Great Aunt's (Allegedly) Haunted House

Background: Growing up, my family would visit my great aunt in southern Mississippi every year. She lives in an town full of lazy oaks trees and old plantation homes. It was a nice change of scenery, but had a terrible downside. My great aunt informed us when we were very young that her house was haunted. And not my a single ghost, but by numerous ghosts; we are talking around seven or eight here. To make things creepier, she called them her 'friends' and she had nicknames for all of them: the old lady, the stomper, the breather, etc. I don't really believe in ghosts, but I will say I've never felt comfortable in that house. It's the type of place that makes the hair on your arm stand on end when you enter.

Roughly four years ago my great aunt passed away and the house was put on the market and sold. I happened to swing by the town last year on my roadtrip and decided to swing by the home. Driving up, I could tell nobody was living in it. For some reason, I was drawn to the house and decided I could not leave without trying to explore it. I was able to lift a window and gain entry and it was terrifying, even as an adult, even in daylight. Following are the pictures of the experience, with some captioning:

1.

3.

4. There used to be a still life painting of snakes and birds in a tree on the wall above the fireplace. My aunt used to tell us that the painting would come alive at night and the snakes would eat the birds. I'll never understand why she told us this stuff.

5.

6. So, because of all the scary things my aunt told us, I became paranoid in this house. I used to thing monsters/ghosts lived in the pantry closet in the bathroom and that the holes in the door were breathing holes. I was always afraid I would see eyes watching me through the holes. Again, creepy house y'all.

7. So I thought the second door from the right was the door to the closet. I wanted to see if maybe something from my childhood was left behind. But when I opened the door it turned out to be the door to the attic: the one room I never dared enter as a child.

8. This is the view I got of the attic. I was freaked out at first, but then noticed something on the walls of the stairway.

9. The walls ended up being covered with drawings my sister and I made when we were really little. When I saw them, all these memories from my childhood came flooding back. It was a super trippy experience. And I never would have experienced it had I not picked the wrong door to open. Here is some sort of a car.

11. Brown Car

12. House and Flowers

This was a really great experience for me because I was able to relive experiences and memories from my childhood. I still did not feel fully comfortable while in the house, but I think that was just because my aunt conditioned me that way. Also, who knew I used to be a decent artist, at least for a kid. Hope you guys enjoy; sorry for the extended commentary!

Nice shots! The house looks as new. Ghosts are usually old=fashioned and afraid of freaky stuff. Next time shout: Im here by the power of Overlord Lucifer and you will bend over to worship the great black goat whore... it always works

What an amazing story! I've always wondered what it'd be like to explore a place from my childhood that had since become abandoned. I can totally see why you were creeped out--especially if your aunt told you those things. Sounds like she was quite a character! And I do believe in ghosts. ;)

IndoAnomaly, maybe your aunt told you these things so that you would grow up god-fearing / respectful of the afterlife? Or maybe she just wanted to terrify the living hell out of you, lol. Either way there must have been a purpose behind it

It was certainly a unique experience because I already had memories of the place I was exploring. Oh, she was a total character. When we visited in the summers, she would take us to the old cemeteries in town and tell us how everyone died. Hahaha.

I'm sure she had a purpose. Maybe it was to foster a vivid imagination in us children. But really, I think she just did it to entertain herself and to get a reaction out of us.
