Sunset Mine, Anyone?

I've been wanting to take a trip to the Sunset Mine (http://www.ghostto...m/Sunset_Mine.html), and this is a good example of a situation in which I would feel a little more at ease being in a group rather than alone. And, being new to the area, I'd like to meet and get to know some of you local explorers.

Is anyone interested in planning a trip out there with me in the near future?

Just PM me or reply to thread, and we'll get the ball rolling.

EDIT: Also, my wife and I are hiking out to the abandoned mining town of Monte Cristo today, and I might be able to scope out some of those mines to see if there are any interesting, extensive, and accessible ones. Probably won't explore them today, but I'd be happy to go back with a group to one or more of those locations as well.

How was your hike to Monte Cristo? We did that last weekend... didn't see any of the mines, though.

Yeah, Monte Cristo was a good time and quite relaxing.

I came with a map of the historical mine entrances on my phone, but we wandered around for a while without successfully finding any of them. We started a little late in the day, so we didn't have many hours of daylight left to hike around the old mining area by the time we had gone the original four miles. Also, out of the many mines, we couldn't be sure which ones were still accessible, and not caved in or purposefully closed.

I do know that most if not all of the ones that remain accessible are slated to be closed by the preservation society in 2013-2014, so I want to try to get inside them this summer or next.

I spent most of my search-time searching for the Justice Mine, under the impression that it was still accessible and one of the most extensive ones. I got to the area along the mountainside where it was supposed to be, and hiked up and down the slope searching for the entrance, but it wasn't immediately obvious. If I go back, I'll bring my machete or some other large blade for cutting through the vegetation that covered most of the slope and was probably shielding the entrance from my sight.

EDIT: If anybody needs the mine map, PM me. Just keep me in the loop if you find one of the entrances. Or invite me along if you want help searching; I'd be happy to go back.

EDIT 2: Looking at these photos (http://www.2drx.com/2004/Justice/) I see how very close I was when we stopped. It looks like it would be easily accessed if we just had an earlier start. Looks like a return trip is definitely in order.

Here is my 6/26/11 video from Sunset:

http://www.youtube...atch?v=9oMtU_aqUwQ - it's long, so skip ahead by twenty minutes or so if you want to see the impassably loose and dangerous rappel.

Attempting to get into the lower levels of Sunset proved to be some of the most dangerous time I've spent on rope in my life. We didn't make it down. Still a very very cool site - but be careful.

I've PM'ed you about exploring together sometime.
