While exploring "ichabod train" with RGB years ago we were climbing under a train car to get to another row of cars and came nose to nose with a large Rottweiler. He was just as surprised to see us as we were him. Talk about Oh shit...

The other night I went down to check out a previously very popular spot, which has now been pretty well secured and is actively guarded. I mainly went to take pics, and possibly see if there were any good ways in, but it ended up being fairly interesting.

There's a nearby overpass that I went up on for pics first, and saw that security was parked inside the only dark area on the whole huge building. As I walked back down, preparing to stroll on by at ground level, I was figuring getting harassed by security might be my biggest issue. However, as I walked by for the first time at ground level, a trucker came down the road from behind me and then slowed to a crawl as he went by. Then, right in front of me, he turned into the driveway of this place, stopped, and honked twice.

At this point it was maybe an, 'Oh, boy' moment. I just kept walking, and to my dismay, the truck started backing up... but not into the road, alongside it, obviously keeping pace with me as he honked another time.

Now it was sort of, 'Oh, crap' and I just kept walking. He kept backing up beside me, being creepy, and I was beginning to get nervous. The fact that he didn't get out and confront me was good, but still this was weird. I quickly turned and took a picture of the back of his rig, hoping that maybe if he knew I had a phone he would back off. He kept backing up.

Then I think I said a couple of 'Oh, shit's to myself, but kept walking, knowing there was a park not far away where I could duck in and get away momentarily. I figured I could outrun many truckers anyway. Finally the guy stopped, then did a 3-point turn and backed his truck up the one of the gates of the place I was checking out. He honked one more time.

'Oh shit' was definitely a thought now, but I was not going to run from this creep, so I just turned around, tried to look like a tough guy, and gave him the finger. I wasn't doing anything wrong anyway, and at this point he was pissing me off more than creeping me out. I just kept walking and looped back around to the overpass, getting some more pics while I calmed down and realized that it was probably just a bored trucker trying to freak me out. Either that or trying to pick me up, but I don't roll that way, sorry buddy.

After looping back again, I saw that he had left his trailer backed up to the gate, and his cab was parked under the overpass, but I didn't see anyone in there. I guess this wasn't much of an 'Oh shit' but just really creepy because I was alone.

Damn, how long ago was that? I know someone else who got stopped by the cops there. They were waiting at the door when they came out. Didn't realize they'd have the dog w/ him as well. Was it the neighbor, or maybe the parking lot attendant?

The one time I was there, I wasn't there very long, but there was a cop car screaming up the street when I was walking away. (of course, it could be going anywhere in that city)

This was sometime last summer, I believe around June. I am 95% sure it was one of the guys at the neighboring building. The cops wouldn't tell me who but he pretty much gave himself away as he stood there with his arms crossed, saying that he would press charges should I return, as I walked past him.

My friends and I primarily explore a somewhat recently closed factory, it being so big that we've made multiple trips just to map out the whole place. One of the times we were in this office section of the building. I just so happened to be looking out a window towards the other end of the complex, when I spot a utility truck pull into the front entrance. I said to my friends, "Look." They all turned and gathered around me to look out the window, I swear I heard their jaws drop at the sight of the white pick up arriving at the compound. There was dead silence for a moment until I finally told them, "We have to leave. NOW." A moment later we're running through the office building into another section that leads to a loft, which has a ladder that takes you down to the factory floor and the back of the factory where you can exit without anyone seeing you on the main road (where this truck would have parked). I'm in front of everyone, one person close behind me, two of the other guys a bit further behind (I think they had to grab equipment). I was going down the ladder, and in my panicked state, misjudged how far down I had to climb. I fell at least a solid five or so feet, landing on my feet, but slipped in the dust and crashed down onto my side. I felt the initial pain, but thank God for adrenaline; I was able to get right back up and keep running. My friend behind me and I continue running through the factory to our POE. We have to stand around worriedly for the other two for a few moments (I knew the factory best out of all of them, this was my fourth or fifth time there and only their first or second). The other two eventually caught up with the equipment, and looking frazzled from frantically searching for the exit. We all get out and run to the car we had parked out back. A few weeks later we went back, no trouble that time around. We've gone there multiple times since then with no incidents, but now we have escape plans in case someone shows up again. Who knows, the guy might have been lost and just turning around, but of course no one wanted to take any chances.

...The good thing about exploring in southern Ontario is that there usually aren't balls of venomous snakes waiting for us. Stay safe - thank goodness for steel-toes..!!

Depends where you are. Plenty of Massassauga rattlers up in the Georgian Bay area. I nearly stepped on one a few summers ago while camping up there, if it hadn't have started making a racket I would have.

A few years back around midnight walking through a subway line still under construction. My plan was to walk to the next station and find a way out through there. As soon as we got to the ground floor I heard a radio playing and someone talking. Quietly retraced our steps to the main platform where a worker was waiting for us. He was directly in front of us by about a subway car length so clearly he saw us. I planned to admit defeat and just say we were looking for a bathroom and got (terribly) lost or something stupid like that. As we walked closer to him, though, he never acknowledged us in any way. I decided to just keep walking, passing by about three feet from him and he just kept looking down at his phone. Kept walking, hopped down onto the tracks and still nothing. We just walked off at a brisk pace back to our entrance expecting for security to be waiting but no one ever showed up. That remains a particularly surreal experience.

