Exploring the tunnels in Cincy
| | high school in Gary, IN < on 2/5/2014 7:28 PM >
| | | Touring a well known high school in Gary, IN that was closed down around 2004. It's a shame that when they close down schools (at least in Gary, IN) they tend to leave behind a lot of valuables including computers, photocopiers, lab supplies, school supplies etc. Additionally there is a lot of sentimental stuff like trophies and school records. This school was completely sealed off except for a side door that had been broken into. I do my best not to disturb a site like this. I just enjoy touring the facility and taking pictures. 1.

| | | Very nice! Schools have tended to be my favorite type of abandonment to explore. There can be so much history and memories in those places.

| | | Did you make it to the newer gym? The boxes upon boxes of brand new books on the second level if the gym made me so angry.

| | | As a collector of all things retro Apple I'm often tempted to "rescue" some of the Apple II+ and II Platinum hardware I've found here. But then again these machines are likely not to work due to moisture. Damn shame. It would suck to get caught with the gear anyway. It is all tagged with steel "Property of Gary School District" IDs. Potential trespass charges I can handle, theft not so much. [last edit 2/5/2014 10:15 PM by kenfagerdotcom - edited 1 times]

| | | I've always loved this location, it is the second best school Gary has to offer and the best gym floor failure I've come across so far.

So long as the boards and components haven't too heavily corroded, restoration is possible. Some components you will absolutely have to replace (e.g. electrolytic caps). Some boards have a backup battery which may leak over time and cause lots of corrosion around it.

| | | This is really a special place. It is a shame that it is abandoned. It was a great school. The spiral staircase, I believe is in the small gym. The large gym was impressive. We went in without a light, so it was a little hard to see in the main gym.

| | | There was a middle school in my area that has since been torn down that was in much the same shape as this one. Unopened books, computer equipment, copy machines and student records were all left behind. Most of the lockers even contained personal paper work! One of the friends who explored it w/ me had the opinion that maybe the district never intended to abandon the school. They may have 'shuttered' it for a couple of seasons thinking some promised, expected or implied revenue would come from the state, feds or whomever. By the time everyone realized the money would not be available, the school had already been broken into and at least partially trashed. Just a theory, mind you, but it would explain why some of these buildings look as if everyone involved just stood up and walked out on a 1 minute notice.

What school? DPS is kind of my thing these days. We learned how to defeat their security cameras in October and since then we have hit no less than 30 schools. Also, I'm sitting on a seat cushion right now from the school in the OP complete with the dude with the spear on the horse and everything.

Honestly I don't recall the name but it was right off of the I75 freeway on the West side. It was a mile or so kitty corner from the old Russell Building and was torn down a couple years ago.

| | | I want to go there, just so I can solve that math problem on the board. To show people that the school is still a place of knowledge and education. I feel like, at least to me, that would leave a pretty big impact and be really meaningful if somebody were to do that.

| | | ^Is this guy for serious? I can't tell...
I've been to this school a couple times and absolutely love it. The area it is in was actually the upper class area in Gary before people began moving to the outskirts to escape the pollution. The school shows it's class with it's two swimming pools, beautiful theater, awesome architecture, and other features. One of my favorite things about Gary is seeing places like this that were so elegant in their time. also, my favorite part about this school... the biology lab was left fully stocked:

| | | Yeah, those were a bunch of dead animals that they used for dissecting on the demonstration table in the room with the frog theres a bag of dead animals just sitting there. The photo i took though was of a bunch of them that someone had thrown out the window onto a lower level roof. I think if you look out the window in the hallway near the room i just mentioned you can find them. Need to wait til the snow melts though :p
