Interesting. Did you ever solve this intense mystery?

Nope. I still have nightmares.

Once we got home we did a bit of research and found that one of the guys was tied to some tasing people and robing them in a cave incidents.

What, is that a thing? How much traffic can one cave see? I think I would stick to mugging people on low lit streets or something ...

Just a few days ago, I had a preface "dammit!" followed by a genuine "oh shit!" I went on a four day explore of six targets. The first - I hiked from parking spot to entry point but heard heavy machinery, and saw a couple of tractors and backhoes in action. "Dammit!"

So I bailed, drove to second target and did a flyby for intel. Early next morning, I followed through with planned parking and target entry point. So far so good. Some photos, in building one, then in building two. I move to a large garage door facing the sun, look right and "oh shit!" A truck that had not been there, was there, facing me with the driver door open. I back up, skitter a few dozen feet, look back to the garage door, and there's the truck, with driver spotting me and getting out.

Needless to say, the end of that explore. From "oh shit!" to "ahhhh shit."

Had the same kind of thing happen in both Detroit and Buffalo on seperate occassions.

In Detroit a couple years ago we were keyed in on a PoE at a place. Drove up, homeless dude outside with a barrel fire and shed chilaxing. I mussled up $10(?) to just kinda break the ice so he could his 40z and move out of the way of the PoE. He was massively cool about it - so we went in, took shots for about an hour. I didn't pay attention to him (which I should have), but as we were going in he told us about another guy who was sleeping near the entry point. Ya, that came back to bite us - he woke up after were just about done with a crowbar and an attitude. Some-what smooth talking on my part as the rest of the group kinda finished packing up may have saved us some hassle. But after an undergrad in PSY and a great understanding of mental health background - I knew exactly what was going on with the guy. Probably 6'3-4 250lbs? Naturally, I'm a small/short fat chubby kid that loves cheese cake - so that could be grossly overstated.

Phrenzee? validate size?

Second was here in Buffalo where I was on the second floor of a building close to downtown. Sunday, 9AM. About an hour into pic taking - an entire lawn crew shows up and evidently they were using the front office area as a storage place for tools. Needless to say I spent about 30min frozon above them trying to not even breath.

I know of plenty more horrific "sport urbex" hunting stories in Detroit - some posted here on UE - but from personal experience, nothing freaks one out than sitting in a location that you have 0 or next to 0 control over except to try and not shit your pants or cry.

One of a few recent stories in this vein, although of the getting-caught variety. But I seriously did not want to get caught here.

It was the graveyard shift, and I was solo-re-shooting a l-e-o-protected locale with exactly one exit, and suicide everywhere else. Whereas a lot of scouting work went into establishing their schedule and modus operandi, this all went to shit when on my way out, the l-e-o was not only there when he wasn't supposed to be... but in a location which we had never seen him in (and so we assumed he had no access) that cut off all avenues of possible escape, at least for how I was equipped at the time.

This was a really stressing locale anyways, so I was a little too stressed to even shit my pants. It was already mission mode, so it was, "bad situation, what can I do to better my odds?" I decided that my odds would be better if I were closer to the exit and the l-e-o, so I could assess his state of attention, being graveyard shift and all.

One thing people don't train for anymore these days (maybe aside from adventure racing such as Ragnar/Warrior Dash) is the army crawl, but in a stealthy way. I ended up army-crawling for ~200ft to keep under a ~2ft height threshold with my FF camera and an 8lb tripod on my back. The camera survived, my smartphone in my lapel pocket didn't (being bashed by the tripod head coming around several times).

(Some elements omitted here that upped the sketchiness meter by *a bit*.)

At ~70ft away, I hid behind some obstructions and watched. Watched him get out of his car and use the Porta-Potty on the site (so much for the usual waiting out a security guard going on his restroom break). This went on for an interminable amount of time. I figured that I was screwed once day broke, or if there was a proper shift change (which would necessarily take it into daytime). I figured if that occurred, I would just give up.

Miraculously, he just left. A little over 1.5 hours later, he just did the things to let himself out, got in his car, and just left.

Damn right I dashed toward the exit.

Lesson-of-the-day: Don't sketch out in desperation. Wait it out, and your luck could very well change.

Lesson-of-the-day-2: Going with at least a partner provides an alternative viewpoint that might point out, "uh, that's a desperately sketchy ploy; I ain't up for that, homie." Solo is a pretty bad echo chamber when it comes to questionable ideas.

I was trying to get into a building where all the first floor was locked/boarded up and the only way in was climbing onto the roof and climbing down an access ladder down into the building. I started to climb down the ladder and didn't know the top bolts were loose so the ladder shifted back and I almost fell the 10-15 feet down. I managed to swing my momentum back and everything was good. Next time I went I found a door unlocked...

I was in a basement and we were standing in a very dark area [it was night time and we were in all black too]. A couple of guys, they were up to no good, started coming down the stairs [I couldn't rhyme neighborhood here - lol] and they shined their lights right over us as they turned the corner while we were standing quietly against a wall about 20 feet away. They shined the light against a wall and said "Dude! The blood is still there!" and the took off laughing. We sat tight til we heard a car start and slowly, quietly made our way out to where we could see the driveway. They were pulling on to the street in a pickup and they never saw us.

I don't know about you, but sounds like someone got beat up, injured, or murdered there. I'd steer clear of going there again, haha

Yeah, that was about 5 years ago. I think I went back a few times. It looked like a couple frat guys so we weren't too worried. I haven't been back there now in about 4 years though. It was probably the most "Oh Shit" I've ever had. For years I went there with various groups of people and every time something strange happened but never one like that where we thought we may be next for someone's nefarious deeds.

