Furniture for the hearing impaired **picture heavy

You never really know what you might find when you go inside a location. I have been known to get caught up and lost in the magic of afternoon lighting and decay.........maybe it's just the asbestos and lead paint that does that to me. Either way, the fact remains that it's difficult to tell exactly WHAT you are standing on, or what happened there. Sometimes what happened and the dark impact of that truth will be felt long after that building is gone. I found that to be the case with this beautiful location.

This furniture plant dates back to 1926 and was one of many factories that belonged to a rather iconic North Carolina based furniture company. This particular factory closed its doors in 2003 in order to save costs by outsourcing, eliminating approximately 400 jobs. There were other risks involved with working at this plant aside from job stability, however. In 2002, the Toxic Release Inventory ranked this plant in the upper 80-90% of dirtiest factories in terms of the amount of air-born chemicals it released that are known to cause developmental damage. It was estimated to have released 60,127 pounds of toxicants into the air that year. (It's worst year was 1988, when TRI calculated that over 468,000 pounds of developmentally damaging airborne toxicants were released) Today, there are not a lot of physical items remaining in this building, however we did find a box containing medical records from the many employees who suffered irreversible hearing damage as a result of working at this plant. One has to wonder just how bad "bad" can get........

This company eliminated 2900 jobs for outsourcing between 2001 and 2005. By 2010, nearly 9000 jobs had been eliminated. In 2013, the company closed its global headquarters and filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

Not that you would be able to tell any of this from looking at these pictures, but a little context can go a long way. Cheers ;)
