no way it was just one person. the graffs are too different.

I'd be interested in pics, I don't think I'll be going there anytime soon

I took a quick look at the Halls of Wonders, I also have another location located in Oak bay as well. I haven't been in yet in the first location although I'm thinking it will be mid October. The first location is very covered. Easily accessible of course. I also have a few other locations downtown which I want to explore.

Anyone interested? I have plenty of accessible tools from my work to do the deeds. Tac, take some pictures before these beauties are officially covered ! you are our eyes!

Checked out the tunnel near Ross Bay today. went down both directions - one way was made of brick and the other seemed to be made of marble. we followed the brick tunnel until the drop, and decided not to risk getting stuck without proper gear, so we went the other direction and found the marble tunnel.

No sign of the supposed pentagram down there (no satanists or UFOs either) - I'm guessing it's just past the drop in the brick tunnel?

anyways here are some pics

6:00 am.. My Buddy and I from the dam went on another exploration this time below the streets. There is no need to explain where we are in these pics as for we all know exactly where this is. We started at the smaller Tunnel first before we ended with the main location.

The second location was awesome as for we went in and it wasn't raining at the time. Half way through we noticed that the water level started increasing pretty quickly as there was a sudden down poor ( call it lack of experience ) we should of checked the weather that morning.

I'm not sure how many other people are aware of the upper-upper section which is completely separated from the main Tunnel. From the maps this other Tunnel appears to be about 4-5 kms long. I took some pictures of the main entrance which is about 4-5 feet high. The water levels are around 2-3 feet at beginning I believe, Rain season as we all know. Thoughts anyone?

Hey I'm brand new here. I actually read this entire thread. I would love to go out exploring or just learn from some of you about all these tunnels some time. This thread has kickstarted the local historian in me. Thanks for all your pictures and comments. There's so much, but some of it is just amazing. Some real brave folks. Cheers.

Went on a few little expeditions quite recently and discovered the entrance to the Hall of Wonders, easy find. Also I have determined Tanukis bay st drain is most certainly follows almost the exact route of the old Harris Pond drainage creek. As for downtown, the city has done a very thorough job of sealing any openings that could be considered easy to access. It would appear they've blocked off anything that could be used as an entry point unless there's some drains that connect and one is willing to try that game. I just noticed they tore down the old gasworks building during the rock bay remediation so that's gone forever. Perhaps they'll tear down the one with the smoke stack too, apparently the ground underneath is severely contaminated with bitumen. It would seem for now that unless someone knows of some very secret basement entry points the tunnels are probably going to all be closed in and back filled forever. Some of the reason for this is simply progress and some of it was done to discourage the homeless, but it also makes sense that in the post 911 world and under the direction of federal and provincial governments a directive was carried out to seal any possible entry points to tunnels that could lead to the parliament. Now that anyone who protests or is homeless is considered a possible terrorist by our fascist government. The tunnels will now most like only be discovered by archeologists many years from now. That said I happen to know SNC lavalin has a secret office in an underground janitors room near one of the well known downtown pubs. I was strictly warned not to explore any further as the tunnels are "protected by the same poeple who protect Christy Clarke. There's still something nefarious going on in this city though these days it appears the government is the one controlling the underground rather than smugglers or homeless people or satanists. Of course the government could be full of them;). More sleuthing soon.

One more tidbit. There was a rumour posted on this page about there being a tunnel from the union club to the strathcona where men could go back and forth cheating on their wives with prostitutes but the dates are all wrong. At the time when this was supposed to have happened neither the Strath nor the current union club had been constructed. The union club used to be on the corner of Courtney and Douglas which would've made more sense for the tunnel but once again the strath was not even built till 1911. The original location of the Union club was at the corner of Yates and Government which would correspond entirely with the concept of the previously mentioned tunnel system under old downtown and it was most likely in this location leading to one of the hotels in existence at the time on government or Yates nearby, perhaps the one that eventually became Steamers pub and is now a clothing store. It was once known as the old Northern Hotel. As a side note, in Bastion square the old Burnes building was once a hotel and when the owner, Tommy Burnes starting experiencing financial difficulties he began to let rooms by the hour to the delight of politicians and city officials who liked to have a nooner without the missus finding out. Boom!

finally got the nerve to delurk...been watching this thread for a year or so now. hi!

so...just checked out the hall of wonders with a buddy. now either you all have been holding out or i'm about to spill a secret?

there's an art series covering the walls. its like a museum or something...idk? is it new? we snapped pics, but i don't want to ruin the fun for others. here's a pic from near the end...anyone else been there lately?

Now I'm going to have to look through all these boards again, but I'm pretty sure I remember reading a UER thread in the past month or so where someone was trying to organize the creation of this art series. Do the paintings and plaques seem to be related to the creation of the world, or the beginnings of life, and are they in a sort of sequential order? If so, yeah, they were probably organized somewhere on this site by UER members. It sounded like an excellent idea, but also seemed like it would be a very difficult project to pull off. I guess they must have accomplished it!