Dtew....when exploring alone I hope you at least tell someone where you're going. I try to make a habit of it.
Sorry about your phone!

Reading all these posts from people is enlightening. I'm glad everyone ended up ok and can laugh about it now but DAMN, even exploring in a group I wish everyone would have a lifeline to send in the Calvary if something went wrong.

So yeahhhhhh with law enforcement, depending on my mood, it's basically a crap shoot. We can either be sweet as pie, borderline confrontational (which may make us front runners for another Rodney King fiasco), or just completely clam up.

One funny incident was in the Presidio. We had been in this building years before but on a whim decided to go back.
Well in the basement we see an electrical panel with a bunch of lights on (wasn't there last time).
Our POE was a boarded window where the board hooks on a nail but once you unhook it the board swings SIDEWAYS. Apparently no one caught that cause it remained the same all those years!
So about 15min into the explore I glance outside and see a cop car pull up out back. We decide to continue our explore anyways. Going into different rooms we see that actually there's MORE cops slowly surrounding the building.
We bicker a bit, he wants to go upstairs and make the cops "work for it" in catching us. I wanna lurk near the POE until there's a lapse in PD and jump out. As we argue we glance at the window and there's a cop with his face pushed up against the glass. We freeze in place (Vogue!) and he moves to the next window. With the grime on the windows and the outside glare he couldn't see us!
So exit stage right we FLY out the window and walk to the front of the building, right INTO a cop.
Then the COPS start arguing cause none of them saw us inside nor exiting the building. They make a huge deal over a pocketknife,we get handcuffs and lots of intimidation tactics. They separate us (into different cars) and take us for a ride. We both denydenydeny and finally their boss calls over the radio of my car and I hear him say "if you didn't witness it we got nothing. Release them"
*cue my best James Cagney smirk* as the cop who was the prick of the bunch turns to look at me.

After telling us we are free to go the police explain there were silent alarms and different zones being tripped so they KNEW we were inside, but we were released so could we please tell them the POE for future reference?

"But we were never inside hehehe!".

While exploring an abandoned and half-burned monastery with my wife, we are happily taking pictures... Suddenly, she calls me in a hushed tone and says...

There is a big black SUV with 'security' on it, is it a problem ?
(that's one of the reasons why I love her, she so unfazed by anything)

We just watched silently while the patrol did a very rapid check (1 lap around the building, without getting out of it's truck) and left...

We left without any problem after that.

Im just finishing visiting a heavy crane location place that had moved out a year ago. The building was mostly disapointing and both large guarage had relatively "to-rent" trucks, tipping me that the place was less abandonned that i tought. Thinking the trucks might be under some motion sensor range, i conpletely left them alone and calmly proceed toward the exit.

It's 9am on a bright blue sky, i just step out and start walking in the desserted courtyard, about 100ft to do to the fence, when i notice from the corner of the eye a pickup behind the courtyard main gate, motor running, lights on, 2 shadows sitting in the cab. Oh shit !

I was as visible as if i was dancing on the hood of the vehicle.

I didnt change my pace, just continued to walk toward freedom (lucky for me, away from them) wondering if they had the key of the gate. Too bad they couldnt hear me whistle my nervosity out.

As soon as i passed the fence, i was well covered in vegetation (there's a railroad passing there). I watched them watching me, they took off. I got down the slop, pass the railriad, up the other slope, passed an empty field, got to my bike, then started to get paranoid about all white truck moving around !

Finally, that truck got me way more thrill than the building itself hehehe

awesome thread OP.

anyways a few, none too severe though.

just as a friend and i started to climb our way into an abandoned high school, this couple drives up on the grass outta nowhere in their truck and walk out. they ask what we're doing, we come up w/ some b.s. about a history project and photos. they tell us some guy was trying to rob their house and ran over at the hs and confusedly ask us to be careful and leave since we were two girls. we tried to stay, but they kept watching us from their truck so we left.

during a crane climb, just as a buddy and i were starting our descent, i spotted a cop car over at the hotel next to us. the cop was talking to some hotel worker. we waited until he/she left (couldn't tell from afar) and then continued our way down.

once was at some abandoned place that sold chemicals, everything def felt and was abandoned inside, then i turn on the light switch in the bathroom, which worked. my friend and i spotted a fridge (the horizontal kind you see in horror movies haha) and found a bunch of frozen food in there. it was one of those "oh shit someone lives here" kind of moments. maybe a squatter? we left soon after though.

When you get busted going into a super easy building you just watched two scrappers go into 20 minutes ago carrying an oxyacetylene tank over their shoulders by four women cops in an unmarked Ford Taurus...and you have a handgun on your hip with a backpack full of beer.

I was at a place that has an active youth correctional facility on campus, so it's patrolled pretty regularly. I was at a "t" intersection, looked left, looked right didn't see anything stepped out into the "street", look right again and a big old white security truck is coming up the road. I take off into some scrub and squat for like 15 minutes waiting for the truck to roll up or by to bust me. Finally got impatient and doubled back so I could exit another way.

I was by myself and didn't know that I was hiding out by the coolest building (I hadn't explored). I was too nervous to go on and got out of there. Shortly after that, I quit exploring on my own. My other urbex friends finally convinced me exploring on your own is a bad idea.

Walking around the bottom of a drained bumper boat pool, and looking up just in time to see a cruiser pull up to the edge. Fortunately he wasn't a dick and just asked me to leave, which I did once I managed to climb back out.
