****LONG STORY AHEAD!!
Being somewhat new to Urban Exploration, here is my closest case to getting caught.

Earlier this week a buddy of mine says he found an abandoned/boarded up building in an industrial part of town. A couple nights later me, w0nka, and a couple other friends decide to check it out...
We come to find out that the building is in a horrible location, right in between other facilities that seem to have people working all hours of the night; and we don't have the slightest incling on a POE.
The building itself has a fence about 20 feet behind it, about 7 feet tall, expanding the length of the building. Behind this is what looks to be some sort of water runoff with a small dropoff leading to about 10 feet of woods/foliage then condo yards and houses.
We decide that walking right up to the front of the building with no coverage whatsover besides a biffy, would be a poor idea. So, we park in the neighborhood behind the building at the bottom of the wooded area to the side of the houses; galavant through a slightly larger wooded area than the one between the houses and the fence and arrive at the back of the fence. We watch as an employee of an adjacent building about 100 feet away walks out the side door of the business to his car and leaves; then we make our move to the back of the building. Being careful, we check all around and come to see some motion sensor lights above us, under the inside of the roof where a loading dock had apparently been. As we cautiously make our way to the opposite side of the building that the employee prior would have been in plain sight of, we find coverage in the only hidden area other than behind the building... The biffy.
After checking every possible board and door that we find (with no luck) w0nka decides to go to the front of the building; which even in the dead of night is pretty well lit up by the surrounding companies. After a few minutes of not hearing from him we see an employee about a half block away leaving a building adjacent to the front of the building we are pursuing. I'm sure he has a clear view of w0nka and a fair view of the biffy that the rest of us are hiding behind. As he comes to the street, he makes a stop like any law abiding citizen would; except he sits there for what seems to be the LONGEST probably 3 minutes of my life. He finally decides to depart in the direction of our building, passes about 30 feet in front of w0nka in plain sight, and then he TURNS AROUND. To our amazement, he continues past and leaves the development.
At this point the three of us hiding decide to take cover behind the fence, while w0nka pokes around a bit more. So I run to sit behind the fence with only one of the other two following me. He stops at the edge without my knowledge and I continue to the midway point of the fence with some foliage cover. I can see lights about 20 feet behind me, through some foliage, on a house; except one of these lights is moving. All of a sudden I hear a man yell while shining his flashlight in my vicinity, "Hey! Is anybody there?!" As I simultaneously lay in what I later find out to be itchweed, and poop my pants, I hear a woman. " Come here, want a treat? Good boy! " she says. After realizing that this wasn't some weird fetish/roleplaying game she had with her husband; her dog and husband follow her inside and they turn the lights off. I wait a few minutes and and then run to my buddies who are between the fence and the building. After w0nka says he had no luck we decide to run to the street in front of the building and make a long round about walk to my car.
Later I asked what happened when the car passed w0nka in front of the building. Apparently he laid flat on the ground directly in front of the building and didn't doubt that the driver saw him.
Annnnnnddd, I didn't actually poop my pants. Sorry folks.

Night time. Ok almost back to my vehicle near the gates. Aw man my back tire is going flat. Crap the mosquitoes are back at it. Stop get off bike, get spray out of pack. Wait, WTF, why is there a light back there behind me? Oh it's definitely moving, gotta be a vehicle. Shit shit shit. Pick up bike try to minimize foot prints, cross ditch to bush for cover. Lay bike down behind it so reflectors don't show, crouch down. Ok it's about to pass, wait why hasn't it passed? It turned! It turned right near the bush! It's ok it's headed away. Wait, no no no, it's turning around, headlights are almost on me. Jump on top of bike to keep from reflecting, spread flat. Why are the headlights so close now, oh man they are coming right at the bush! How are they not seeing me? Headlights dim, they are turning again, finally away down the fence row. I get back to road, need to close distance and get across gates. Wait they are coming back now. I go to the other side of the road's bushes. Ok they pass. They are headed back out into the desert. They turn a few more times then head out a new way. I bike again. Crap they are parked near my vehicle, what are they doing? Ok they get on main road and leave.

After the second hiding, I get the picture that they are most likely out there like me, only lost trying to get out through the maze of fences and gates in a lit up vehicle instead of incognitoing in on a bike. Now I'm wishing I had popped up and scared them instead.

I was messing about with lights and suddenly I felt a rush of wind and a sound like the world was ending, then came the water.

