Yesterday.

Went with a buddy of mine to explore a couple of buildings, having no idea that they were heritage buildings. We managed to make it through the first one, a BEAUTIFUL 4-storey farmhouse with tons of rooms, red wood ceilings, amazingly creepy...massive property.

We left to hit up an awesome abandoned church down the road,

And returned about an hour later to walk up a trail near the first heritage building, to see if there was a home there. Jackpot! Massive old farmhouse and barn (and sweet little camper!) We walked around the perimeter, there didn't appear to be a way in and there were wires running to (security cameras?) - we aren't ones to break in so we left everything alone, obviously. We explored the super cool abandoned camper - walked about twenty minutes to a huge barn and were inside scoping out an awesome boat when we hear "HELLO!? HELLO!?" from outside.

My friend and I were like...oh shit. We just walked out all innocently and didn't see anyone, so at this point I was genuinely hoping that it had been a ghost and I would have an awesome ghost story to tell people, but then a guy in a yellow security jacket walked out from behind some trees and we did a whole "Hello, Sir we are but young photographers" thing and it worked. It's really the truth, anywho. He had already called the police because apparently we had activated a basement window alarm and it had looked like a break-in so he told us that we looked innocent enough and to book it fast before the cops arrived.

We left very quickly.

For your viewing pleasure:

A praying mantis that was guarding the front door of the abandoned church

The view inside the church window

A neat little camper on the heritage property. (Heritage camper?)

In September of '05 my best friend, his girlfriend, her cousin, and I decided to go to a cave in the middle of the night at a local national park. The "cave" is less of a cave and more of a rift where two bluffs come together at this valley creek bed. So we spend about 20 minutes going over the rocks and it really only gets difficult when you get to the lat 200 feet or so. We come to about a 10ft sheer wall that has a crack in it that you have to crab shuffle up. So I go first and wait at the top. So when the cousin comes up she puts her hands on the top lips of the walls and pulls herself up. The she says "omg i just put my hand on something that moved." I turn my light on about the time that a fairly sizable copperhead is striking the front of my luckily steel toed boot. This all happened in a matter of seconds. My friend had a hiking pole with him so he immediately kills this snake that we had pissed off so badly. From there we walk back to the collapsed part of the cave where the roof gets really low it was a straight walk so we figured we might as well. So I get close to the roof and there's a crack in the ceiling and I see something weird that I think is roots at first (because I hadn't already learned my lesson) and I shine my light on it as I get just a couple feet away. It takes me a second but I realize that what I'm looking at it a ball of freaking copperheads. So we gtfo in a pretty big hurry.

...The good thing about exploring in southern Ontario is that there usually aren't balls of venomous snakes waiting for us. Stay safe - thank goodness for steel-toes..!!

I just avoid open caves like that during the summer now.

Closest I've gotten is having had an exploration of a place I go by regularly, and I strongly considered going to the second floor of the main building. I was scared off by some hissing at the building, and I couldn't tell what kind of creature was hissing at me and how dangerous it was.

Three days later the building collapsed.

Didn't mean to stop here. Last time we hiked in in the dark a long way to reach this destination.

This time, on the way to somewhere else, we drove by, saw the guard shack was unattended so we parked nearby and ended up walking around the gate, past the shack and down the main road to the buildings.

We were photographing a well boarded one when I thought I may have heard gravel crunching under a tire. Signal partner and leaving my downed bag, rotated my body slowly around the building corner to hidden safety. While doing so I saw the whole side of the lightbarred patrol vehicle pass by.

Area was never drive patroled before that I know of. Pulled up Google maps, found out where that road he was heading down lead and that it looped back to us putting our now hidden wall side exposed. Moved sides, patrol passed by and he headed back up the hill. Moved on to main target building and checked map again to figure out patrol's whole route. Inside the building I counted the minutes between tire/gravel crunches to be around 15min. We spent a while photo'ing.

Ready to leave now but the patrol vehicle is back at the guard shack. While discussing new options for walking far off into the snowy desert to get off property, patrol leaves and drives by. Spent the next 15min booking it back down the road, passed the shack and on to freedom. Saw the patrol coming back down the hill once back at the car.

I was exploring an abandoned movie theater a few months ago when I had a run-in.

I had just got finished making a nice panorama from the stage when I started hearing voices tat were awfully close by.

I started listening and realized whoever it was, was talking about ME.

"Did he come out yet? Did you see him go in there?"

This is when I heard the police radios...

At this point I start to shit myself, just a tad, trying to figure out my course of action, do I hide? Do I come right out?

