This toronto uer meet me, boffo, and another were on our way to the Wellington destructor. We looked around but it can't be accessed and is slated for demo. What we did find was a now empty slaughterhouse directly behind it though. After going in, the scariest thing was some native american chanting in the distance we heard from inside. Okay not bad. So we're going on up to the cutting floor and we notice, unlike in the pens.

THE LIGHTS ARE ON.

Nothing too bad, right? So we go through the building, don't run into anyone, and I got curious and opened a first aid shack door.

Bad idea, it only had one hinge and creaked LOUDLY. Boffo just gave me the most "What in the hell did you just do" look, and I just looked back, realising I just f'd up. The noise was loud enough to hear from outside. Luckily there really was nobody there, below is a link to a photo of the door.

One thing I've learned from this thread is the usefulness of pickup trucks on explorations.
Especially in a rural area, they tend to kind of blend in and make you look like "just another herdsman".

I've also parked my semi near a few abandonments on occasion and no one thought any thing of it.

A few months ago, I was exploring a hotel with some friends that's pretty notorious for being hard to get into. Whoever owns the place does a great job of making sure no one gets in, seeing as the only POE takes a lot of climbing and timing your moves just right.

Now, my friends had been here many, many times before so I followed whatever they wanted me to do. Looking back, it was an easy explore, but again, required a lot of climbing down ladders and through small window panes. Once inside, I was completely amazed at how well kept up it was. I believe the hotel shut down around ten years ago, but aside from black mold and a few various pieces of trash scattered throughout, it's very pristine.

And fucking huge.

Even though my friends had been here often, we ended up finding a brand new room of washers and driers! It was incredible. The floor we were on, I want to say the third or fourth, had a lot of office-like rooms, even one that was filled to the brim of party supplies. We had all started to make quite a bit of noise at this point seeing as we weren't worried about running into anyone else. We probably should have shut up.

Myself and a friend take the lead on going to the next floor. The rest of our group followed eventually, and when we were debating going down the hallway to the left or right - the loudest fucking noise I have ever heard comes from down the hall to the right. Honest to God, it sounded like someone slammed one of the doors shut so hard it could have broken the hinges. I've never wanted to poop my pants while exploring until that moment. Without even thinking, we all run in unison up about eleven flights of stairs to the roof.

We never actually figured out who or what that was, but it was definitely a person. There are no broken windows anywhere on the building, thus no way for wind to do something like that. I was absolutely dreading having to go back inside to get back out, but luckily, our way out was through an active building.

Even better, our night ended with what we assumed were police helicopters flying overhead while on top of the roof. They circled us about three times before we decided to stop wasting time in the open.

Fun night!

It's certainly not a super interesting story, nor is it intensely "oh shit", but here it goes.. I was in a nursing home and just after getting off the downstairs, a bat swoops down by my head and proceeds to flap down the hall.

There is a factory near me that I have explored several times. One time I was just scouting it out, and found a new POE so I decided to run in alone. It had a lot of stair ways and railings leading up to the top. As i climbed up, I realized I couldn't do it with my all camera bags, and clipped them to one of the staircases. After I ran around the building I started to climb down. Right as I did I noticed an older lady and really sketchy looking tattooed dude come in. Again I was alone and didn't have a weapon so I wasn't sure what to do. I was much higher than they were so I just sat and watched and planned my move, not forgetting my camera was hanging right above them and they were by the only way out. As I watched I saw the dude pull a piece of brown tissue paper out of his pocket, and I definitely thought it was some sort of drug. I knew I couldn't wait forever so I called out nonchalantly to let them know I was there filming for something but made sure to keep the camera keep running. It was nerve racking, but I climbed down and walked out past them through the door. Nothing obviously happened but I'm pretty sure I know why they were there. On the way out I passed through an underpass and saw another heavily tattooed dude going in to meet the two already there. Scariest experience with people yet!

Honestly, it's very possible they were just there to explore the same as you. Heavily tattooed people can be explorers too!

I know exactly the place you're talking about! I love this building!

Haha yeah true true, I have a tattoos myself. I've run into several explorers & photographers at that location before, but I just got a really weird vibe that time. But nothing happened so I'm probably just paranoid lol.

And yeah it was a great location. It's a shame they tore it half down and boarded up the building next door.

I was exploring an abandoned factory, the second time I've been there. I knew there was security, but I've never seen them come out of a little trailer/shed building far on the other side of the property. So, I was happily snapping pictures, when I suddenly hear an engine. I think little of it, as the sight is directly off a busy industrial road. But it gets louder. Suddenly, from behind a ton of brush, comes a beat-up security truck. I quickly hid myself behind a support, but it was skinnier than I was (I swear, less than 10 inches). The truck passes right by me, I could see the guard's face.

I waited like 30 seconds for the truck to go away, and then continue. I'm wasn't going to waste a 40 minute drive. I keep walking around, taking pictures. Then I hear the truck again. Quickly, I hide behind an old door, but then the engine stops and the guard gets out and starts walking toward me.

So I walked out and talked with him, and he was cool with me being there, but god, my heart was pounding for a few minutes there.

I was at a location where the POE was very small and required you to crawl on your stomach if you didn't want to ascend the side of the building by wedging yourself in between two walls and risk an injurious fall. Needless to say, I surveyed the area and crawled on in. My friends and I spent about an hour on the inside shooting and exploring when we heard police sirens. I wasn't worried because I was confident no one had seen us enter the building and we had reasonably quiet once inside. How ever, from an upper level window I took a peak and saw what at the time looked like a large amount of police officers dismount their motorcycles lights blaring and group together discussing something. I descended to the lowest level and cautiously looked out at a group of 7-8 officers standing just 100 or so feet from our restricted POE. I sat for a minute and watched the officers hop on their motorcycles flip on their sirens and lights and drive off a ways. Then my friends and I took the opportunity and dragged ourselves out of the hole just in time to stand up, brush off and give a wave to the police officers who were focused in their group motorcycle maneuvers which they had come to the empty parking lot to practice.

