| | | This plant used to be the largest ammunition factory in the world when it was built in the 1940s. By the time it was finally permanently closed in the 1990s, it was heavily polluted, just barely missing EPA super-fund status. Buildings were so polluted with explosives that demolition could only be safely done by burning the building down instead of knocking them down. This was done in large batches, burning down dozens and dozens of buildings over many acres simultaneously. As a result, the grounds are mostly empty and there is a hell of a lot of walking to do to get into the more interesting buildings from the large, barbed wire perimeter fence, except for some barracks by the road far from the main ground. It is now used for cattle grazing and is infested with ticks. There was a lot of walking and sun and misery both times I have gone, then trudging out in the dark, unable to see the goddamn cows mooing at me while waiting for the farmer to leave, wondering if any of them could be bulls. I don't know a lot about cows. I don't know Impfac but I suspect luck had nothing to do with it. I think urban explorers like him make their own luck, most of the time. Research, scouting, lots of miles, a keen eye, and some cleverness thrown in if that's luck then Ok.
| That is true. I plan and research in advance for most places-driving for 6-12 hours just to discover the place is demo'd, impossible to get in, etc, is really no fun. Sometimes I strike out anyway, but I had enough disappointment to start researching in advance, especially since I'm almost always alone. And the ticks, I was very familiar with the goddamn ticks after the first trip. Four the first time, 3 the second, with dozens more in my clothes. Screw you nature.
