| | | Finally got to explore the American Ice Company Building in West Baltimore. It's a building tons of people pass on a daily basis, visible from the commuter and Amtrak trains and on a major thoroughfare. It's an easy building to check out, but in an area where there could definitely be people squatting or up to trouble inside. I got lucky and had the place to myself on a snowy day. It was built in 1911 and surprisingly it's been abandoned for only about 10 years. There are lots of plans to redevelop it for mixed use. I'd love turn it into a shelter with community services and even some retail. http://www.youtube...atch?v=PuPEs4P8RDg Borrowed text from, http://www.baltimo...rican-ice-company/ Constructed in 1911, the American Ice Company is an enduring reminder of West Baltimore’s industrial development with a striking brick facade on W. Franklin Street and a powerhouse that backs up to the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks. At the time of the building’s construction, West Baltimore was quickly developing beyond the 1816 city line as small builders put up new rowhouses that soon extended west out to the Gwynns Falls. The previous decade had also witnessed significant changes in the ice industry as the business of importing natural ice from rivers and lakes in the Northeast to Mid-Atlantic and Southern cities dwindled in the face of competition from new factories that enabled businesses to supply a more regular and consistent supply of “manufactured ice.” The building was severely damaged in a 2004 fire. Fortunately, the current owner supported a recent nomination to the National Register of Historic Places and plans to redevelop the property while retaining the historic ice house structure. http://www.mdot.ma...altimore_Chap3.pdf http://www.baltimo...nd-west-baltimore/ http://www.bizjour...-ice.html?page=all 1

| | | Very cool (no pun intended) location! Nice write-up too. Yeah it pisses me off when I see buildings that could be used as shelters. It doesn't snow out here but it get pretty cold (3 homeless people died this week alone). "Let's tear it down and build a Dollar Tree and a KFC!" seems to be the popular opinion though.
The question is not when are we gonna stop, It's who's gonna stop us? |

| | | This is one of those places I've known of for years but disregarded as bein a hollow trash filled shell. But I went for my first time last year and was presently surprised. Very cool quick fun explore. Turbines were my favorite part. I assumed a place in west baltimore would have zero metal left behind. Watching the trains from the roof is really fun too.