I backed out slowly while the water hit my waders and the spray soaked me

Oh, DUDE. That is terrifying. That's one that I keep thinking of when I'm draining, that urban legend of the explorers who went in a drain and it flooded and they were never heard from again. That's like the scariest thought that runs through my head. Well, that and loss of O2. Or Sulphur Dioxide. Or those tiny crawlspaces getting tinier and tinier until you turn into one of those noodly things in Gyo (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Amigara+Fault). Or crackheads. Okay, it's not really the top fear, but it's up there on a very long list. :p

Man, I have been enjoying this thread way too much. I'll need to set aside some time and try to contribute my measly stories soon.

Alone, early in my UE career, I got lost in a huge complicated building. For some reason the central part communicates with the north and south wings only by stairs. The wings are divided into many sub wings whose lobbies look identical. And there are lots of stairwells everywhere. I lost track of which stairs I'd used going in. I tried to return to my POE by crossing the first floor and the room just wasn't there. I remembered going up and then down, so I tried that. But I'd forgotten the sequence of stairwells; the POE room still wasn't there.

I could see trees and sunlight outside thru the windows, but I couldn't get there. This was agonizing. The doors were boarded up, and the fire exits too. I was full of adrenalin, and considering breaking a window or calling 911 and getting arrested for my pains when I remembered that the first stairwell had black rubber covered steps. The stairs I'd been using had marble steps. So I hunted around and found it and was a free man. But I couldn't sleep that night.

Having a partner is good. We returned to that building, and I learned the maze and put that fear to rest.

So I've been exploring with a buddy for about a few months now, but it wasn't until sometime around August that I realized something weird.

We were in this giant building, which I wont release details on, and we're up on maybe the 7th floor, and I suddenly get this feeling of "somebody's watching me" and I force him to shut up. I heard what I thought was footsteps, but he didn't hear it.
About 10 minutes later, we're on the top floor of said building and looking down an elevator shaft. And this time we both hear, very clearly, two distinct voices talking to each other below us.
Now, we know it's not the cops or security because I had looked out the window a few moments earlier and we'd heard no sirens. These voices only last for a short exchange before it goes silent again.
So we continue on assuming it's just some other explorers.
Now for the rest of this we don't hear anything else so we assume whoever it was just left. (And hopefully they did, because if we could hear them clearly from up there they weren't wearing respirators, and this place is an asbestos-fest)
Until we get back to out POE, which happened to be in a pith-black room and required us to walk about 80 feet from the stairwell to it.
But as soon as we step in there we both get an intense feeling of "Someone else is here, you need to get out now, something is wrong" and against out better judgement, we just start hiking it through the darkness, trying to keep our flashlights on the floor while not damaging our cameras.
(Now, usually our rule is to not dart off or get stupid in an abandonment in case we miss a hole or something and end up getting hurt, but I wasn't going to argue in this situation because it felt like we were being chased)
The unlucky part here is that I'm incredibly short and needed a rope climb out. Considering that we were both starting to panic, he just throws the rope, not caring if it's secure or not, I grab it and start climbing up, and he suddenly just shoves me up to the POE, through a broken window, and I sort of glance back down at him before climbing back up to the open, but not before rolling through some broken glass. (Which only got caught in my jacket, I didn't get hurt or anything)

So he quickly grabs his rope and climbs up after me, and while we're standing outside the POE taking off our gear(we had to walk a few blocks through one of the busiest streets in the city to get to our car and didn't want to do that in respirators) I notice that he's feeling for something in his back pocket. And as we were walking back I fell behind him for a few seconds just to see if he had nicked anything from the building and, well...

Turns out this guy's been carrying a handgun to every abandonment I've taken him to.

Not much of an "Oh Shit" story, but we were pretty damn convinced someone was going to get us in there.

When you are light painting in a building at night and you hear a car engine so you open the front door and peek out just in time to see a police officer walking towards you. Never packed up my camera and ran through the pitch black so fast. After we got out back to my truck which was parked behind the building we did a drive by. 2 cruisers and a k9 unit. With officers circling the building. Made it out just in time.

As four of us were leaving a grain elevator through a window facing the street, two cop cars turned their sirens on, came around the corner of the building and went right by us and went around the other corner of the building. We ran across the street into some bushes and scoped out the area for five or ten minutes and they never came back. I guess they had more to worry about than us at the time. Others had far worse, but as a relatively new explorer, it is pretty darn scary.

A few days ago I was filming at an abandoned golf course. It was just a few small buildings so I was driving around the area to see if I missed any. I was driving around the roads course members used to use. Apparently the property has been purchased by a farmer as all the open fields are now crops. I didn't realize this until driving around further.