Was driving around back roads when I noticed a wall of a building and a hole in the fence, decided to just to a quick recon of the location to see if it was worth making a more dedicated trip, I was in the building for all of three minutes when a sheriff's car drives by, (it was windy back roads and like an idiot I was parked it the ditch), lucky for me however the sheriff doesn't have a place to pull off or park so he keeps driving. Miles from anything else, so its pretty obvious that I'm in the location.

The building was just a graffiti-ed out shell that was definitely not worth getting caught for so I make a run for it hoping that he is not staking me out from farther up the road. Get in the car and out of the ditch when the sheriff comes back slows down gives me a strange look and drives away.

I've had lots of smaller moments that could have ended far worse than they did, but there are three events that come to mind, which at the time just had me stop immediately, quietly watch and listen, and then whisper "SHIT" or something similar to that under my breath as I start to panic.

The first was last summer, I had been scouting out a few locations, and ended up noticing a large abandoned building as I was about to go home. Of course I navigated my way over to it, and found the front door to be unlocked. Thinking it was probably rare to have an access point into it, I decided to go for it and start exploring. First thing I see when I go in is a large pool of red, which I dismissed as fake blood (which it probably was) put there to spook anyone in there, although it still put me on edge. So I'm making my way up this 10 and a bit story building, when I hear what I thought was footsteps. Again I dismiss it, thinking it's pigeons, and continue my way up. I finally reach the top full floor (there were 3 more partial sized floors above it) and as I'm making my way around, trying to find a ladder to get farther up, I hear more footsteps, stop, listen, and as I'm about to continue, I hear a loud bang of a door slamming open, and hear frantic running towards me. I of course sprint down the stairs and out of there, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have ended well had they caught me.

The second happened this year. While climbing a crane with a friend, we finally reach the top, climb out to the end of the boom, and when looking at a building next to us, see a few people looking out. Not sure if they've seen us or not, we start to make our way down, just in case. As we reach the bottom, I hear sirens, and as we walk towards the edge of the roof to watch them, I jokingly say "I bet they'll park next to this building". They did. So now we watch as firemen pour out of their truck, and start walking across the street to talk to someone who seemed to be looking at the crane. So we're already pretty panicked, and then we see police and an ambulance, sirens on, speeding towards us. At this point we don't wait any longer, and begin sprinting down, we reach the bottom as the police pull in, and luckily there's a fence between us. We quietly made our way out, and just high-tailed it from there, not waiting to see what happened.

The final one, was when I was on the roof of a vacant cookie factory. I find an unlocked door, and go in, check it out inside, and for some reason I think "was there a door alarm on it?" After checking, there was. So I start to leave, and decide to take a peek over the edge at the section of the building security was using as headquarters. At least 5 guys wielding flashlights are coming out, and shining them around looking everywhere, I audibly say "crap" before I can catch myself, and one of them looks up and shines the light right at me. From there I just ran back to where I'd climbed up, got away, and then sat on a bench a fair distance away, watching as security patrolled around the whole facility. I'm still a bit confused why they wouldn't instead go to the roof to look for me, but I'm glad they didn't.

My eternal fear.

Happened to me recently. I went twice to a demo site, first time my camera ran out of battery, the second time I lost my sd card. Thats not an oh shit moment, but my oh shit moment took place at the same demo site.

We (group of 4) parked our car about a half mile away, walked to our location, and prepared to make entry. We got in, one of the easiest entries ever. We explored, took pics, etc. On the way out, we saw a suspicious car, and split up into two's to be more discrete. The first group started crossing the same sports fields to get back, and made it to the shelter on the other side. Still being sketched out by the car, I started to cross, but instantly something felt wrong, so I ordered myself and the person I was with to get back and hide quick, so we dove behind some porta-potties. As soon as we got there, the cop floodlights hit the fields, and we hit the deck. When the lights went off again we crawled back and dove into the woods on the other side, where we ended up camping for 2 hours, while the cops were camping by the field, waiting for us. We eventually called another friend, and, after a long walk through the woods and peoples' yards, made it to another road for pickup. We later found out the cops were investigating a report, in which a resident nearby had seen the 4 of us walking in the direction of the building. I have never been so scared as I was watching the floodlights on the field and realizing that if something hadn't felt off, me and my friend would be in the back of a cop car.

Fortunately, it appears these carcinogens were of such fine vintage that the owner was at loath to leave them behind, and thus made sure to take them with when he left.

I had a proper 'oh shit' moment today.

I was exploring a mill with a few friends today and was standing in the doorway of a small room to photograph the piece of mill machinery inside. I took the shot and stepped out of the doorway, and a few seconds later heard a huge crash and looked back to see a whole load of wood and a heavy piece of pipe fall into the doorway right where I had been standing moments before. It turned out one of our group had been walking on the floor above and it gave way without warning, luckily he didn't fall through all the way but it made a mess of the floor he was stood on. Had I stayed in that room any longer all of the debris would have landed on my head.

Had a minor "Oh Shit" moment while exploring a steel mill yesterday. I was up on a crane maybe 50 feet in the air taking some pictures. I was out to almost the center of the walkway along the front of the crane when I took a step and felt the metal beneath my foot start to crumble. I immediately stepped back as I hear rust falling to the floor below. I looked down to see a indentation about twice the size of my foot in the metal floor.

Here's a picture my friend took. I was almost to underneath the Tiger Crane sign when the floor started to give way.

This would not have been a very pleasant fall...
