On a cold end-of-november day, 3 friends and I went to this huge industrial complex (20+ buildings) who was supposedly abandoned some years ago, with semi-active parts scattered through the site. The guy who tipped me on that location warned me about motion detectors on the ground floor of every building, so we'd have to be careful for that.

So, after a 1:30hr drive, we arrive on spot, make a recon around the area and finally find a POE.... which gave into the basement of a textile factory of some sorts. It was fucking -20C outside, so at first we were delighted to find that the basement we snuck into was heated, and that the place was fully lit.

Then we realized that the place was fully active... To hell with exploration, this has become a pure, hardcore infiltration!!! So we explored the place in complete silence taking pictures on our way, feeling the adrenaline rush every now and then, as we were expecting to stumble upon an employee or secca any time. But we didn't. We started feeling more confident, even though we passed in front of a couple motion detectors without triggering an alarm. We were soon to find out why...

Further on our explore, we entered a warehouse with 100s of luxury cars parked there, complete with every car key sitting on the roof of each car. We could have easily stolen a car an bail out (which we didn't, obviously). This is where we started feeling a bit out of place (read: "oh shit!") because we didn't know if it was a mafia joint or something that wasn't legit.. So we bailed out silently, and just when we were heading towards an exit, we saw through a window some employees leaving the premises towards their cars. We looked at each other and now understood why the alarm didn't scream when we passed those motion detectors. So we decided to get out before we got trapped inside.

On our way to the car, still in the perimeter, we saw this abandoned building that looked like the C.U.B. (therefore= tunnels!) so we decided to check it out; wrong move, as soon as we entered though a window, the alarm was triggered and it sounded throughout the whole complex!

OH SHITTTTT, part II: time to GTFO as quickly as possible. But, we were at the opposite of where we jumped the fence, meaning we'd have to walk through the whole complex, in plain view, risking getting caught. NO WAY. So, we decided to go through the main gate, as it was some hundred feet away from us. So, we took a relaxed look and pace, and just went through the main gate which was wide opened. We weren't 50ft outside the perimeter that we heard a voice screaming behind us, asking us where did we came from and how did we get in. We all thought to ourselves, that's it, we're getting caught, we're into big trouble now as we didn't have time to change memory cards and some of our pictures were very incriminating..

So, after a bit of social engineering, we managed to sweet-talk the security guard (telling him that we only took exterior shots because we like old brick buildings and the such), then the guard (an old man) got all nervous when he heard us mentioning pictures. He asked for our film rolls right away LOL. We told him that we were carrying digital cameras and that there were no film rolls. That caught him off a bit, so he decided to let us go with a warning.

And the irony is, all this discussion took place outside, and in the background we still could hear the alarm screaming (which surprisingly, the old guard didn't seem to notice, maybe he was a bit on the deaf side)

Moral of the story: Change SD cards when exfiltrating out of a sensible location!!!

Yes Deconstrukt, awesome story

I wish I could get the security camera footage of some of these stories.
Since so far everyone came out unscathed they would be pretty entertaining, especially played FAST.

Today I went out to an abandoned building, now keep in mind they just found a meth lab in my town a couple weeks ago and this place was next to a trailer park next to a high way.
All the doors where open, several of the windows smashed open, and there was a SLIGHT sulfur smell, but also a creek so I thought the creek was the source. I went on in and looked around, it wasn't in the worst condition ever, but had seen several teenagers and possibly a squatter whose stuff had been removed. I even saw some markings on a wall. Anyway I got through the house with the usual torn up abandoned look and when I was finishing up the garage a fellow came out from the trailer park, he didn't look bad but the meth cooks and dealers in my town usually don't look cracked out.
turns out he was just a neighbor who was tired of teenagers and squatters and a little annoyed I was there, still didn't want me photographing and told me to leave, what he didn't know is that I'd already been inside!

Apparently that DID just happen. And I AM proud of it

Went with friends to a construction site to climb a crane. 2 went first, jumping the fence and went up. I went last; went up about 3 stories, looked down and there's a security guard on the sidewalk looking up at me, cell phone to his ear. I went back down rapidly, when I'm within earshot of the guy I say "I'm leaving dude." He replied " you better be" or something like that. I had to climb the fence back out where I landed right in front of him. I start rapidly walking away, he follows. Walk became a trot, then a run and I was gone. Finally I could text the other 2 about the security threat, yet they made it down with no problem.