I'm getting ready to pull out of the golf course and I see a UTV fly around the corner on the street coming towards me. I immediately assumed it was the pissed off property owner. However I was already in my car so i just took off down the road knowing his vehicle would never catch me, and it didn't. However if I would have waited 20 more seconds to leave he would have probably cut me off and gave me an earfull.

We were exploring a semi abandoned mine. We found an alternate exit and wound up in the very active industrialized facility. We turned around to head back through the exit. The door was locked from our side.

"Oh shit."

Full on stealth mode activate. We sneak low and fast since the area was well lit. We hear a loud "HEY!".

"Oh shit. Oh shit."

We break into a sprint up a hill and away from the facility. As soon as I get to the top I see a German Shepherd (I immediately assume K-9 unit)sniffing around 100' down the other side of the hill.

"Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit!"

I turn around and stop the rest of my party. We watch the dog linger for a minute then run the other way. We break for the woods away from all the action.

A minor oh shit moment but last Saturday we got to a new rooftop at night - I wanted to look over the edge straight down (which scares me regardless) and when I put my hands on the lip of the building got a jolt of electricity from a live wire. It sucked but was funny.

It was some kind of device to keep pidgeons away.

One time, in Sullivan County, NY, I went out in a group with three other explorers and shot this cool old run down camp. We had to have been out in the open for a total of a half an hour in between buildings when we heard a guy on an ATV circling the property looking for us. We went out and greeted him because we had already gotten "permission" so to speak, from a sweet old lady living next door. It turns out he was the property owner and her son, but he was a rude son of a bitch the whole time demanding we delete our pictures (which we didn't) and leave (which we did!) To make matters worse, he got in his truck when we were pulling away and followed us roughly five miles until I pulled over at a shopping center and our group parted ways. Not really sure what he was thinking on that one, but we didn't stick around to find out!

Another time, at a Dutchess County, NY location, me and a bud were out with a bottle of Evan Williams shooting the shit and wandering the property. Most of the day had been good so we were a little too relaxed and we ended up catching security rolling around a corner just in time to jump in a patch of vines behind a bush. Dude rolled right by us as we're kissing the dirty ground and then turned directly in view of us before moving on.

Another time, famously.. at the same location as the above story, I was on a solo exploration of mostly the outside of the property and I had wandered in between wings of the building. I started to hear radio chatter echoing off the walls of the wings and I froze in place. I peeked my head out past one of the wing's shadows so I could see what all the commotion was and sure enough.. worst fears x10 confirmed: a row of police cars, police men, and K9s all lined up on the main drive. Stuck, with nowhere to go and nothing to really lose... and certainly not wanting to go back *in* a building in that situation, I made a fast pace in the direction they weren't and I walked back to the path in the woods to get myself out. Noteably, on the way out, I saw two guys in navy blue uniforms like the rest of the squad out in the woods near the benches with the barrels. I looked at them, they looked at me, and I kept on walking and they kept on talking!

It was probably the biggest "Oh SHIT!" moment I had other than the time I was a few joints in and three beers deep when I went sack first into a floor joist on the top floor, only to look below and not see two more floors beneath me.

Yet I keep on going to these shitty abandonments lol. Some things will never change!

I decided I would check out a place called *COUGH* that was guarded. Temptation was high, so I just went for it.

After watching security sit around forever doing nothing, I slowly became aware of the fact that they were inept. This was done late at night and the plan was to infiltrate during the wee hours of the morning after a proper investigation at night.

During an hour of paranoid drudgery and ridiculous uphill exersise, I found a POE that matched my expectations perfectly.

The next morning I went inside there, and after an hour of peaceful exploring, it became obvious that I tripped motion detectors, because, as I was chilling out on the top floor, snapping away panoramas from the frost-covered windows, I suddenly see this pickup truck roll in to view a mile away, kinda slow like he is looking for something.

Next thing I know, he is doing laps around the building I am inside of, like he's a schizophrenic shark or something, fast.. slow, then slow... fast, always switching directions.

I am haunted for an hour by the gravel crunching under his tires as he circles relentlessly. I look for hiding spots, just in case he comes in to the building. But that never happens.

Finally, he drives past very slowly and seems to stop. I am still scared at this point, but because of all the commotion, and the belief that he won't bother entering the building, I don't expect much.