Then I hear them say.."Maybe we should send the dogs in?"

...Oh shit

At this point, it was clear that hiding in the building was probably not a good idea, so I announced my presence loudly and started to exit the theater, equipped with my respirator, and tripod in hand.

The cops were pretty alarmed when I came out (probably because of the respirator and the face I was carrying the tripod) and yelled to show my hands.

They sat me down and we chatted for a bit, turns out the neighbor can't mind his own damn business and called the fuzz on me, they asked what I was doing in there and didn't really understand the whole "I like to take photos of stuff like this" concept. After a bit, they were nice enough to let me off with a warning..

Really glad they didn't send any dogs in after me..

Here is the panorama I got to make before running into them:
https://www.flickr...tostream/lightbox/

Damn, how long ago was that? I know someone else who got stopped by the cops there. They were waiting at the door when they came out. Didn't realize they'd have the dog w/ him as well. Was it the neighbor, or maybe the parking lot attendant?

The one time I was there, I wasn't there very long, but there was a cop car screaming up the street when I was walking away. (of course, it could be going anywhere in that city)

On one of my last "Farewell trips" to Candycorn this past summer, I'm walking through the lobby with my buddy Bill and I hear a dog barking. Bill says he heard nothing but I know what I heard and that is not a place people go to walk their dogs. So we run up the nearest stairwell to the top floor and look out over the front parking lot. What I see is this: two black minivans parked at the front door with three or four guys standing around them talking on walkie talkies. Off to the right are two unmarked crown vics with two cops in those plain black cop outfits (don't know what they're called) and each of them has a dog. Directly below my window is a marked Explorer with K-9 on the roof. Couldn't see the side to know who it belonged to but didn't really care anyway. Out by the street I can see that the front gate is open (it wasn't ten minutes ago when we went in) half a dozen cars are parked in the driveway and people all over the place. WTF ! I'm still pissed at myself for not having the foresight to stick my camera in the window to get a quick pic before we ran because that's something you just don't see everyday.

I'm thinking if they were there to find us they'd already be inside, but it's obvious to me that they are definitely preparing to come inside. We were about as far from the poe as you can get . . . .
Bill: What are we gonna do?
Me: I don't know what you're gonna do, but I'm gonna run like hell. You might want to follow me but if you fall down, I'm not going back for you.
So we get out the back and up onto the old rail spur where I find a nice big tree and sit down behind it for a rest. After a minute I leaned out from behind the tree for a look at the hospital and there's the two cops with the dogs walking down the driveway beside the building towards the powerhouse, in plain sight of the door we just exited from. A couple minutes later and it would have gotten real ugly.

Still don't know what was going on there that day, maybe some sort of training exercise, maybe the owners were having the building checked for squatters? drugs? bodies? I dunno but it made for an interesting day.

I've heard of various departments training dogs in abandoned buildings. If they brought that much force and didn't go in after you, they probably didn't know you were there.

I've had so many of these moments I can't even remember them all, but they're actually a big part of why I do this. What other "hobby" can literally scare the living crap out of you !!

This past summer I got an email from a girl who saw some of my pictures on the internet and wanted me to get her into an old building. Fine by me but she won't tell me where until we meet. That can't be good but over coffee she tells me she used to work for the DOC at Bridgewater State Hospital and during her training period they took her into the old SECC building in the Bridgewater complex. The largest correctional complex in the state. I'm thinking she's out of her freaking mind, but it is a cool old building so I'll entertain the thought for a bit. Not sure how long ago it was closed but it's been awhile since it was used because a lot of the building is so old it doesn't even have running water, but the DOC and local police departments still use it for training. We made a date to head over there and check it out. I parked the car and we walked around a bit, keeping to the side of the building farthest from the active facilities of course, out of sight of the guardtowers. No one really bothered us, we waved to a few people driving by. In my book, walk in like you own the place is a perfectly valid recon technique. Worst that usually happens is you get thrown out and afterwards you know exactly who you're dealing with and how serious they are about keeping you out.

There's a vehicle parked on the walkway to the front door of the main building and the lights are on inside. Not a good sign, but we walk around back and the vehicle trap (sallyport?) is wide open, both gates. Can't see into the courtyard because it's around a corner, but I'm going in. She does the smart thing and hides in an open garage around the corner. No open doors in the sallyport so I head into he courtyard which has a dozen or so cars parked there, some marked cruisers, mostly personal looking vehicles, but no one seems to be around at the moment. I walk down the nearest wall as inconspicuously as possible trying door handles. A handle turns !! The door opens !! Score !!