So my five friends and I decide to explore a 24 hour patrolled abandoned mental hospital one day and the story goes like this.

We arrive on the massive property and drive around scouting out all the buildings. There's a film crew filming towards the north section of the property, so we decide to go into the southernmost building to play it safe.

Anyway, as we're walking around the building searching for a POE, we notice multiple signs on the doors stating something to the extent of "If film crews leave a door unlocked and someone is thought to have entered the building, the building will be thoroughly swept through for up to three hours until the person has been found". So keeping this in mind, we find our POE and sheepishly make our way into the building. After my friend and one friend make it in, we look out the window to see a security car rolling up on our four other friends lecturing them about the prohibited picture taking and telling them that everyone must be off the property in 10 minutes.

My friends leave, but the security guard decides to sit outside the window we're at for another ten minutes on his phone. Finally he leaves and my friends return and we all get into the building. Feeling hyped, we cross the second floor's main foyer not even worrying about the motion sensors. We walk down the stairs to the main entrance and see that there's no security guard at the door so we walk down a hallway quite loudly. Five minutes later as we're walking back toward the main foyer even more noisily, we hear something outside the main doors. I peak around the corner to see a security guard entering the building. We retreat, only to realize that in order to get back to our POE, we must cross the main foyer. The problem... there's a security guard in the main foyer. We wait five minutes before slowly making our way to the main foyer. I peer around the corner again just in time to see the security guard leaving. We book it back to our POE past the motion sensors again and get ready to exit.

Luckily, our POE wasn't visible from the main entrance, so if the security guard was there, he would not have seen us. While waiting for my friends to exit, I decide to crawl to a window facing out toward the main entrance. I don't see anyone at first so I stand up and find myself looking down straight into the eyes of the security guard who's looking back up to me. I turn around and book it to the POE. My friends are already waiting for me on the ground. I'm standing at the POE and I see another security car driving toward us. I literally jumped down 15 feet and landed on the ground realizing we had nowhere to hide. The second guard gets out of his car and starts coming toward us yelling and screaming. That's when someone yells the code word (yes, we had a code word so everyone knew when to book it) and we all go running towards my friend's car. Turns out that when the security guard originally made my friends leave the property while I was already in the building, they parked the care a solid mile away. This didn't deter the guard however, as he followed us step for step. (Yes, shocking, but this was a fit and young security guard. So we get back to the car and we're frantically trying to open the doors, despite the fact that they're locked. We finally get in and start the car as the security guard comes within 20 feet of us. I guess we were too eager to make a getaway because the car stalled. The security guard is now standing right in front of the car. We put it into reverse and drive around him.

THE END (Sorry, I know these are supposed to be an "Oh Shit" moment but I got carried away as usual and wrote out the entire summary of our escapade)

It was in February 2010 at the Paramount Decor warehouse in Montreal. After a couple of hours of exploring, we were nonchalantly getting out by the gate leading to the yard when a police car pulled in the driveway! We quickly got back in the yard, convinced weve just been caught. We were all waiting for him to peek through the gate but instead, he parked his car facing Notre Dame street and watched the traffic for a good half an hour or so. That sure was a long wait but we were glad to get out of there without being noticed!

Now's the time to share one of my favorite Action Squad tales.

"I'd seen some ladders and potential routes downward the previous night that I was dying to check out, and I wanted to search further for the door to the Transformer Room - so we decided to head back the next day. We got back in without much trouble, got into the Assembly Plant, and started our search.

Now that we knew that Ford security patrolled the floor, we decided that rather than walk out in the corridors, where we would be easily spotted, we'd travel amongst the machinery and truck components, along the assembly line.
It seemed sensible at the time, and it sure felt safer hidden in the shadows and ample cover.

However, this sensible risk-management plan would backfire in our faces, soon enough.
I had a notion that the Transformer Room we sought might be not far in from the western wall of the plant (closest to the Hydro Dam and its tunnels), so we explored along that area, moving northward, getting into tool shops and electrician shops - for the Ford employees who worked on the machines that built the cars, not on the cars themselves.
It was cool, but there was no sign of an entrance to the tunnels, so we headed toward the center of the plant, moving among the control panels, conveyors, and machinery.

And that's when it happened - one instant, all was quiet, chill, dark.
The next - flashing and spinning red siren lights, a metal clapper alarm bell, like an old Big Ben alarm clock with a megaphone, instantly shattering our calm as it shattered the darkness and quiet.

