I got locked in at a dog park once after exploring past closing time and I had to call the head maintenance guy of the city to come and unlock the gate on his friday night. I was legally parked just arrived a few minutes too late, so there was no problem it was just awkward. Thats the worst that's ever happened so far.

I went to an abandoned school where the back doors were chained shut but unlatched, meaning you could pull them open to the full extent of the chain. I'm thin as a stick and figured I'd give a proper chance to squeezing underneath and between the two doors. I do it and even with my body, it's a tough squeeze in but seemingly worth it from what I could already see halfway wedged in the door. I finally get all the way up to my hip through the door when I paused for a moment - and then I heard it.

Very softly, coming from the front area of the building up a flight of stairs, a very fast series of beeps was going off. I nope-d my body back out the door as fast as I possibly could have, as the police station is only a few miles down the highway, and scraped myself really bad on my way out. I got in my car and was out pretty fast, luckily this is in the middle of a fairly densely populated area and I parked my car at a CVS kitty-corner to the front lot of the school and just waited. I didn't see anything for maybe 15 minutes so just for fun I decided to drive on the residential road that runs behind the building. At the back door of the school, there were 3 police cruisers and a Chevy Suburban parked. One cop and a guy in plain clothes were standing at the door while a couple more walked down the hallway into the school.

I actually ended up gaining one-time legal access to the school through the town's director of town structures. It made me very glad I didn't try to hide on the inside, because if those police were to do even a half-assed sweep, there would have been no place for me to hide. It was built with big, open classrooms and no nooks, crannies, or closet doors.

during a recent explore, found this floating in the bottom of a silo, remember, there is NO movement in those things, nothing to cause anything to group together- there was also a slight rotting smell- i just backed out and ignored it- its well sealed, so no animals got in and fell-

This one isn't really urbex but it is trespassing and a run in with security and cops.

When I was a senior in college, us and our rival university nearby would hold nighttime beer miles where track and cross country runners from each school would compete. "We have a key to the track, so we'll do it there! There's never been a problem in the past."

Once we finish we start cleaning up a bit and carrying the large garbage bin towards the entrance when we see all our friends booking it the other way. There were about 50 people there. The fences around the athletic fields are 10 ft tall with one gate at the main entrance, where 'security' was starting to run through after us. My friends and I ran to the far corner and scaled the fence AND brought the garbage bin with us (we respect the property we trespass on) and jump down the other side.

My friend and I sit next to an abandoned house right adjacent to the track and take off our running spikes. A police car drives by and the guy does a double take seeing our white shirts against the wooded background. He calls it in and our friends are nabbed (they decided they would walk on the main street right outside the track). My friend and I turn and run towards the woods knowing that, if you just keep going through them you'll eventually hit a neighborhood. Just then, a quad with a spotlight comes roaring up and starts panning the abandoned house and the edge of the woods.

We did the thing all kids do when you're little playing hide n seek. We stood like pencils behind tree trunks and as the quad progressed down the path, we scooted around the trunk to stay out of sight. About 5 seconds later, my friend lost all hope and abandoned me and started full out running through the dry leaves and sticks in the woods, hopping a rusty fence and disappearing into the neighborhood. Now the quad freaks out and doubles back. I decide to lay flat near a downed tree and get him to make another unsuccessful pass. Now here I am, probably covered in poison ivy, at a school where my only connection and guide had just ran away. Shieeeet.

I got up, and slowly and calmly walked towards the rusty fence, hopped it, scurried through some back yards, and finally hit the main roads.

Only problem was my car was parked at the track. Terrified, I went back. Nope, security and police had all left.

2 a.m. Sneaking around the Albert P. Brewer Developmental Center with two friends that had not been before. There is a main complex of classrooms, kitchens and offices; surrounding that are the dorms about 100 feet away. We heard what sounded like 20-25 people in the main complex so we stuck to sneaking around the dorms. About 15 minutes in, I look up and in the trees I see the running lights of a Ford Crown Victoria. While trying to decide whether I should lead them back out or just stay out of sight I hear footsteps 5-6 ft away around the corner of the building we were crouched against. I then hear something get kicked and a bucket rolls around the corner and stops at my feet. My decision was made for me as we threw caution to the wind and darted through the dorms then sprinted across the open field and over the fence.

Turns out the crew we heard in there main complex was a gang and the cops were in the trees ready to bust everyone.

I signaled with my flashlight to my whereabouts. That and the fancy fake company magnets I have on the car doors must have done the trick and he left.

What type of official magnets do you use? Where can I get some? And does anyone else have any great ideas on how to explain/legitimize a car being spotted?

Let me get this straight. You see motion sensors, know you're caught, so you stay and take pictures of them?

I invented a company, logo, and vague description and then printed them (it's what I do).

Try the hood cracked open and a half full gallon of water near it if you have to leave the vehicle parked.