Another one that still makes me uncomfortable to think about. Trying with Steed to get into a mall which had its construction stalled for years. I squeezed through a tiny opening through boards covering a stairway that dropped about 2 or 3 very generous stories up. The plan was to find a way in and open a window or door on the main floor for him. Managed to climb some rusty janky steel sticking out of a pillar into what was probably going to be a vent system or something then into the basement. Everything was looking good and I climbed the stairs to the main floor. As soon as I stepped out of the stairway I was hit by a very new smell. A brief look around and I noticed a clean jacket hanging over a chair and various instant food items. Then I looked just to my right and there was a security guard sleeping right by where I was standing. I was back in the basement and struggling back over that pillar in about five seconds.

Haven't really been following this thread, but last month I had a pretty horrifying experience with a couple other members here. Two of us climbed up some terrible stairs to the top of some metal tanks, and on the way down I was about a floor behind the other guy. While he was still about 50 feet off the ground, I suddenly heard a loud crash followed by at least 10 seconds of falling debris. I looked down through the stairs to see the other guy clutching the railing with one foot on a step and another right through a hole. The third guy was waiting at the bottom and didn't know we were so far apart, so I don't think he saw both of us right away. No idea how we all kept our cool after that, but it was probably my most terrifying experience so far.

A couple of years ago, I went to Toronto to visit a friend (we will call him Jim). We both went to college together with another guy named Sean. Sean lives with his parents in a condo. Jim and I are still in touch, but we hadn't heard from Sean in a number of years.

Well, during this most recent trip to Toronto, I had the bright idea of trying to infiltrate the condo and spy on Sean to see what he has been up to. Jim wanted to join in for the fun because he was curious to see what Sean was up to as well.

We spent a couple of days planning how we were going to accomplish this. Since Jim was pretty new to the whole urbex thing, I made him my spotter. Using a set of Skymaster binoculars, his job was simply to watch all of my blind spots around the condo building from inside his car. I would be doing the scouting and infiltration. The car was going to be parked across the street in a really large parking lot for a bus station (~200-300 yards away). This took place at night, so no one else was around. I decided that it would be less conspicuous to keep in contact via cellphone/text (this is one key factor that kept us both from getting arrested that night). We also made a cover story where if someone were to approach Jim and question what he was doing, he would say that he is waiting to pick up a friend who was at a party (this is another key factor that kept us both out of jail). We also decided it would be prudent to dress nicer to look like we belong in the area. Before finally embarking on our adventure, Jim cleaned out his car and trunk of anything that we would not need.

So after getting to the parkade, I got out and went over to the condo building to begin my scouting. I spent an hour pacing around pretending that I was a resident standing outside arguing with someone over the phone. After an hour of scouting around, it seemed that following a car through the underground garage would be the best plan. This garage had a camera watching it from the top of the ramp. After checking it out a few times, I figured out what angle it was aimed at, and decided to take a shot at trying to walk along the side of the parking ramp. After watching a couple of cars go through already at this point, I estimated that a 8 second delay before the door started closing again. I was sweating like a rainfall at this point. I still wonder if I was completely out of the view of the camera. This is where all the fun started...

After watching another car go through the garage door, I slowly made my way to the garage door before it closed again. Just as I was about to cross to the other side of the door, my phone rang...I answered it...

Me: Jim..whats going on?

Jim: (sounding scared) Are you coming??? (An authoritative voice in the background said..."turn off your phone sir")

OHHH SHHIIIITTTT!!!!

When I heard that voice in the background, I felt my heart drop and my whole body go numb like I was about to go over the other side of the tallest point on a roller coaster. I knew immediately that it was a cop. So then I hung up and started running hell for leather back to the parking lot. Along the way, I went past a garbage can. I went back to the garbage, and threw away any notes I had taken while scouting.

When I got back to the car, there were six cop cars parked around Jim's car. Two cops were frisking Jim, two were searching his car, and one was looking through Jim's binoculars at the condo where I was at. I was worried if the cop was watching what I was doing on the other side. I was more worried about my friend getting arrested, and began thinking about giving myself up so my friend could go home. Then I thought,"these guys don't have anything on us, and we have nothing questionable in the car." So at that point, I decided to stick with the cover story and keep my mouth shut.

Jim and I stuck with our cover stories and ended up being let go. After asking one of the officers why my friend was being detained, the cop told me that a bus driver that frequently stops at the station went by four times in the course of an hour and saw that my friend had left his daytime running lights on.

After driving back to my friends apartment, we watched a marathon of movies and got drunk over a bottle of tequila. This was one of the most traumatic experiences that I have ever had in my life. Thinking back, if we carried radios and/or didn't get our cover story right and/or didn't dress like we belonged there, we would probably both be in jail right now.

What did I learn?

1) PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS!!!

