Aside from dangerously phantom guard rails, chromatic aberration and distortion, not bad for Microsoft ICE auto-stitching. [last edit 7/18/2012 12:48 AM by Crypton - edited 1 times]

| | | Best set so far, Crypton. The opening shot gives us a nice view of the entire complex. Number 7 is like being on the inside of a spider or something from star wars. And the stairs shots give a great sense of height and how wet it is outside. Too bad the other fucknuts on here had to ruin this thread with their childish bickering. so typical.

there is an underground tunnel there about that size.. i believe that is what u235 said it was used for. -madcap

| | | Like madcap said, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) was used to create the 12' ventilation tunnels that would carry the heat away from the generators/turbines to the cooling towers.

Umm.. actually they do confined space training at the site the TBm has nothing to do with the reactor construction

| | | It is my understanding that the TBM was to be used to bore two tunnels to the river. To refill the cooling towers with cool water. The cooling towers go through a vast amount of water and the 12' dia tunnels would be a inlet and outlet for for circulating river water. I think it was one of the highly debated part of the 'Whoops' project. Must nuke plants are much closer to the water source but the TBM would have to travel the mile plus to the river, twice. Once the project ended, it was left as is as well. It was a long time ago, I could be a little fuzzy on the exact details. I just liked the patina and could not resist getting a ton of shots of it and the segments. You do not just find a TBM just laying about. But the same can be said of an uncompleted, unused nuke plant. [last edit 8/4/2012 7:13 AM by Phule - edited 1 times]

Shamefully I hadn't climbed much in a while and we did 30 something flights the night before and this was the last part of the tour, after climbing all over the reactor building I was beat ... took me about 25 minutes stopping at every landing to rest. I was afraid my legs were going to seize up on me (which has happened before, my legs completely locked up on a long, 30 mile, 100 degree bike ride). I could barely walk but I wouldn't let my grail get away from me, haha. Fought through it, it took less than five minutes going back down. I could probably have done it in 5-10 if I was at peak.

Really!? This was not a commercial, paid tour, this was a very loosely guided tour that was organized through a connection with the company. This tour was the kind of thing that we, as explorers, should WANT to see; people actually appreciating the incredible industrial infrastructure around us. Also, wait for these pictures to come up so you can start drooling.
|
Oh man, I was away trekking about in central asia for a month and totally forgot about this. I'm certainly drooling over the photos and in no way diminishing the appeal of the powerplant. In fact I'd love to see this place and will probably seek it out next I'm in the States. I'm just not the sort to be calling tours exploring, as was done on the first page of the thread. Yes, Stan sounds awesome and the kind of caretaker/whatever we like to meet. Yes, I still think it's a tour. Yes, I would take this tour. Yes, Satsop looks sick.
