I found a gas mask lying around, ill attach a picture

its a willson model T01
it says it protects from 'organic vapors'

Is this of any use? (what is considered organic vapors?)

will it protect me from evil asbestos?

There are a few parts to answer to give you the full picture... First, was this just found on a factory floor or in a closet or was the filter still factory packaged? If it was still in the original package and isnt quite a few years old then the filtering agents should still be able to provide protection. If it has been opened (maybe not even used) and laying around then the filter is probably already "loaded" and can not provide protection anymore.

So, if they are still fresh cartridges then they are what I would consider a good one to use in general UE. They will filter particulate, asbestos, and you will be getting rid of organic vapor and mists. Should hold you over in most of the places one would see.

Thanks for all the help.

Well the mask was given to me 3 years ago and has done nothing but sit in my closet. To be on the safe side I feel I should buy new filters. Where can I buy those?

Home Depot, Sears, any hardware store really. Just be sure that they fit your mask before you buy them

That's a really nice write up, Samurai. My dad is a mechanical engineer and works for Packaging Corporation of America and gave me a tour of the plant a year or so ago and basically explained the same process you did. I believe he used to work at one of the International Paper plants and another one which I can't remember the name of.

Thanks for the info! I was always worried that my half mask was not enough to stop asbestos but now I know as long as I keep the cartridges fresh I'll be fine. Much appreciated!

Organic vapor means nothing for asbestos. Asbestos is a particulate which requires a P100 rated filter, the highest rating. Charcoal filters only catch organic gas such as chlorine, mustard gas, tear gas, etc (Not that a half mask would save you fully for the last two but your lungs would be fine). The last main type of filter is an acid gas filter which you will likely never need unless you are doing some crazy chemistry. 3M makes combo P100/Charcoal, P100/AcidGas, P100, and every combo.

To sum up, anything will work as long as it has a P100 filter in it.

Any specific make/model recommendations for a good mid-range model similar to that suggested in the initial post?

3M is a reasonably priced manufacturer and available at any supply store. There are also a lot of filters that are made to work with them so they arent hard to match. I would suggest pricing them near you and see if they are in your limits.

A newbie to exploring places with particulates in the air, so excuse my lack of knowledge, but could someone possibly tell me what half-mask / filters I should use for an old hospital built in the earlier 1900's that is definitely rife with asbestos?
Please and thank you!

If you are looking to filter out asbestos, a P100 filter on a 3M half-mask will do you just fine.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the info in this thread. It goes a long way towards answering some of my questions, but I do still have a few more.

A.) Will a bog-standard 3M mask accept both the soft circular filters and hard plastic cartridges, or just the former?

B.) I've been scouting a former fertilizer mixing plant for a while, and I was wondering if there would be any specific chemical hazards associated with such a site that I should watch out for.

Thanks in advance. I love when people can pool their collective knowledge in threads like this.

This is what I use personally and I highly recommend getting something close to it. I have bad asthma and allergies, but when wearing it I don't have any chest tightness (typically for me it comes from inhaling mold and dust) p100 pink and a 3m half face mask
However I have fallen out of the urbexing scene and it hasn't gotten much use besides grass mowing and chemical warfare against wasps. I reaaaally need to get back to having fun1.

Apparently that DID just happen. And I AM proud of it

A. They should pretty much all advertise "bayonet" attachment points which are usable with almost all of 3M's filters and cartridges (which will also specify that they use bayonet attachments).

Totally unqualified to guess about the fertilizer plant.