Loud voice from behind me: Freeze asshole !!
Me under my breath: Awww f*** me
Loud voice: Put your hands over your head and walk backwards toward the sound of my voice!! Do it NOW !!
Me: Sombitch . . . . !
Loud voice: Stop there and lay face down on the ground with your hands behind your head.

Next thing I know I'm cuffed and it feels like someone is sitting on my back with a handful of my hair playfully rubbing my face in the asphalt. I'm pretty sure I laid there about an hour while the voices argued about what to do with the terrorist they just caught. Finally I'm allowed to sit up on the ground and face my captors, while they start fighting over my gear. There's quite a few DOC, some local pd, and a state trooper. All in uniform and geared up for battle. They're all firing questions at me so fast I can't even answer them all. They're still arguing over who gets to arrest me when the trooper picks me up and shoves me into the back seat of his cruiser. None of the wannabes said a word to him as he packed up my cameras, wallet and phone, got in the car and drove off. A quarter mile down the back driveway he pulls over and lets me out. He's obviously dealt with my kind before and gives me the usual lecture about how stupid I am and how lucky I was that he was there to save me from the wannabes who would have taken me inside and used me for target practice. I thank him for his understanding, he was actually pretty cool about the whole thing. He asks me how I got there and I tell him my car is parked in the main lot across from where we were. He tells me to go get it and stop there on my way out and he'll give me my stuff back. He also mentions that if I can't do that without getting caught again, I'm on my own and he'll just leave my shit at his barracks and I can pick it up after I make bail. No problem, I got this. He still has my phone, so I can only hope my friend didn't leave in my car when she saw me taken away by the cop, but she was sitting in the car when I got there. I told her to lay on the floor in the back and I collected my stuff on the way out and thanked my new best friend one last time. He made it crystal clear that if I was caught on that property again I'd have a serious problem on my hands, but I'm pretty sure I'll be back there someday.

About a year or so ago a friend and I were exploring an abandoned nursing home in my hometown. It's situated comfortably between a busy ramp for the interstate and a McDonald's; took nearly an hour to hike around from behind through a wooded area. Once we were in, I took some good shots and everything was going swimmingly... for about an hour or so, that is.

There are two buildings - the main one is two stories (plus basement) and in relatively good shape for having been abandoned roughly eight years. This building has an 'L' shape with the bottom part of the 'L' facing the main road and the driveway for the facility running back along the right side. Extending behind said building is building #2, mainly being one story plus basement but due to a hill towards the very back the main floor is as high off the ground as the second story of the first building (this becomes important later). Building number two has a serious mold problem and the ceiling in the main hallway has collapsed exposing a large amount of insulation and dust. Lacking respirators we spent no more than five minutes in this building.

As I said, it was uneventful for about an hour. Then I noticed something, a vehicle in the driveway that previously wasn't there. That's about when we both almost emptied our bowels into our pants - it was the local fire chief's pickup truck. We rushed to another window for a better view and saw two fire trucks pulling in as well as a police cruiser sitting near the entrance to the driveway.

At this point we both hightailed it out of the first building and through the second; exiting where we came in would have put us right next to an ambulance that joined the conga line of emergency vehicles. Using nothing but the collars of our shirts for air protection we ran through the second building like the devil himself were behind us. Turns out the exit at the far back - our escape route - was conveniently blocked off by collapsed ceiling, something we had overlooked earlier. In a panic, we go into one of the rooms, force a window open and jump out. We didn't realize how high up said windows was and I strained my ankle on the way down plus lost my pack of cigarettes, but looking back on it that's much better than running into the fire chief or any firefighters, paramedics, or police officers who decided that day was a perfect day for a training exercise.

We ran briskly limped to the neighboring McDonald's, passing a second ambulance parked in it's lot. I'm sure we looked suspicious carrying camera gear and clearly coming from the nursing home but the paramedics didn't seem too concerned. Ended the adventure by enjoying some frappes and discussing our daring escape.

Sometime soon I'll finally process and upload the pictures from that day, I just can't seem to find the SD card I used. Moved twice since then and haven't seen it

Earlier this year, we checked out an abandoned slaughterhouse near my home town. We gained entry through a barely accessible window, and I was first through. The place was magnificent, with much of the old machinery rusting above. I was scanning the area with my light, about to give the all clear, when I heard rustling and clanging above. I saw a filthy, pale hand reaching down from the ceiling, trying to pull whoever was attached over for a better view. I hauled ass. My girlfriend was in the window about to jump down when she saw my face and looked up. She also hauled ass.

