Armour Meat Packing Plant

Hey everyone, I'm new to UER and just wanted to introduce myself. I've been exploring abandoned places with friends for years but had never heard about urban exploring until relatively recently. Thought I would share some pictures from a recent adventure to an Armour Meat Packing Plant that has been abandoned since the 1950s. The place looks even more beautiful in the summer when plant life takes over, but the snow made the expedition even more exciting. Hope you all enjoy the pictures.

Thanks for sharing. Like yourself, I too did not know what 'urban exploring' was until I had been doing it for 10 years or so.

Pretty cool... We have one in Fort Worth, but there's nothing left in it.

Well, that answers that question. It does look better in the snow. And- you are braver than I am for getting up where you did.
Welcome!

I must be losing it because I could not figure out how to get back into this room the last few times I've gone here.

I climbed all the way up the staircase with the missing stairs and ended up in another staircase with a window overlooking that room but no way to get down into it. Nice work.

Be mindful of the "caretaker" who will run you off from this place. I've spoken to someone familiar with the location and this unsavory character is in fact a metal scrapper who has laid claim to the place. On my last visit, he just appeared from around a corner wielding a brick. Tried to explain what I was doing there and convince him my presence was benign, but he was not a man to be reasoned with. He drives a white pickup. Followed me in his truck all the way to my car then followed me about a mile to make sure I wasn't circling back. Good luck and be careful out there.

Took me three visits to figure it out. I reach second floor using the ladder on the wall that's behind the bathroom with the old fridge in front of its door (that way you avoid the staircase with missing stairs). Once on the upper floors, you have to go through a wall where someone kicked in the bottom half. Good luck. You'll find it next time.

thanks for the tip on that other room. I've been in it before a few years ago but after my last few failed attempts, I figured whatever ladder or staircase I used last time must have been removed.

Regarding the caretaker: Supposedly he is the last employee who worked there in his younger years when the plant shut down and was later hired on as a security guard of sorts. I actually don't think he's a scrapper because not much has been scrapped out of there, that i've noticed anyway, over the years that I've been going. I had an encounter with him a few years back and his threats and actions pissed me off but I've grown to appreciate his presence because he seems to be helping protect the place. Considering how bad other locations have been fucked up locally in recent years, I'm glad he's there. You just have to work around him.

Armour closed its doors in 1959. Even if this "last employee" was 16 years old at the time, he would be 71 years old today. This individual is not nearly that old. According to someone who took pictures of the plant in the 1980s, there used to be a caretaker but it is most definitely not the man who is currently there. The property no longer has an official caretaker. This man is without question a criminal who does not belong there. He has reportedly pulled a knife on someone there before, but he doesn't seem to be there every day, so it's definitely possible to work around him. And if he ever gets violent, a can of bear mace should put him at ease...

well, that's his story anyway. It has been a few years since I last saw him, so I can't say for sure how old he appeared to be because I didn't really pay attention.

Do you know for a fact that he is not authorized to be there? I ask because I don't know myself.

My source for this information is a local photographer who runs http://stlouispatina.com. He has some experience with this location and knows others who are also familiar with it and has assured me there is "absolutely 100% no way he is official." I don't have firsthand knowledge, i.e. I haven't called the city to determine if they employ a caretaker for this property. But my source would have no reason to mislead me about this guy, so I'm taking his word for it.
