I had one of these the other day, when I saw a motion sensor in a building, went to see if I could find the main alarm panel, though I found it and it looked like it has been disabled, so I went to find the stairs out of the basement, but first pulled out my phone with the scanner app and heard that the cops were in rout to the building I was in, needless to say I got the hell out of there

When I was seventeen, some friends and I went on an extremely poorly planned excursion to a rather famous state hospital outside of Philadelphia. Our group was far too large, we had a single cheap flashlight, and none of us had the slightest idea about the layout of the campus. Think of everything that you shouldn't do during an explore. Fast forward to the part where we find ourselves in the pitch black tunnels beneath the campus. The one holding the flashlight is next to me. We look behind us and there's another flashlight bobbing in the distance. Frantically we start to run down the damp corridor, somehow not slicing ourselves open on the rusty furniture that cluttered the hallway. We ducked into an alcove off the side of the corridor that housed what appeared to be backup generators of some kind. We hid behind those for a few minutes, not knowing what to do. Someone discovered a staircase at the back of the room that we stormed up as fast as we could. We find ourselves in the dietary wing, completely boarded up save for one window with about a fifteen foot drop on the other side. That's when whoever was following us started screaming "Who the fuck are you?" "What the fuck are you doing here?" Frantically we yell back "We're leaving, we're leaving." and they yell back "No you fucking aren't." Seventeen year old me nearly soiled himself. Four guys jumped out the window, the three remaining, which included myself, stayed and waited for whoever was charging down the hallway. Barging through the doorway comes some Brock Lesner looking guy and a scrawny but loud guy, who finally identify themselves as security guards. They escort us out of the place and detain us until the police arrived. Another guy was waiting outside and caught the ones who jumped out of the window. They asked us questions which we dodged until the real cops showed up. Surprisingly enough the actual police seemed annoyed more with the security guards than they were with us, and told us we didn't need to answer any of their questions. It wasn't until after we were apprehended that the Brock Lesner looking fellow identifies himself as the owner of the property, and tells us that Ghost Adventures is trying to film a segment on this place and we rudely interrupted it. The only slightly positive part of all this nonsense is that we actually met one of the guys from Ghost Adventures.

Moral of the story seems to be this: When I was a teenager, I was very dumb.

Which guy was it? Zak, Aaron, Nick? And what did he say?

We were in a semi-abandoned mine the other day, a massive limestone mine that went back into a hill several miles. It had old equipment and other things inside that made exploring it very interesting from a historical perspective. The entrance was easy enough to access, other explorers had even encountered scrappers in the area not long before so we know it was fairly easy to get inside.

The entrance was huge, large enough to bring vehicles, so a small convoy of us drove inside the mine to see what we could see. We drove several hundred meters back and parked our cars off to the side of the main road near a doorway we found in a wall. We decided to go through this doorway and explore further. We found old articles of paper and reports, old written records and documents for the mine that had been left there in boxes on the ground. We wandered around for about an hour and a half, walking ever-deeper into the mine when we all heard this low, faint noise. We stopped and listened. It was a low hum, not like a car engine but it sounded like some sort of air-compressor or something. As we walked the sound got every so slightly louder, and as we were trying to guess what it might be in a (mostly) abandoned mine on a weekend, late at night, suddenly headlights flick on about 200 to 300 meters away from us, and it appeared at least two people began walking towards us.

Our entire group froze and I counted us, 7 in total. If all of us were accounted for, who did these two lights off in the distance belong to? We could have stood our ground, or called out to these people but we panicked and decided to bail. Our group turned and ran back the way we came, but after running some ways I turned to look behind us and the lights were still following us. We made it to our cars and out of the mine without incident, but finding people deep inside a mine unexpectedly was certainly an interesting experience.

Had a motion sensor go off "the other day."
Already inside, working the tripod from back to front. Partner got ambitious and moved too quick too close to the front. The exit sign there was the only noted evidence that showed that part of the building had any connected power.
Stuck around after getting clear. No one showed up and the building already had heavy passing police presence.

1.

2.

"hey! there is a truck driving around here!"

"what? oh shit- its a cop!"

"what do we do?"

"sit tight for a minute... wait for him to go out of site then lets get the hell outta this building!"

(cop turns corner and we exit)

then, while on the sidewalk 2 minutes later, 4 more cops show up.

BUSTED!