2) Be very careful who you bring on an explore. Considering that this was my friend's first time doing this, he did WAYYY better than most people would under the circumstances. That said, I will never bring him on another explore and jeopardize our friendship like that again.

3) Trying to sneak into an active building with cameras isn't worth going to jail over. I think I will stick to other less risky explores from now on.

4) Planning, cover stories, and credibility props can go a LONG WAY to avoiding trouble.

LOL WAIT so you haven't heard from your friend Sean in a while, so you meticulously plan out an elaborate plot to spy on him at his condo by sneaking in to his building (which is generally incredibly easy to do) while your friend peers in the guy's windows with binoculars, all under the guise of "urban exploration"?? What was your plan, a battering ram to his front door? Did you try texting him first?

Yes...somewhere, sometime, in some state of wakefulness, I thought it was a good idea lol

"...Under the guise of urban exploration?"

Your right...more like a stakeout than an exploration.

"What was your plan, a battering ram to his front door? Did you try texting him first?"

lol Well, I wished that I did that after my friend got patted down. Before that, I thought...its too easy. Thanks for the battering ram idea. I'll do that next time XD

I was about to leave an abandoned farmhouse north of Denton Texas and was already in the driver's seat of my car when two cars came from the front and back and boxed me in. A man gets out of the truck behind me and I see a pistol in his right hand through my side view mirror. His finger is already on the trigger. "Oh shit," is exactly what I muttered at that moment. My window was open already, and I don't think he realized I already had seen his weapon. I don't know why, but I looked up at him and said, "What are you going to do? Shoot me?" Probably not the best response, but he seemed a bit startled at my sarcasm. He said something about kids coming out here and stealing his trailer equipment. I kept on my offensive, and explained the obvious: that I was an adult female, alone, driving a Camry hybrid, so did he actually think I was there to steal his trailers and was the pistol really necessary?
My feeling of "oh, shit" started to turn into anger. I got the impression he was just another idiot with a gun permit living in a castle law state that did not feel his life or his property had been threatened at all. I suspected he only did that to try to intimidate me and feel like a badass. Don't get me wrong, the gun was very effective. I just never let him know that.
He motioned for the car in front of mine to move. Once I was safely out of firing range, I realized how fucking scared it was - and angry.

I would think that the guy with the gun would have a hard time explaining to the police why he shot at an unarmed woman in a car who was leaving.

That's the part where "castle law" comes into play, which basically indemnifies a property owner when using lethal force. I'm citing from memory, but basically, in Texas, your home/property is your "castle," and you have the right to defend it with deadly force without fear of criminal pursuit. I do not believe Texas even has a duty to warn law. Some states have a castle law in place but have a duty to warn in place as well (you must warn the intruder of your lethal intent prior to shooting them). Obviously, there is a lot of grey area in this, and I'm not a lawyer... But, that's the idea.

I have had a few "oh shit" moments. One that comes to mind was when me and my girlfriend at the time were exploring KPPC. We were in the NYC/Long Island area for the weekend, about this time last year. I was determined to see the place out while I had the chance.

The plan was to check out from the hotel in the city, drive out to KPPC, explore for awhile, then head to West Islip to stay with friends for the night. Between traffic and getting lost we arrived with only around 2 hours of daylight left. After walking around a bit we found a good POE for the power building. Getting into building 93 proved to be a bit more difficult. Finally we found a half open window leading to the basement. The sun was going down soon and I was determined to watch that from the top floor. We immediately headed straight to the top. After finding access to the balcony type thing on the top we watched the sunset and enjoyed the view. It gets dark quick in February, so we decided it was time to get while the getting was good.

As we started heading back down I quickly realized that in my rush to get to the top I had paid little attention to what way we came, my girlfriend was of little help. Finally I found what I thought was the stairs we had used, only to get to the bottom and find the door outside sealed shut. It now began to dawn on my just how large this building was, and everything looked pretty much the same. Panic began to set in as I thought back on all the sealed up POEs we had encountered trying to get in. I realized I would have to find the room where we entered. After some searching and following arrows left by previous explorers I came across a room with large amounts of water leaking from the floor above. You could hear it before you saw it. I remembered passing this on the way in. From there I was able to find my way back to the POE We squeezed back through the window and got out of dodge.

Lessons learned:
Pay close attention to where you entered the building.
Don't rush through unfamiliar places.
Don't explore a unfamiliar location at dusk.

I had a minor "Oh Shit" moment last weekend. Coming into the location we saw a "Beware of Dog" sign but disregarded it. We were in a decent sized school and heard a dog, we checked it out and saw it was in a cage across the street. We headed back in and two of us were doing photos on second floor and my buddy had went looking around 3rd floor. I was setting up a shot when I heard a crashing sound followed by "Son of b****", I thought for sure he'd fallen down one of the giant open shafts in the floor. I ran towards the end of the building to see him getting up from the stairs, turns out they were covered in an inch of ice.

On top of that he said he heard a woman's voice upstairs then we headed towards the other end of the building and were met by a high pitch screech that sounded like a cassette tape when the tape comes out. We got out of there and found out the family that lives there 15-20 years ago had gotten up and left overnight. Kinda weird...