An alarm had been triggered.

The sound was deafening. If someone was running at us, I wouldn't be able to hear it. The bell was nearby - within 20 feet for sure. The flashing light, as well. Did they know exactly where we were? Were they around us now?

We bolted, ran like electrified jackrabbits, ducking beneath equipment, trying to see from which direction security was descending, trying to get distance between ourselves and the strident, horrifying alarm - and then trying to figure out which way the steam tunnel cage was.

But in the panicked surge of adrenaline and fear, when escaping likely approaching security was the immediate priority rather than finding a way out, we'd both lost our bearings.

Zig-zagging around workstations, assembly bays, hissing back and forth as we ran.

"Is it this way?!"

"I DON'T KNOW."

"Shit!"

Finally, I spotted the railroad tracks that cut through the plant, got my bearings and sprinted toward the steam tunnel.
We ran down into the caged stairs leading down into the boiler room ... and I stopped Mandelbrot.

"Hold on."
"What!?"
"Wait a sec. I wanna see the response."
"WHAT?!"

Catching my breath, I explained that we were probably in the clear now - even if security came in, we could disappear out to the Steam Plant easily, while everyone's attention was on the Assembly plant. And I wanted to see what kind of response was raised - this has always been my preference after escaping an alarm successfully - hang tight nearby and evaluate the response ... if you have any intention of returning, it could be instructive.

Besides - I really wanted to find an entrance to the sand mines. I was starting to suspect that the alarm we'd tripped was not a security alarm, but a localized safety alarm ... and I was getting ideas about sticking around.

The alarm bell, now distant and less frightening, smaller, clanged on.
After several minutes, there was still no sign of a response. Across the assembly floor, the flashing red light was barely visible through the racks of truck parts and assembly line machinery.

I eased the squeaking cage door open and stepped back out.

"I'm going to try to turn it off. If I'm not back in a few minutes, or you see or hear anyone coming after us, run."
And then, as damned ridiculous as it seems now, I darted back across the assembly floor, toward the alarm.

When I got there, I was going to get up into the machinery we'd offended, and see if there was an obvious means of aborting the alarm.
If no one had come yet, I had a shot at turning it off before a patrolling security guard heard the racket, I figured.

Approaching the screaming equipment, I saw a huge control panel, with a monitor built in and lots and lots of buttons and switches. It was beyond nerve-wracking to run up to it and try to find a way to shut it up - once I got anywhere near the alarm, I couldn't hear anything but the clanging bell - if anyone was coming, they'd surprise me.
Several frantic button pushes later, I realized that I was not going to be able to shut it down, and I aborted the mission, darting back toward the steam tunnel.

After a few more minutes went by, the alarm ringing and ringing without any noticable reaction, I decided I wanted to risk checking out the area around the line worker's cafeteria, which was just across the railroad tracks and down a short ways.
Mandelbrot reluctantly agreed, and we slipped out of the door and across the tracks, using the platforms and hitches between two boxcars to get across the track trench easily.

We'd made it maybe 20 feet away from the track when the incessantly ringing alarm abruptly stopped.

The sudden silence was just as startling as the alarm had been.

A second stretched out, and I had just enough time to say "let's go" before the mother of all alarms went off.

Whereas the original alarm had been localized, singular - this alarm was global, from everywhere, and we were running and across the tracks and down the tunnel and through the steam plant and outside into the cover of the woods and sneaking through the shadows toward the car before we had time to catch our breath enough to speak again.

"Holy shit. That was scary."
"Yeah.
... and fun."

My friend and I got chased around last night in the desert by Raptors. Less of the Jurassic Park kind and more of the Ford Police truck. Man those spotlights are bright. Seemed like they were everywhere for a while.

The main problem was that we had already gotten a warning on property.... and then went back. We smartly parked on private land after asking that owner's permission and then hiked all the way in. They must have been sure we were out there after most likely respotting my vehicle nearby because they combed that place hard.

Not very good at story telling, but figured I'd give it a shot!

After work one night, I figured I'd do a night shoot in one of my favorite buildings in the downtown area. I do a quick recon to see if anythings going on, and then start to head in. I find 2 bikes behind the POE that weren't there a couple days before. This heightened my alertness a bit, but I threw it up to just a couple of teenagers adventuring around. Though normally this would red-flag things given the amount of attention reckless teenagers would bring shining their cellphone flashlights and talking all loudly, I decided to proceed given the size of the location (about 2 city blocks). While I move up to the 4th floor, I noticed voices, where I move into completely silent mode.

