Forgive me for cross-posting, but I wanted to share here with people that would appreciate the way local authorities respond here in Texas.

Time: 11:15am CMT
Location: Small Town, Texas
Objective: Timecapsule Home

The day started out simply enough, with us planning a small roadtrip to a number of locations around the state. We stopped first at a small house on the side of the road, overgrown with ivy and brush. I couldn't even see it initially because it was so obscured with vegetation. We entered and the house was a step back in time.

Possessions still litter the home.

The kitchen, while dusty, was still in order. Stacked dishes and glassware wait for their owner to put them to use. But the only ones disturbing the cabinets are the birds nesting there.

Much of the house appears untouched, as if the owner just vanished one day and nobody ever returned to the house afterwards. Clothes still hang in the closet, toothbrushes remain in place. While in a beautiful state of pause, the actual house is falling apart. I put my foot through the floorboards at least once.

As far as we can gather, the last resident memories of this home were of an old woman receiving hospice care. The shower and tub were used as storage for clothes. A hospital bed sits in the living area, with a rocking chair next to it, presumably for company or a caretaker to sit.

Normally the write-up would end there, but the story needs a little more adrenaline than that. As we were finishing our shooting and getting ready to leave, we notice a car parked outside. We continue gathering up our gear and hope the car leaves. Instead I see a man in uniform approach the house and draw his weapon. Uniform enters gun drawn, aiming it at one of my partner's chest.
"Hands Up! Nobody move or I'll shoot!" I've never been so still. Uniform appears jumpy and I'm not about to provoke him. After a few moments of a stand off we are escorted outside, and joined by Officer Green Shirt, and the questioning begins.
No, there are no drugs on us.
Yes, we know we should not be here.
Yes, you can search our gear.
No, we are just taking pictures.
Yes, we know that is a weird hobby.
About this time Uniform (turns out to be a Game Warden) informs us that he thought one of our tripods was a shotgun and he was about to open fire. Classic Texas. As they run our licenses (clean), Officer Belt Buckle arrives. Guy looks exactly like Hank from Breaking Bad, and talks like him too: "Listen, there are people in this world. People that will hurt you. You don't know who could be in that house. Could be whites, could be blacks. Mexicans. Could even be Muslims. I don't know. Point is you need to be careful." At this point we realize they are not going to arrest us. Instead Belt Buckle gives us some tips on who to contact in another city to get permission to explore some abandonments there. Thanks Hank!
No shots fired. No arrests. No tickets. No warnings.
One hell of a story.

Laughed so hard at this. But this guy has apparently never heard of Samurai and Ninjas.

Also, we should paint your tripod "Hunting Vest Orange" so they know its not a fucking shotgun.

It certainly could be; there are good in bad in all races. The officer may have worded it oddly, but his point was valid.

This is an excellent idea.

There is the famous case of U.S. military killing a photojournalist in Iraq because they mistook his tripod for a weapon. They hyped themselves up over a period of time, first describing it as a "possible weapon" until they finally convinced themselves they had it positively identified it.

Yeah, I don't think that was his point. He could have said something like, "Could be photographers, could be scrappers. Local kids. Could even be fugitives. I don't know". He worded what he said the way he did intentionally.

YOU FORGOT WHAT YOU FOUND AT GRANDMA'S! Hahahaha. This is a completely laughable story...now. Then, with a loaded weapon pointed at you...not so much. :/

I agree. Probably the same type of guy that believes that ISIS is setting up sleeper cells in small town America. If I hadn't just had a gun pointed at my friends and I, I might have said something about it. But at that point we were being let off and I was not about to say something sideways.

And thank you, but the credit actually goes to Tiffers are far as I am aware. She has been there previously. But you are right, the place is a stellar find considering the items still left over. I think the overgrowth has a lot to do with that.

His point is so valid it didn't have to be said. Bringing race into it is stupid. "There are bad people out there"

"Duh" is my response.

It's like when a complete stranger sees me getting on my motorcycle and tells me to "Be careful and watch for other drivers" ... Yeah, thanks lady, I was actually planning on riding recklessly and blind folded.

Yep, it is exactly like when people tell you to be careful on your motorcycle! While you don't need to be reminded, there are those who do.

I take the officer's "could be statement to mean "you can't tell people's intentions by looking at them". Had the officer said "they might be young; they might be old", no one would be offended.

Often we are just too sensitive about race. While it is understandable why we are, but I don't think we should read things into that probably are not what the speaker intended.

To be fair, neither of us were offended by his statement. Hahaha. I found it hilarious, and of course, Indo got good laughs too, as we drove away.

I don't think it has anything to do with sensitivity. I think he seriously feels Islam is a threat, but wasn't about to state it outright. There was no reason to bring up race (or age for that matter). If he truly wanted to warn me about dangers, he would have mentioned rapists, murderers, drug dealers, and meth heads. He didn't. He brought up race without anyone else mentioning it. I'm not terribly offended and I thought it was more funny than anything. But I do wonder what would have happened if we were black or Mexican, or heaven forbid recognizably Muslim.

They were game wardens, not small town coppers. And also, you don't know if they have had recent problems in the area.

What a story--I'm glad y'all came out unscathed.

Yup. Welcome to small-town, TX. *eye-roll*

Thanks again everyone! This sort of place seems right up your alley Attic, minus the game wardens of course. I know how you enjoy rural explorations.

I was wondering the same thing about the preserved fruits and vegetables.

The one thing that keeps bugging me about the whole incident is that the warden did not announce himself outside of the building. I'm not sure what he was thinking. Maybe he was trying to sneak up on us, I just don't know. But I feel like announcing yourself is always the best way to go.

Generally not a good idea to try and sneak up on anyone on private property in Texas, law enforcement or not. With the laws here it's shoot 1st and questions fall somewhere down the list about 75 or so. Thats what scares me so much about doing old houses here - everyone in this state is armed.