It's pretty bizarre-I have no idea who would be desperate enough to sleep in the decrepit ceiling of an old slaughterhouse, but definitely not someone I want to deal with. Turned out my memory card was 45 minutes away, anyway, so I would have experienced a very different sort of "oh shit" even if we had stayed. I plan on going back whenever I muster the desire to drive 1600 miles to see my family.

Had a minor one yesterday when we had finished exploring an awesome manor house.

We were headed around the back to take some shots of the rear of the building but unknown to us lot, the groundsman who looks after the site lives in a house positioned to the rear of the property facing the lawn. As soon as we stepped foot on the stone steps leading down to the lawn his trio of Boxer dogs spot us and start barking hysterically which of course roused him from whatever crappy daytime TV show he was watching and he proceeded to start yelling at us from his wooden terrace, telling us to clear off etc, so we walked back round the front to get away. Through all this one of our lot was on the phone to a friend trying to ascertain where the swimming pool was on site so he lagged behind a little as we walked off. Three of us were heading towards the exit when we hear the screech of brakes behind us as the groundsman comes to a stop in his van between us and our mate and starts shouting etc, luckily after a minute or so he was able to calm him down after we were called various things including 'parasites trespassing on private land' yadda yadda yadda.

The irony is the person he was on the phone to knows the groundsman and has shot the place many times previous with permission!

Never had anything as crazy as some of these stories, but my moment would have been driving to a location about 2 hours away each way, only to get there and be completely intimidated. Essentially it was way more dark and expansive than I had expected. When I got to a good POE, I thought to myself "there's no frickin' way I'm going in there!" After a bit more external exploring I got in the motions of it and it was probably the best exploration I've ever done. But after 2 long hours of winding roads, to think it was all for nothing was a bit of an 'oh shit'.....

First explore, closed jail in Tampa, FL; myself and then-bf were headed into one of the pods and, despite not having power, the heavy door was able to lock behind us. None of the others there that day (one of whom had been several times) had found a key yet and we just KNEW it was going to be a call the local police/fire dept for a rescue type situation. We joked (when we finally got out) that had we needed "real" rescuing they would've said "oh really? You're so hot to check out a closed jail how about checking out the active one?" The sound of that door locking...EXACTLY how you would imagine it.

A number of explores later, a re-purposed church turned conf. center in Gainesville, FL; headed down a short stairwell from a baptismal pool to the 2nd floor (heavily water-damaged) I stepped from the last step onto said 2nd floor and my foot just kept on going. Right through the floor all the way to my hip. Thank God (harharhar) the whole floor didn't give way...would've been a short but likely injurious fall down to the ground floor.

Some time later...took yokes and another explorer out to a phosphate plant in the-middle-of-nowhere, central FL; parked my vehicle across the street (really the only place to park) and once we were inside on an upper floor looked out a big hole in the wall to see local law enforcement parked near my car. We left out the back and fought our way through the woods to pop out on the road some ways away (just some photogs taking pix of trees and shit) but by the time we made it back to the car the cop was gone.

Even later...abandoned amusement park in Orlando, FL; a night explore and we had jumped the fence/gate and had been ducking security all night when down a path we see the headlights of sec's 4-wheeler coming our way around a bend. With nowhere to hide we ducked down near a small outcropping of the fence (where it made a little square alongside the pathway. As security rolled by we were close enough to have reached out and touched him, crouched down in full view, but....50/50 chance....he looked left vice right and rolled right past.

Most recently, a few of us were at the local place with the sweet autopsy suite (here in DC area) and felt we had been pushing our luck as local law enforcement had been sitting on the campus for a couple of hours w/o talking to us (despite our walking full view to my vehicle and away from the vehicle back onto the grounds with our camera gear). We tried the front door of one last building and it was wide open. We went inside and after checking it all out (relatively nondescript) we were back near the front door POE when we heard something just outside the bldg near the back (sounded like a rusty gate). We paused and all looked at one another like "did you hear that?!?!"...after a few seconds we heard what HAD to have been radio chatter coming from the same area so we hauled ass out the front door and decided to tempt fate no longer.

Just a few oh shit moments so far; likely many more to come

I learned today that sometimes, if a set of double doors appears locked, you can open one of them by pulling hard on the handle so that both of them open a bit. Also, the reason that they're unlocked is probably because there's an employee of the building inside them, and he might just be headed right for those doors you just pulled open, dumbass.
