If you think someone has good "resources" for you (ahem), maybe get to know them a little, spend some time talking to them, find common ground first. Don't just hit them with the question right out of the damn gate.

I understand what you are saying, but you left me with a really sour taste of this webstie in my mouth. So a big fuck you to all of you who chastized me

It's been almost a year, way too long to be butthurt about getting a bit of chaff for committing a faux pas on this site.

Asking for locations is asking a very huge favour, and if your attitude is to just give us "a big fuck you" then the general response will be "Good thing we didn't help that kid."

I totally didn't get it at first but I guess I understand now. Still it takes so long to become a full member and I have so much trouble finding people to hit spots with here in Indianapolis that I felt a little discouraged by this at first. I suppose I'll just have to save up gas and drive around. I just wish I had more friends who did this sort of thing.

Local friends seem to always be an issue. Honestly all of the places I have found have been either through a trusted friend or scouring google maps. It helps to have a general idea of what the area has. (Industrial areas / warehousing / business districts are pretty good as some become abandoned, letting you roam somewhat freely.) It's not always necessary to drive around, but if you are looking for things to find on your own, expect to invest the time either driving or mapping online.

And yes... get a friend, establish dialogue & trust. Some of the best places I have been are from someone I never met.
Then; pay it forward.

Happy hunting out there.

This is not a new rule with spot seekers, not at all, for years now my friends and I have been searching for empty swimming pools to skateboard in and the last thing we would do is tell anyone of our secret finds, ha! I guess theirs some similarity with this rule and my example. Although this thread is a few years old, only the names change with breaking this format. Rules be rules son!

Thanks for the heads up!

I've been exploring for awhile so I already have a bunch of marked locations I've found and know just how much research goes into finding them. Someday I do wish to become a full member but I have no problems continuing to find my own locations until everyone gets to know me!

Now THAT is the attitude we are looking for in a member. Be sure to post your pics in the appropriate regional forums (leaving out location names and specific locations) and you will be on your way to a FM very quickly.

Why thank you! The encouraging words mean a lot! I'll definitely be posting pictures from my adventures.

I do have a question though. How do you guys feel about Youtube videos here. I have a channel where I post videos from exploring and have quite a few made. I'd be glad to post not only pictures but videos from my explorations if you guys don't mind links.

They are welcomed! There is a section called "UE Videos" that you can post on or feel free to in any regional forum. Just be sure that you dont give away location names or specific location addresses. Direct links arent as useful in this forum because there is already coding in place to show the youtube videos in your post. You can embed the videos by typing
[youtube=XXX]
or
[vimeo=XXX]

The XXX is everything that comes after the "=" in the youtube/vimeo URL.

Examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
or
http://vimeo.com/87963817

Edited for vimeo coding and spelling

Well, I think that the police have bigger and better things to do than get us in trouble for exploring.

Anyway, when you get down to it, this site is about Urban Exploring, not Urban Tourism. Magellan would not have been a very great explorer if he was following a GPS to some coordinates he downloaded of the internet. So... go explore something. Show us something we haven't seen before, and you'll be on the road to fame and riches in no time.

this.

good words for an inexperienced person like me - i remember shooting a location i'd been DYING to get to, and i was so busy chasing things i'd seen, rather than looking at the magic right next to me.

reading one of the tutorials regarding finding thing was SO helpful. i'm obsessing over these amazing locations like neverland, while i'm driving by abandoned things down dirt roads every and not stopping.

that's changing

I love this post a ton and it's well written for people who are new to Urban Ex. or even some people who aren't so new but have been doing it on their own for a while and just found the group.

If you are new to UE (as I am), a quick google or yahoo search can find you some pretty cool places. I started with "Abandoned buildings in Texas" and all kinds of things pulled up. Good luck and post those pictures!

Also may want to look on your local city webpage - they have to post public notices for review before acting on a demo or improvement of a property.

Google maps is how I have found like 75% of the spots I have been to. I personally hate it when People tell other random explores about places or simply drive up to a place to meet with others and expect to be guided to a handful of spots. I recently went exploring with somebody that I have been with now about five to seven times and she just this last time invited people from Seattle to go to this spot with us. This couple stole four items from the site which I believed was super lame. Also each person that you invite to a spot in this age of everybody photographer, you can't control what the others that you invite to go with you will share on the internet. This is dangerous because the more pictures that are posted of a place by different individuals the easier others will be able to put the photos together and figure out where the spot is located.

It's a bit of a catch, really. While I agree that the more photographed a location is, the more likely it is to be discovered by non-UE folks, what is the alternative? You can't exactly tell people 'NO', in terms of them taking photos. The best you can do is not take them with you, or in this case, pass that along to the other person.

Is there a good way to ask for a location or tell if someone is more likely to share their findings than others?
