Abandoned gold mine near Hope

Since i work out of town most of the time... I may as well make the most out of the situation. Stopped by this mine today on my way back to Kamloops.

Lowest shaft entrance is fully flooded. Just before i left i found a second entrance which clear of water and debris. I didn't venture in at this time as i was alone... but definitely planning to go back.

Half of the mill has been demolished, what is still standing is in decent shape.

Ah, memories.

No one on site? Last I heard an exploration company was into it. Let me know if you want company, that place is always cool. Bring your big lights.

As it shows on the pictures... its pretty quiet there still. There is a locked gate about a kilometre before the mill. I didn't hike to the tailing pond or up other roads in the area. but as far as i can tell. Nothing happening on site yet.

with a quick search i found this info

plans on drilling this summer to confirm historical data as well as increase gold inventory.

They are hoping to start the project again sometime in 2013.

The company will also be conducting a preliminary economic assessment soon, followed by a comprehensive economic feasibility study to determine the cost of bringing the mine back into production. either as a underground mine, or possibly as an open pit mine.

"Carolin Mine also has 10 kilometres of stable underground tunnels with no acid rock drainage."

Pay attention for bears too, have seen several pass through there when I've been there.

I usually got bear spray with me in remote forested areas.

Im used to seeing bears from somewhat close proximity. Lived in North Van for 6 years... run into them in the driveways, roads, on the bike trails... and now we see them from time to time on my current jobsite at the logan lake copper mine. Most the time they run away as soon as they see you.

I do not fear them. Black bears are scavengers. They are not predators. That said, i also threat them with respect. As they will attack if they feel threaten.

Grizzlies, Thats a different story. Although they dont see human as prey. They are quite a bit more aggressive.

You cant outrun a bear.... just make sure you can outrun at least one of your buddies.

If you don't mind some bushwack there is also the Emancipation hidden somewhere on the hillside above it. Had a tramway, mill, and significant workings about 60 years ago.

Took the day off work, borrowed a gas monitor from work. Then we went venture inside the Mine tunnels. Lower tunnels are much narrower, lined with tracks. the tunnels higher up were designed for vehicles. much bigger tunnels, But what a Maze.... dont think i was gona easily go back out the way we came in. instead we hiked to the top of the mountain via the inside. then hiked back down outside. in all we spent 10 hrs inside. This was definitely not long enough, all ready planning a return trip.

1. Looking up one of the shafts, Most ladders going up these were broken, badly rotten. the ones that were in ok shape... would require you going thru a waterfall to get to the next level.

2. I love taking pictures and looking like a ghost.

8. badly rotten lumber + planks covering a huge hole. My 135 lbs easily snapped some 4 X 6 along the wall... this covers a drop to the lower lever where the conveyor is. The water is up to the ceiling of that tunnel.

9.

10. this is a bad shoot, out of focus... Needing much more powerful flashlights, and to show the size of that cavern.... fisheye lens. There is 2-3 caverns inside the mine. each 200 to 300 feet high and 100-300' long. all have several "windows" giving into them.

13.Last shot of the day. Last piece of steel wool, and got pitch black right after.

Doesn't look like much has changed there. The quality of the pictures from Redux, and Rio has though Very nice.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

?? All the credit for these photos is well deserved by Rio. I'm just appreciatin' like the rest of you. My own shots from the mine were pretty dismal.

I've seen many such videos from Carolin and still cannot at all fathom the level of Darwin Award contendency that inspires people to tool around an unstable tunnel with an object which generates incredibly amounts of noise and vibration. The cab isn't going to save them when the mountain finally gives way on top of their half-ton.

I'm wary of whispering when I go in old mines for goodness sake.

When i went to this mine, they had concrete blocks blocking the entrances. so we walked, which is better anyways. that way you get to see areas that you might otherwise miss.

The other mine I have been in was in Nevada. 7 levels deep. random dynamite sticks and blasting caps laying around. In that mine, the rock is nearly the same color at the dynamite. ....did i mentioned you could see the nitroglycerin sweating out of the sticks!!!

the way i see it, FREE BURIAL!!!!

im kinda of a optimistic guy

We went, 'twas good. They cleaned up that lower portal, but took out the train. A little snow at higher portal elevation, probably not too much longer before it's closed for the season.

The old mill. Oh Heeeeeey.

Fezlorean climbing up to the conveyor tower (or trying to avoid being sucked into the portal). I suspect the mine had an underground crusher connected to the base of this conveyor- unfortunately, it's completely (and has always been) flooded.

Spacious siding, tracks in good condition. Lots of ground water seeping in, dripping from the walls and ceiling, at this time of year.

Not my photo, because I'm on the conveyor.

Though this would be of interest and good use for some of us.

Its easy to see why the conveyor level is fully flooded.
