shit moment, you have to see this;

https://www.youtub...atch?v=miQFqE0UrFo

Some guys who sounded rather irritable were going by checking if they heard something, possibly homeless, and they were RIGHT behind the door he was hiding behind, plus he had no way out. How's that for CLENCH inducing?

I decided to make a little map because it's too late at night for me to try to use my brain to try to explain where everything happened in this.

A little while back a buddy of mine and me were out trekking around the city as I was taking him out for his first real urban exploring excursion. We ended up rolling into so e of the rougher Pittsburgh neighborhoods and we eventually ended up right by my childhood house and decided to try some abandoned manufacturing buildings off of the main drag. You had to go through an alley to get to them b/c a wall separates the buildings from the mainstreet b/c they are on lower ground.
It's about 10:00PM at this point. Not a great time to be wondering around in the hood but whatever. My thought was, "we're a street over from the maindrag, the police station is right down the street, I have a knife in my car, I'm from this area so I know how to handle myself, and plus who the fuck would be down there?" We walked down the alley and realized from looking at the back of the one building it was a grow house or a meth lab so we just kept going and hung a right to head away from the building. Half way down that other alley; we decided to turn around and take the fastest route to my car to leave b/c something didn't feel right. Immediately after doing so a black Cadillac SUV with tinted windows flies down the tight alley at us, blasting loud rap music. It passed us but it was disconcerting. We hurried down the main alley back to my car on the gravel parking...mound...and we begin to pull out of the little fenced in area when a pickup blocks us in. We both assume we're about to die at this point, but I proceed to back up, back into the parking area. The guy in the pickup passes through while giving us the dirtiest look imaginable. We realized he was hauling lawnmowers which was a little settling but we were still pretty shaken and I fucking gunned it outta there.
