I'm sorry, did you find that offensive somehow? Lmao Pretty sure my post was the first in this thread for a few days, and on some forums, people can be pricks about necroing dead threads and about how long it takes for a thread to be considered dead, etc. Therefore I just prefaced my post with that as a sort of "you guys might consider this thread dead, but here I am anyway" message. I'm new here after all, so I don't fully understand the dynamics of the forum and whatnot yet. I hadn't really intended to get into an argument over how I worded a post I wrote about flashlights, but if it really bothered you that much, then I sincerely apologize. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings after all.
| I'm glad you apologized. My feelings are very sensitive. I'm a very sensitive person. There are threads around here that haven't been posted to in a month, and they still aren't quite "dead". And there are some that are "dead" as of the first time it's posted to and created. heh.

| | | Posted by Trackrunner I really only took interest in the maglite cause it was on sale and looked a whole lot better than the energizer flashlight I'm currently using (couldn't find a model number anywhere on it). As for my price range, something around 25 dollars would be nice. In particular, something that could allow me to switch between beam types i.e long beam focusing on a specific spot for drains, and another mode where the light is more spread out, for buildings.
| So, just off the top of my head, I'd say go with a Coast light. I've used an older model of their lights, and was fond of it at the time, before I had anything better. Check out: http://www.coastpo...m/led-flashlights/ To learn more about their handheld lights. They even have one's that are rechargeable, and can still be used with typical Alkaline batteries too. You can get something in the 200lm to 600lm region for about $20 - $60, that allows you to use both flood and focused light. If you were willing to spend just a bit more... I'd go for the SolarForce L2p platform system from www.sbflashlights.com That allows you to use a flashlight that is a "platform". You choose the LED drop-in you want, and the battery type. You can get a Cree XML dropin that puts out like 350+ lumens, with a body, with a rechargeable battery, with a charger...for about $80. And as technology upgrades, you just screw off the top and drop-in different LED modules, using the same light body. I've been using mine for almost 4 years now and I absolutely love it. Hope this helps you a little. I'm sure other people will chime in and give you some suggestions, as there are a lot of affordable lights out there.

| | | Posted by Therrin Tell me more about arc-discharge lamps..... *sits down with his legs folded and waits to learn from the Maester*.
| They're bright. It's a high-output, small-source lamp with good potential for throw. At present, the surface brightness is higher than any LED so the potential range is greater. They don't dim below about 50% output and shouldn't flick off/on too quickly. There is no filament to shatter. High-output portable searchlights use short-arc lamps for those features. Some cars use the same technology (HID, High Intensity Discharge arc). You can make your own pretty easily. Get an "HID Kit" from Ebay, more watts is brighter. Stick this into a 12v spotlight body. CPF has more details on which hosts to use. Heck, let's talk lamp types for portable lighting. All the adjectives are relative, so when I say a fluorescent has very low throw, that's assuming you didn't put one inside a 15 meter reflector. Filament: 'Classic.' A usable, but outdated option for portable lighting. There are some cases where filaments are ideal.About ten lumens per watt in portable voltages, several dozen hours bulb life. Sensitive to vibration, higher power use (Lower output or lower runtime), dims a lot with weak batteries. Rarely has multiple modes, good reach possible. Higher voltage = better performance. Fluorescent: Faded since the 90s. About 50 lumens per watt, several hundred hours bulb life. Less sensitive to vibration, glass tubes can break when dropped. Usually regulated output (Suddenly clicks off on weak batteries, won't turn on again easily). Rarely has multiple modes, very low reach possible. Usually configured as a lantern. LED: The best choice in portable lighting for general use. 100 lumens per watt, several thousand hours bulb life. Very vibration-resistant, although the electronic circuits can break with heavy abuse. The switch and batteries are often the weakest part of LED lights. Regulated or non (Gradual dimming or sudden darkness), often has multiple modes, can have great reach or flood. Spotlight, floodlight, flashlight, lantern. HID/Short Arc: More 'exotic' lamps with qualities that enable excellent control over the beam shape. 100 lumens per watt, several hundred hours bulb life. Very vibration-resistant, the bulb is fairly difficult to break by dropping. Always regulated, usually has one or two modes, highest throw possible. Carbide: I have never used carbide lamps. The acetylene generators can be moody and the flame can be dangerous to your (Or your ropes). But they kept people alive in mines for almost a century, give good color rendering, and have sensible reach for helmet-lamp use. (Please take carbide in a drain, I'd love to see that!)