I wait for the noises to go away and proceed with shooting. I get a couple of great shots, and end up moving onto the rest of the building. When I move into the old storage part of the building, I move across the old 1920's wood floor and their very unique sound for those of us who have experienced it, I hear something reacting to my footsteps, so I go to the wall and walk along it to prevent noises and I see a flashlight almost shine on me through those old grid pattern glass on the outside. At this point I am disassembling my tripod and gear as well as getting my respirator off to look as least suspicious as possible if I'm found. I hear footsteps above me so I dash into a stairwell and head down to a one way door that I know will lock behind me and prevent an easy POE to a preserved building.

As I pack the rest of the stuff in my kit, I see a car drive by in the milky tinted window and sit tight for a minute. As I proceed to leave, I see a cop sitting directly in front of the door. At this point I know he saw me but not my full face or body so I dash back in and close the door so it will not open on his side. As I dash back in I hear the door trying to be opened as I'm making my way across a building the size of a city block. As I get back to the POE I originally went in. I see one bike missing and what appears to be a sign of a struggle. At this point I hear 3 cop cars going around the building block with flashlights in the holes on the side of the building.

At this point I'm trying to get out of the side of a fence and waiting behind a thin green cloth on the other side of the fence. I manage to get out and given the amount of attention, walking down the street would likely bring too much attention given it being 2 am at night. I ended up getting my camera up and taking pictures of the outside of the building and the cops said if I saw any teenage boys go into the building and then let me be. No idea what happened in there, but it was an odd adrenaline filled night with an almost screwed moment.

About two months ago I decided to go check out an abandoned 100+ year old school that I heard was marked for demo soon. I got my stuff together and headed over alone, as I always am. (Yesterday was my first explore with another person and 10 mins inside she fell in the dark and had to go to ER. I was in between walls in a boiler room looking for tunnels so I couldn't even get to get right away. While I know exploring alone can be insane at times, it also has it's advantages, too.)

So I head over to the school. It's on a busy road in a sketchy part of town but I ran into two other explorers (we scared each other out of the place, actually. Ha.) who said they'd been through it and saw no one, so I took the opportunity and ran back in. The only POE that I found, after fully circling the entire building was one large busted out window on the side. So back in I go, camera ready, cell ready, flashlight ready and a full giant can of gel pepper spray on my hip. I redo my standard practice of standing still and just listening for a minute or two. Dead silence...so on I go. Through the entrance room, down a long dark hall (most windows and doors on the first floor have been boarded up.) and through some pretty amazing rooms. Next stop...second floor.

I climb the crumbling stairs to the upper level which is much brighter, and begin my silent and quick survey of each room on either side as I tiptoe down the hall. I had now been inside about 30 mins and in one room upstairs I just randomly chose a busted window to shoot through thinking the broken glass in focus with the courtyard below out of focus would make a cool shot. This was also the ONLY window I decided to look out of. I crouch down, get the shot and as I'm standing back up I hear a shuffle from outside. I look back out of the window just in time to see a very large dude barreling like the Terminator cop towards the building. But this guy is no cop. And here I am, alone on the second floor, nowhere near the POE and knew it was do or die.

I don't know if this is a common reaction or not, but rather than flipping out with panic, I was overcome with intense calm as my brain took about 3 seconds to fully assess what was going on, where that guy was and at the quick rate he was trudging towards the POE, how long it would take him to round the back of the building and halfway up the side to it, as opposed to how long it would take me to exit that classroom, run down a very long hall, down a flight of stairs, run halfway down the dark hall downstairs, across the large entry room and out that same window. This was a time when having anyone less experienced would have been a disaster because I had zero time to explain anything. So I jammed my camera into my coat and did indeed run as silently as possible from top floor to bottom floor and vaulted myself through the open window and just started walking towards the front of the building. When I reached the corner I finally turned my head and there he was, about to go in. I'd missed meeting this person by only 30-45 seconds and all thanks to that one window I chose for some reason, to look out of. Gut instinct is king in these places. Especially when alone. All I can say is once I made it to the car and allowed myself the luxury of feeling feelings, the rush of the close call was beyond amazing. And I got some of the greatest shots to date in there. Wooooooosh.

The most tense moment always seems to be hearing a knock on the door while you're in an abandoned house and those few seconds after when you're expecting to hear "police, open up". Happened to me and a couple friends, thankfully it was just some neighbor kids trying to freak us out.

