I am thinking of going to North State Hospital sat. What is the best way into it and is there any hazards I should be worried about?

Yes. There is a park to the East, with a lot of cool old structures to look at. It used to be where the crazies play (er work.) There is a river separating the hospital grounds from the park and you're going to want to cross that river by following the path north of the farm.
If you look on a map the only buildings that are abandoned are on "hub drive" To the south there is a recovery center, (you can see the fence around it) And to the north is a work camp for young men and women. The steam plant is still active.

I'd say just keep a low profile, They might send out a van to look for you if your seen.
I've heard of them offering tours for a fee.

I don't have any info on getting into the buildings. Have a fun trip.

If ur heading down sr20 then checkout concrete too... since Dan passed away its impossible to get a tour of ns, and they dont take kidly to photographers or visitors... with exception of the farm... as its truely abandoned.

I had attended the tour and then when my hardrive crashed I lost all the pictures It was very interesting though. They've done an amazing job revitalizing most of the old buildings. They can't really find a use for the main hospital building though. I think they'd have to gut the inside and redo the floor plan to make it useful for anything other than a 20th century crazy house.

DAHP has been contacted repeatedly for information about future tours of the Northern State Hospital, and we have just learned of the following events to mark the 100 year anniversary:

The Northern State Hospital Campus is closed to the public however, we will be having the 100 year anniversary of the campus. The events are as follows:

Sept 15: FREE TO EVERYONE..10 am to 2 pm. Free tours, displays, book signings, videos, and much more. Bring your cameras and come learn all about the Hospital. Nice way to spend a day with your family at a great price. FREE

Judy has been working on getting ready for this for 2 months searching through the closed buildings and finding many treasures to share with you. Please come. We also have ADA Parking and Restrooms. Bring everyone.

Well that was a waste of time. Not only were no buildings open but the church (as you stated), but the tour was read word-for-word very unenthusiastically by teens who didn't know how to pronounce half the words they were reading. And the photo tour included everyone being forced to go to the same building, getting in each other's way, and keeping us from going to the back of any of the buildings to take photos (let alone inside). So pointless.

That's such a shame........but thanks for making me feel better about missing it....lol. I figured it was too good to be true - - - but you never know unless you actually go, I guess.

I was also disappointed. Still not sure why I couldn't walk around the building to take pictures (possible POE back there?). I thought when they said the church would be open that would at least be nice to see some history but the had setup so much crap that it ruined any pics of the space. I did make it up to a building above northern state that I always wanted to know what it was. Appears to be their reservoir, its massive complete with rope swing.

Nothing in pic to put it in perspective. But it is very large and deep.

And now I feel better about the 50 bucks I spent to see the one and only photo tour. We saw all the buildings but a couple. Too bad the caretaker died otherwise there would still be tours. They just basically opened the doors and you could go wherever. Cept the steam tunnels b/c of silent alarms they didn't want people tripping.

I lucked out after a ton of effort and perseverance. I was able to convince Dan after months of correspondence that I was well intended and interested in the history of the hospital. He gave me a tour with one friend. I was able to get another tour, but this was with a few other people (one was writing a book and a few "ghost hunterish" like people). We were able to roam many of the buildings, the entire grounds (the grounds on our own). The second time it was a woman that gave us a tour. She was very informative. I sensed that Dan and many of the 'oldtimers' there had strong connections to the hospital when it was active, so they seemed pretty guarded about information and their own connections to the hospital when it was active. The second time around, the woman who had moved to the area and had no connection to the hospital when it was active provided so much more information and answered any question presented. She discussed the old pharmacy that she'd uncovered within the last few months. It was a room that had never been opened (no one had a key). There was goo coming out from under the door, so they had to break in. Talk about decaying old medications - hazardous waste. It had been cleaned up when she showed us the room. There was a cabinet in the hallway with labels of the old school medications that had been stored in it. I didn't have a good camera or a tripod then - talk about regrets. I did take a bunch of pics though....

Awesome!!... I did a tour through the Dairy Lands and was asking Dan about the pump house during one of the "old" tours and he mentioned that it was up in the hills... I never have gone back to go looking, I sorta figured it was on the hospital lands portion and not the dairy... Thanks for the pic, it was almost exactly as Dan mentioned, Im still pissed he kicked, he did so much for NSH, and for history, Hopefully one day there will be a change in management and things will become a little more interesting again,
