| | | Abandoned Oregon < on 9/1/2012 2:54 AM >
| | | About a year ago I moved here from Baltimore, Md and haven't been exploring since. For some reason, maybe it's the new camera, I'm getting the itch again to lace up the hiking boots, hop in the cat and go wandering. I've been doing preliminary research, and from what I can tell Oregon is not the best habitat for the Explorer in me. Now, I refuse to believe there's nothing out there. I realize it won't be as promising as the east coast, but there's got to be something. Now I realize people might not want to help me but I have 2 places I want to shoot before I give up the game: A Ghost town An Abandoned Church If anyone has any leads it would be greatly appreciated. of course I'm open to all locations big and small, but I thought I'd put out my holy grail just in case. In the mean time it's off to hit the back roads and scour the google maps.

| | | Well, I dove into the UE DB today and ventured out to both Antelope and Shaniko. Definite passes on both counts. Antelope was the first stop. Some interesting dilapidated buildings. An old jail house and a couple racist hillbilly types. They gave me a full lecture on the dangers of Portland putting fluoride in the water. The old school house had potential, but from a peek in the windows it looks as though they're trying to renovate it. But that may be an abandoned project due to the building permit posted being from 04. Shaniko was even worse. Biker tourist trap. Not to mention it was a 3 hours trek from PDX so not worth it. Although the scenery is rather pretty.

Do the research. There is plenty to explore, and you passed by a great deal of it on the way out to Shaniko and Antelope.

That was definitely one of my biggest mistakes. I was so hungry for the adventure that I didn't fully research the area. In fact, I didn't realize it was going to be a 3 hour trek there until after I was on my way. #NoobMove for sure. Oh well, you live and you learn and it was a beautiful day so nothing wasted except gas and the $40 I lost at the casino as a pit stop.

| | | New to the area here too...though I'm in Albany. There must be some old sawmills and ghost towns out here somewhere. There just isn't ANYTHING online. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. In other news...hit the old greyhound station in Portland today...what is up with THAT place???

| | | You're not looking hard enough. Yesterday, I explored two pre-civil war homesteads south of Corvallis. It was fantastic.

The greyhound station has people living inside as caretakers (read NOT abandoned). I have hung out there a few times and we had a huge party there this last winter. I will just say that they are very protective of the place and have 4 dogs 2 of which are pits so be careful. When we were partying there the dogs had to be locked up even though we were friendlies.

They probably shouldn't leave their door wide open when they leave the house. I knew the access was too good to be true. No people or dogs in sight but had a feeling someone was using the place.

| | | Okay Captain Fancy Pants, mind teaching a couple guys to fish? Bread crumbs to how you locate some of these spots? Maps? Historical Records? Aimless driving around the country side? I'm not trying to ask for a hand out of an exact location, but a nudge in the general direction. Much appreciated. M.

i am the other yourself. "Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name. Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors. The voice might be one and the same. I've heard it too many times to ignore it. It's something that I'm supposed to be." http://www.flickr....orers/collections/ |

| | | Eastern Oregon has some alright stuff, nothing too exciting but if you're out this way it might be worth checking out. I'm pretty sure there is an Oregon ghost towns book you can get.