I'll use code names just in case.

It was last summer, i was visiting my cousins and grandparents down in Lufkin. It was me, Alpha (16 yr old cousin) and Son (11 yr old cousin).

The day started off innocently enough, we were bored of video games and wanted to something with a little more thrill. SO i got the genius idea of going geocaching (I was new at it) and my cousins had never heard of it. So we did and after countless tries with no success, we finally found one way back in the woods behind some softball fields. Keep in mind this was summer and it was east texas so it was hotter than blue blazes and humidity was a killer. So we stopped at the local taco/tamale place because it was nearby and bought some water bottles and chilled out.

However, we noticed something totally awesome across the street. A chain fence around the perimeter and some old rusting buildings and alott of land that we could not tell what mysteries it could have held.

So eventually we found our POE and climbed under the fence a longgggggggg ass ways down from where the actual buildings were. It was going well and we found all sorts of neat things such as a huge gravel hill and multiple scrap piles and plenty of old vehicles. I pieced together that this place was at least "somewhat" active due the newish construction vehicles out in front near the buildings.

After having no problems other than it was getting late and dark, we made our way back to our original POE and had all squeezed under the fence when Alpha says "oh shit."
I'm like "dude?"
"I don't have my keys on me...OH. i had accidentally dropped them when we were taking pictures with that fire extinguisher, i know exactly where they are, ill run and go get em."
So before i can even argue, he crawls back under the gate and chops the 100's yards away while Son and i start walking down the road as to not look suspicious, standing near a rusty fence. It seems like hours but i must have been 10 minutes before he comes running back, out of breath of course, "Dude FUCK they are not there."
I'm like "howww...whyy"
And he goes ramblin off that he searched hard and i'm like "aint no way" so i crawl under and fly to the specified location searching frantically, and Alpha and Son arrive minutes later.

So we are all three there searching for some goddamn car keys in this, basically, a rubble pile, which is 100x100 meters or so just concrete floor (obviously a building was once there), metal shavings, nails, bolts, wires, dirt, etc.
Essentially it was trying to find a needle in the haystack. We must have looked like such idiots. ANYWAYSSSSSSSSSS.....

We start to hear this low rumbling sound and look everywhere but notice nothing out of the ordinary. So we began to make our way back to the exit, and it is not until it is right up on us we see a fourwheeler. Miraculously we made it to a patch of tall grass, so we immediately dived into it.

We were determined to wait this guy out but we had no idea if he was security or a hooligan. Anyways he drove all around the place for atleast 20 minutes. We thought for sure he was gonna give up. But somehow at the end he saw us and walked toward us and said "hey come here" so we obeyed.

In the end we were able to play off the "we are innocent kids and just stumbled over here somehow and want to get home really badly" hahahaha so he let us go without asking for names or phone numbers or anything. Boy were we relieved.

Sorry for the length of this post. I'm new, give me a break.

The biggest "Oh shit" moment i've ever had was when my friends and I had gotten in to Schmidt's brewery. After going in we were exploring for about 30 minutes thinking nobody was inside because it was around 10:00 or 11:00. So after walking around the part of the building that we were, we walked towards the stairs so we could get on top of the roof. The only problem is, the security was inside the building instead of outside of the building. When I saw the security sitting at a table inside, I was at the most, 10 feet from him. So he got up and walked towards us. Then as he was walking towards us, we ran as fast as we could out of the building to escape him. We amazingly all got away that night but it was for sure a close call.

Back in the day(yes I am old) we decided to explore a giant cotton warehouse in Downtown Memphis. This was before smartphones. We had one flashlight in the car and a couple of lighters.

Well, we got in through an unlocked window and discovered the place was still active just closed for the evening.

Problem was that our battery died and we were smart enough not to use a lighter in a warehouse full of cotton dust.

We couldn't find our point of exit in the pitch black. We wound up spending the night until it got light enough to find a way out. We even planned on waiting by the door until someone unlocked it, then go screaming out like something was wrong!

Oh and active infiltration of Graceland was a bad idea too.

scariest for me was exploring a psych hospital in NY with two friends (all ladies) and we heard someone sawing in the basement, which was the way we had come in. We weren't sure if we had another way to get out or if we'd end up face to face with whomever was sawing, but it definitely scared the crap out of me. We made it out and never saw anyone, which is almost even creepier...