Good day all,

It appears that there has been some recent activity on here, well I have some pics which I have never posted of the Darkie. The first couple of pics were by myself when I went for the first time.

The second pics Sid and Hack joined me which was cool to meet them both, I am very interested about how far the wooden Tunnel goes as for Sid has been informed that it goes all the way to downtown.

I'm up for the trip although it would be pretty back breaking for sure. We also have some interesting ideas for the spring when the water levels are a bit lower.

Well enjoy and I could be up for a halls of wonders run if anyone is interested.

Cheerio

Agreed. Dodgy dates. That aside, the old retired city worker I spoke with some 7-8 years ago told me straight-faced that he was INSIDE a tunnel that went from Union to the Strath.

It could well be true and I've been in the green room for the bands at the nightclub under the Strath before which seems to be part of a tunnel that is closed off

Sorry if I am over posting with newbie enthusiasm but I had to share this little story. Today I took my kid to play at his friend's house. The father and I are both tradesmen so we talk shop, shoot the shit and are roughly the same age so have a lot of similar memories of growing up in this city. We both have been off work over the holidays basically because its just dead slow this time of year. He tells me he's been reading some fiction and asks if I've been reading anything so I say I've been looking into local history and it has been really fascinating. Without missing a beat he says "did you find out about the tunnels?" Now I'm serious here when I say I have never ever discussed this with the man ever before. My ears piqued, I say "Oh I've heard a bit about them," to which he says "yeah I used to go in them all the time, me and my friends, about 20 years ago when we were kids." This by the way, pre dates the exploration accounts of kubla, a lien, peterman and others here by about 10 years. I continue with "I heard there's some that are supposed to be under china town." And he says "Oh, they are all over. I've been in one that went under Johnson St and Broad and in the drains and did you know there's even ones under Ross Bay?" "No Way." "Yeah, we got in one night and after crawling through one that's about 4 feet high we entered this giant circular room with all sorts of crazy occult images on the walls and old candles and red paint and its really big when you get in there. There were bones coming through some of the walls." I pause him, considering a pic I saw on this thread "you sure that wasn't just old rebar?" "Maybe, we were young and kinda scared by that point."
We continue our discussion remarking on our appreciation for the skill it takes to brick a round archway, no less a rounded drain into a larger circle, this is some serious time and skilled labour that went into the construction of these things. He finishes by telling me "we were kind of scared about someone finding us there or getting locked in, so we go back out and the security guard is waiting there for us. He's really weird and creepy and won't make eye contact when he tells us to get the hell out of there. I went back and tried to find that entry point we had a bunch of times but never could, it was like it disappeared." We talked a bit more and I say what I've heard without divulging exactly where I read it but I was kind of blown away to learn of his adventures. I can think of no reason why this man would have any reason to lie to me. He's shared stories about getting arrested in Seattle at the G7 or 8 (I can't remember which is the correct #) summit for being an anarchist and other misadventures of his youth but imagine my surprise when I get this out of him just by saying local history. Turns out he and his gang of friends were doing this kind of thing way back in the late 80's, early 90's when they were teens. We left it there and I went home. But I am fascinated by the description he gave of the dome like brick cavern with several semi circular brick drains leading to it. I know brickees take a lot of flack for being crackers mostly on job sites these days but that kind of brick work takes skill, and lots and lots of labour. I'd be willing to bet most of the old brick and stone drains were probably made by chinese hands, probably not by choice but that's just a hunch.

Ok, so obviously I'm way late to the party on this thread but hey, I just never noticed it before ok? Anyway, I've been doing a lot of reading and it seems there is a story about a tunnel under every street where street cars used to go, literally each one. Anyone else have any observations about this? And the BCER manholes line all these streets. They look pretty heavy. Perhaps the tunnels were service corridors for the streetcars? I'm just noticing a real consistent pattern of streets where streetcars used to operate and stories about tunnels that run directly under those streets that aren't drains or storage spaces with purple glass. Anybody lifted a BCER manhole and peered inside?

This story is very interesting and pretty cool. The location is in Paris, France. The only thing which I don't understand is why these retards are showing their faces lol, especially the girl who is almost posing for the camera. They're just asking to get caught!

Never the less, the pictures are amazing!!!

3:00 am, Saturday morning, HackTheRipper and I are on another adventure, this time we decided to hit the location where our past loved ones lay to rest.

From the draining maps that I have been studying for hours online, we were under the impression that this storm drain would of been larger than the rest of the storm drains due to the fact that it was highlighted very brightly compared the standard colour chosen for the drains which were in a darker green and classified under the same category.

We popped the manhole and 2 inches below the lid we saw that it was pretty clear that it was covered up. I wonder if this is the same Tunnel that Ninjaklutz stated was his favourite and was now burned, Anyways. 8 manholes later we finally found a wicked 16 + foot ladder which started our voyage,

Enjoy!1.