At the Dever State School on one of my first geared up all day explorations. We arrived early on a Friday and got onto the grounds no problem. While we're walking through the woods, we hear construction taking place somewhere relatively close by. As we approach the "L" buildings, we see that there is, in fact, active construction/demolition taking place on one part of the campus. We figure that the buildings with no abatement sheets hanging are probably okay, so we enter. We also know that there is some tunnel access. We get in, are doing our thing and are enjoying the experience while being mindful of the construction. We end up going through the tunnels and ended up in one of the facilities building near the edge of campus, realizing as we get to the second floor that there are people right outside and are driving around. At one point, I have to push my friend up against a wall because we were about to get noticed. We decide that our personal liberty is probably more important, so we re-enter the tunnels and figure we'll head back to building #1 and leave.

We get back under the building that we had initially entered through, and we start hearing these noises. At first, we reason that it's a bird, so we continue cautiously for a few more minutes. As we approach the area that connected the tunnel to the basement, we start hearing loud construction equipment and voices coming from directly above us. We reason to try continuing forward to the next building in hopes that it provides a safer exit, down a part of the tunnel we had not yet explored. We reach a turn in the tunnel and there's an abatement sheet with a hole sliced in it blocking our way. We climb through and then through another sheet, only to find ourselves in the basement of the recreation center, with electricity running and active abatement going on. We turn around, re-enter the tunnel again, at this point sprinting as quickly as possible, and making a shitload of noise on grates and puddles and what have you. Finally, we pass building 1 and continue down to one of the other connected L buildings where we hadn't heard noises. We climb the stairs and go up to the second floor to survey around us. We see a white SUV driving slowly around the building, but it's on the far side from the exit facing the woods. We decide we gotta go. We make it to the door, take a quick look, and sprint the 30 yards to the tree line, with respirators still on. Sprinting in a respirator fucking sucks.

We finally made it to the woods and off the property without further incident.

TL, DR: A comedy of errors resulting in a respirator sprint. Sprinting in a respirator sucks.

So uh, there was this one time I was on a roof, and it was the first hot day of the year and I suppose it melted some of the tar, which I did not realize until I had already sat in it.
Bad enough it ruined my clothes, but it also went through them. And made it entirely impossible to walk back home without everyone staring at me which is one of the most unnerving things when you're already paranoid about someone catching you somewhere you're not supposed to be.

A much less severe "oh shit!" than some others, but it's just not something I ever even considered being in the scope of bad things that could happen while exploring haha.

A few years ago myself and a few other explorers had an 'interesting' 'oh shit' moment.

We had made our way through quietly onto a site and into an old residential school through the simplest of ways - a window with no glass or board. Inside for an hour or so taking pics as you do when suddenly we heard hammering. Quietly making our way back to a window overlooking our POE I spy the security bloke, hammering a board onto our POE. With no other ways in or out.... we started to get concerned.

luckily while he was hammering away, we had to 'make' a door open on the other side of the building and run like hell

I was recently at a Training School in Connecticut and we had been in a building that we gained access to via a very easy open window at porch level. We walked through, got our pics and finished up in that building, moving on to the next about 40 feet away. While we're in the attic of the next building, we observe a white pickup with Facilities and Maintenance on the side driving around. We decided to duck out in case they were coming into the building, some of them seemed to be used for storage by the University that this place belongs to. So we get out of our PoE which is a semi-obstructed fire escape and begin decent. We look over as we are coming down to see that white pickup has parked directly in front of the building we'd just been in, about 25 feet from us, and the guy is nailing a board onto the window we'd used. We slip around the side of the building and count our lucky stars that we'd gotten out 15 minutes earlier.

TL;DR - We almost got nailed into a building but we didn't because we're lucky.

My boyfriend and I had been going to this hospital which had been abandoned for about 4-5 years and have been there numerous times so no thoughts of ever getting caught since we never have even an animal there. We're walking through the woods, just had approached the far side entrance area and BAM giant red chevy barreling towards us and the guy gets out and threatens to call the cops but he didn't so close call i guess. It turns out he was running the project to tear the poor place down ):

Another time at this school where it had been abandoned for over 10 years at the time, the doors were all chained up so there we were with some chain cutters in hand and this woman pops up out of no where so after i seriously just about pee everywhere she just wanted to go in also.

One of my very first explores was an old manor house which had been converted into a school, the place looked to all intents and purposes like it was still open - no fences, nothing boarded up, the lawns and gardens still mown and looked after and the grounds still used - but it had been closed for about a year previous. Me and my companion got in through a door with the handle/lock missing at the far end of the building and set about doing our thing. We were in an old caretakers room which rather worryingly had a cupboard filled with large knives/machetes, large saws, half-full cans of petrol and diesel and full face masks with creepy expressions on them when we heard a car pull up outside and the doors open, slam shut and the boot open, accompanied by dogs barking...