LOL these stories crack me up!
Another way to not get caught and it may not work everywhere but wear headphones (even if you're not listening to anything) and sunglasses.
If you're high up on something or behind a fence the cops don't feel like climbing you can pretend you don't see or hear them. This has worked EVERY TIME for us. Just continue setting up shots or whatever. They get exasperated and leave.

Well shit! That's terrifying! Some of these stories are both scary and hilarious.

We've been really lucky in not running into many people (if any), but at one point we had an "OH SHIT" moment when we were visiting an old, abandoned shipyard. We had found some abandoned apartments (or a motel) and inside we realized people were squatting there. No one was around thankfully, but we were a bit sketched and wondered if they were just gone or hiding or something.

I've got a few and I'll probably remember more later on and have to post them separately.

2010 Barra Castle (Demolished now so excuse the namedropping). I walk around the building and find a way in, I crawl inside and instantly hear something dropping on an upper floor. Mind you this place is pitch black and I'm alone. This building is in the middle of downtown and is notorious for druggies and homeless. I left without a second thought.

2010 Kodiak Shoe Factory (Also demolished). I spend a few months poking around trying to find a way in, with no avail. I end up going with a friend in the winter and find a hole in the fence. Around the back of the building there's a door open. We get close to it but decide against it. The same week two teenagers broke in and were detected by the silent alarms inside. They were arrested. Thank god we didn't go in.

2011 Old Red. Parked a few blocks away from this house and walk through a field to get to it. Within 5 minutes or so the owner of the business next door comes over and yells at me to get off his property.

2012 Crowe Foundry - I've had an "Oh Shit" moment here twice. Once with BeerBunny where we were in one half of the building and could see the POE. As we're walking around we see two burly gentleman come in and walk to the opposite side. We froze, then bolted once they were out of view.
Second time I was exploring with another explorer and as we were leaving two guys come in and claim they're here to look at the A/C unit. Asked us if we were being safe, etc.

2012 Plating Co. - I was arrested here. I've posted that story a few times, so I won't post it again.

This is getting really long so I'll just make a separate one.

So apparently I have really bad luck with exploring. Here's part two of my "oh shit" moments. Hope you're enjoying this Bonnie&Clyde!!

2012 Randall Farm (Demolished) - In the attic of an old farmhouse shooting a model. Casually look out the window and see a black van pull up the driveway, notice my dad's car beside the barn and turns around and leaves. That was scary because this place has been notorious for having a psychotic owner who freaks out at trespassers.

2012 Hotel - I'd been eyeing this hotel for a few years but after multiple attempts never got in. Another local explorer had made it in recently so I decided to give it another look through. It's open! Finally! Explore the entire thing, main floor to fourth floor. Decide to check out the basement. Not even past the first room in the basement when we start to hear footsteps upstairs. Immediately freeze in place. Wait a few minutes until the footsteps stop. We think whomever was there is gone so we look upstairs and are caught. Owner yells and cusses at us and threatens to call the cops so we just book it out the (now open) front door.

2013 Antique House - In the main floor of a house full of antiques when we hear a truck drive down the driveway. A pause, and then it backs out... Our car was right near where the truck stopped so he must've seen it and left. That was an unpleasant moment.

2013 TB Hospital - Two Oh Shit moments in the same explore. I did this one with Archie. As we're climbing up to the third floor window, we're just getting ontop of the second rooftop when a truck comes down the road. We press right up against the wall and hope they didn't see us. We make it in with no problems. Then as we're walking through an extension of the hospital we hear voices outside the wall right beside us. I could've sworn I heard a walkie talkie (I'm thinking Security or Cops) but we continue to explore and as we leave we notice a photographer and a model doing exterior shoots outside.

2013 Ski Hotel - Was inside a huge hotel with Finz519 when I notice a red truck slowly circling the hotel. He brushes it off as nothing (he didn't even see it) but I'm very paranoid. After fully exploring the main building and doing some exteriors it's obvious the red truck is gone.

Oh! Oh! Another one!

When I was exploring with Styles, we were looking at an abandoned log home on the edge of a quarry. We're just walking around it when all of a sudden Styles gets too close and sets off a very loud alarm. We bolted it through the overgrown field, hopped into the car and never looked back.

Okay, Okay. Here it is.

I had noticed several local explorers post a location about 15 minutes from my house. So I go with a friend of mine. We walk around, find an open door and walk in. We're there about 20 minutes - he goes his way I go mine. I'm at the back of the building furthest from the POE when I turn around and see red and blue lights reflecting off one of the walls. Took me a minute to clue into what was going on and I try and hide behind a half-wall. Few seconds later the door opens and the building is full with the sound of barking dogs. I start to panic but hold my place.