I peek through the window to see what's going on, through the little hole in the frost I have scraped away with my debit card and see:

PISTOL IN MY FACE

Yes,
The next thing I see appears to be this guy already knowing where I am peeking through the window, and he's in the "weaver stance" apparently about to pull the trigger.

So I slowly duck out of the way and quietly freak out.

The fact that he somehow knew exactly where I was inside the building is what really disturbs me. I mean, he didn't just know what floor I was on, he knew what window I was already looking out of.

I just had another close call last night with some farmers. There is farmland near my house that was bought out by a large farming company, leaving a few houses abandoned in the fields. Generally they are working during the day so we go at night to explore. In this case we went at around 11:00 pm.

So we drove down the long dirt road, past all the machines and farming equipment and we decide to go to the furthest house first, down more dirt roads through fields. We explore about 3/4ths of the house when I hear loud noises in the distance. I walked out onto the balcony and see multiple farming machines starting up and lights going on. Shit. So I tell everyone to turn off their lights and get to the car. We now have to drive down the long dirt roads, only big enough for one car, through active farm lands. The only way out is to pass by the now active machines. So for as long as I could I drove down the roads with no lights on to avoid them seeing me, sticking my head out of my sunroof to see.

If any of the farmers saw me, they could easily block my only path out. I finally pulled up the the running farming machines, saw nobody around, turned on my car's lights and sped away down the final road to freedom. I figured I'd made it away when we saw another car heading down the small road right toward us, presumably another farmer coming to work. I expected to be told off for trespassing but luckily it was so dark he could not distinguish me from another vehicle actually meant to be there. He pulled off the road to allow me to pass by. As I drove by I flashed my lights to say thanks and he flashed his back at me.

Never knowing we were not meant to be there haha.

Hate to post twice in a row but came across another interesting thing today.

I was walking the perimeter of a house. This house had a balcony a story up that went around one side to the back porch. Was was walking on the balcony to the back when I saw 2 wasps flying around the corner, not just passing by, they were constantly landing. While I'm not afraid of a random wasp, something inside told me don't take that path to the back.

So instead I walked around the other side. Once I got around back I came across this directly around the corner i was about to walk by.

The nest would have only been half a foot away from my face and while you can't see many in the picture, all the wasps (15-20) were quite agitated I was taking pictures of the nest.

If I would have turned the corner they would have probably came after me until i fell off the balcony lol.

I've never really had a moment where I seriously thought I was about to be caught or was in imminent danger, but this story is still decent fodder for the thread.

A couple years ago, my friend and I were exploring a HUGE train shed (Mass people, you know the place) on a hot and humid summer day. On the way in, we spoke to a couple of workers who didn't seem to mind us taking pictures, but warned us not to go inside.

We were up in the records storage area, which was a metal grate platform suspended just below the roof, when we hear a car engine outside. We freeze and listen, and a white van drives into the building, casual as can be, and parks right below our position. So there we are, sitting in ball stew and freshly shat bricks on the top floor of abandoned building on a ninety-degree day, listening to these dudes take the longest lunch break in recorded history.

Two geologic eras later, they pack up and leave, letting us take our sweet time shooting the rest of the building without hassle. Anticlimactic, yes, but there it is.

I was exploring an abandoned movie theater a few months ago when I had a run-in.

I had just got finished making a nice panorama from the stage when I started hearing voices tat were awfully close by.

I started listening and realized whoever it was, was talking about ME.

"Did he come out yet? Did you see him go in there?"

This is when I heard the police radios...

At this point I start to shit myself, just a tad, trying to figure out my course of action, do I hide? Do I come right out?

Then I hear them say.."Maybe we should send the dogs in?"

...Oh shit

At this point, it was clear that hiding in the building was probably not a good idea, so I announced my presence loudly and started to exit the theater, equipped with my respirator, and tripod in hand.

The cops were pretty alarmed when I came out (probably because of the respirator and the face I was carrying the tripod) and yelled to show my hands.

They sat me down and we chatted for a bit, turns out the neighbor can't mind his own damn business and called the fuzz on me, they asked what I was doing in there and didn't really understand the whole "I like to take photos of stuff like this" concept. After a bit, they were nice enough to let me off with a warning..

Really glad they didn't send any dogs in after me..

Here is the panorama I got to make before running into them:

I remember way back in middle school, the cops brought in their K9 unit for a demonstration drug search and take down. The whole thing was really just a scare tactic put on by the school to discourage running from the cops, but damn, I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of those dogs.

I'd hate to see how long it would be before you could use your arm again if they did perform a take down. Glad to hear that you managed to talk your way out of the situation.