Bricking ourselves a little we emerged into the corridor and I heard a key turn in a lock at the end of the hallway, our response was to leg it upstairs and hide in some shower cubicles while listening to the sound of people walking around and dogs barking downstairs. Realising we'd be trapped if they came upstairs we decided to get as far across the upstairs as we could before heading down hoping we'd be away from them and able to escape. We went down the grand main staircase but only then realised the people are between us and our original entrance route so wander around a little, on edge, and reach the old canteen. I reach up to grab the handle of a door and just as I make contact with the handle a shitload of barking erupts from right behind the door, bricking it massively we legged it through to the front rooms of the old house and spot a tiny door set into one of the big bay windows, mercifully it was unlocked so my mate flung it open and we legged it across the patio, leapt over a wall onto the lawn and ran like hell all the way back to the car...to date it's the biggest adrenaline rush I've ever had while exploring.

It later transpired that the school was regularly used for police dog training exercises....

Read through this whole thread now, some properly scary moments from you guys and girls!

Couple more while they're on my mind...

Few months back exploring a huge cotton mill that has been abandoned for about 20 years now, it's one of the 'old school' UK industrial sites as it's been around so long, it's trashed to hell, had a few fires and shows the two decades of abandonment badly. Anyway it was a weekday afternoon and we roll up outside it, park up and first realise there are a pair of contractors working on some street lights just across from the building. Walking straight past them we make our way to the entry point and clamber in, heading straight up to the top floor first - the views were awesome and all seemed fine initially. After a half hour or so we were on the floor below and suddenly hear commotion from somewhere below us, banging and crashing etc - this mill is in a dodgy area of a generally dodgy city so we were on edge naturally - it stops and a few minutes later my mate looks outside towards another building on site and says to me 'that's smoke!', I dismiss it thinking it was just wind blowing dust up but I watch it for a few minutes and the 'smoke' grows and becomes darker, and the horrifying realisation dawns on me that someone has set fire to the building while we are inside at the very top! I immediately turned to my mate and say 'fucking RUN' (because we know it also looks dodgy if we are seen around a fire currently going on), we cane it down the stairs and out a window on the ground floor and run back to the hole in the fence we got in by, and once out on the street my companion called the fire service...they turned up a few minutes later and did their thing.

Unsurprisingly I didn't stop to get photos of the fire, here is a phone photo of the fire service though about to make entry...

Second one...in Belgium a couple of years ago I had this (now demolished) power plant on my list to see for ages so we rock up at about 8am and make our way across the railway line at the back towards the fence, my mate vaults the fence and I do too a few paces further on. Issue number one - those few paces had taken me past another internal fence which split the two sides of the site so we were now separated from each other. Issue two - about 20 metres to my left were about five or six workers cutting up the large pipe I had just clambered down off. I look at them and wave (nervously...) and one waves back...but they make no effort to kick me out...so I climb over the internal fence and join my mate. We see as much as we could with workers on site and decide to leave, getting as far away from them as possible before climbing the fence again. My mate vaults it and I follow but on the top as I throw myself over the sleeve of my jacket catches one of the spikes on the top and twists my whole body round, smashing me into the other side of the fence before dropping me onto the ground - I ended up with damaged ribs and a large bruise on my wrist where the spike had hit it but mercifully not split the skin, and a big hole in my jacket!

Dude, not cool. We neither condone nor even discuss breaking and entering on this forum.

As for you, mookster, you are kickass! Those were some great stories!

Now, my turn!

My buddy Red and I went to a local gem, the abandoned tar paper factory complex. Two city blocks of cavernous, pitch black, wild fun. I was giving him the grand tour, Red having never explored a building before, and I aimed to lead him to the roof for the grand finale. Each building is connected by a series of open bridges over the overgrown alleyways between them. We had gone up the only stairs I'm really familiar with (packaging center), and had crossed a bridge to the main building to look at the laboratory. As we walked, I heard a sound unlike any sound I had ever heard in a building like this. It was the ring collect sound from the Sonic games. It echoed through every hallway and down every stone wall, breaking the sound barrier in its brilliance. I loudly scolded poor Red, who had turned positively white, for leaving his phone on high.

"PLEASE TURN OFF ALL BEEPERS, PAGERS AND CELL PHONES!"

It was probably the scolding and not the ringtone that caused the next sound. A metal screw being kicked across the floor, and hurried footsteps below us. We both froze, and nonverbally agreed to book it. Red ran toward the bridge, and I followed. He froze halfway across. On a promenade below us stood a man. An older man, mid fifties, with a scruffy grey beard and a light blue baseball cap. In his large, intimidating arms, he held a box filled with wire and pipe, no doubt scrapped from the harder to reach places in the factory. He looked up at us with black eyes, wide yet squinted in a fearsome grimace.

"YOU KIDS ARE IN A LOT OF TROUBLE," he growled threateningly.

So, we turned to a full sprint toward the staircase. He ran in the same direction. I grabbed Red by the arm when we reached the bottom, and we ran into the darkness of the main floor. After many twists and turns, to cut a long and suspenseful story short, we got out of the building and into the courtyard, running toward out exit back to the streets. Suddenly, I hear a yelp and see Red running even faster ahead of me.

"SHIT, JOHNNY, RUN!"

I turned my head over my shoulder. Here comes Scrappy Doo, with a knife. I never looked back again.

So, we made it out. I won't be going back for a long while, that's for damn sure.