Then a loud male voice says "Police, Come out with your hands up." I start to stand up and walk towards the door, my friend who was hiding in a side room stares at me and shakes his head. Then the voice again "You have 30 seconds until we release the dogs." At this point I'm speed-walking to the police, and my friend is a few feet behind me.

The first thing I see in the darkness is these 2 huge German Shepard dogs with their teeth bared. Then I look up and see 3 police men and 1 police woman. My friend and I get patted down, handcuffed and brought outside and put into police cars.

The police start asking us our stories - I tell them there was an open door and that I've done nothing wrong. I know the consequence for trespassing and I'm prepared to pay for the ticket. But Ohh no. I sit in this cop car for 30 minutes or so. Outside the car I hear the cops talking. I didn't catch the whole conversation but I do hear "There's 5 open doors to the outside, there's no way they broke in." And "He had stolen property from the inside on him."

At this point I'm furious, knowing my so called "Friend" is now stealing and could get me in major trouble for his actions because I didn't know he was stealing. We get driven to the police station and are immediately checked into interrogation rooms/ holding cells. This room must've ben 4ft by 6 ft. It was so small, pitch white with a black door and a white table with two white stools.

I'm a naturally anxious person and I suffer from mild claustrophobia. So I'm freaking out. The cops come in and out and ask me questions "Did you know he was stealing? What did you do inside?" Then they ask if I have anyone I'd like to call. So I call my parents to come pick me up. It takes them a long time (or it felt like a long time) to get there.

Once my parents come and explain my hobby, the police let me go with no charges and in the end dropped the trespassing ticket too. My friend ended up getting charged with Theft under 500 and trespassing. He got a years worth of probation and a $200 fine.

From the time I was arrested to the time I was let go 6 hours had passed. Fucking. Crazy.

After all this, I find out the only reason I was detained for so long was because the real estate agent who called in the trespass had actually called it in as a break and enter and refused to admit he didn't properly secure the building...

Two moments come to mind:

1) I was exploring an abandoned skyscraper by myself and I went outside a door onto the roof. I realized that there was a chance it was locked RIGHT after it closed. It turned out that it was locked. I thought I was fucked cause I was at least 15 stories up and had absolutely no idea what part of the building I was at. This meant that I couldn't call a friend to help me out. Luckily a window was unlocked and I was able to open in. I will never make the mistake of not propping a door open EVER again.

2) I was exploring an abandoned high school when I looked out a window and a cop was chilling in the courtyard (watching our entrance). I didn't know this at the time but apparently the police now own the building and use it for active shooter training. I just started flipping out because our POE was a window that had been busted so it was very obvious. Luckily within about 5-10 minutes he pulled out of the courtyard and went to the other side of the school. We got the FUCK out of the building after that and never went back :/

Had my first moment earlier today. My gang (who are all rookies, this was the third adventure for 3 of us, 2nd for 1, and first for 2.) Decided to go down to Galveston, and we explored this weird, tall, white industrial building near the harbor (sorry, don't know the name). We were making our way out, through what was very obviously a hobo camp, shopping carts, sleeping bags, and beer bottles all. In front of us was a huge, ramshackle gate that looked like something from a Mad Max movie. On a side note, someone wrote "Not all who wander are lost" on the gate, which was personally the coolest thing to find for me.

Anyways, we slipped under the gate. We were walking on a driveway. There was nothing on our left, but the building extended all the way to the street on our right. Halfway to the street, a car passes by. We all press up to the wall like we are in Metal Gear Solid. The car passes and we all have a good laugh about it. We go to the edge of the building. There is a police car 30 feet away from us at an intersection. (I should mention that when we scouted the place a couple of days earlier, we were spotlighted and maglited by a cop.) We book it back, then halfway through awkwardly decide to walk like absolutely nothing is happening, to the gate. We are in cover now. A third of us want to just walk out like nothing is wrong, a third of us want to go back into the building and find our entrance point, and the other third just say we should wait it out. The cop drives directly in front of us. We are biting our nails, wondering what will happen. The cop stops, but thankfully he turns right, which leads further down the street we were looking at.

We walk out, sweating. We are on the side walk, and find a fence with a big hole in it that will lead back to the car. Out of nowhere, a wrecker driver appears, driving up to us, and lowers his gear. We hauled ass.

Impossible is a word to be found only in the dictionary of fools.
