I'm more or less happy with out current set up. Maybe it's because I don't have to go far to find out I'm the only one. Tons of people are RSVPing as 'yes' and then they don't show or bother to change their RSVP to 'no'.

I could understand the frustration of someone who needs to drive in from outside the city, or bus/hike across the city to SGR only to find out they're drinking coffee alone.

No day is better for me than Sunday. Saturday is OK, but I'm far more likely to have prior engagements on Saturdays vs. Sundays.

I think I'm going to post a new thread with a poll, asking what day people'd find best to have a meet on. (There'll also be an option for 'no, I can't/won't' or something along those lines). Then depending on what responses are received, possibly do as Sonikgirl suggested.

haha I did kind of steal your original discussion topic, sorry about that.

I'm willing to attend your meeting if you can make it happen. I agree with TriBeachPunk, Sunday afternoons are best for me too.

Well, I'm not yet willing at this point to put anything in the Events page. I don't know if there'd be anybody to RSVP, plus, it'd be the exact same thing as with the current Halifax Meet event listing. People'd RSVP (a few, I suppose), one or two show up, and then nothing would come of it. I first want to see some interest, get people's opinions, figure out what day is best (which still seems to be at this point, Sunday), and then possibly post something.

I'm not yet willing to commit to a meet myself if nobody's gonna show up. I'm gonna let this brew for a big longer before taking any decisive action.

I dont have a lot of insight on the topic. I would like to attend a meeting at some point, but clearly they need to be figured out. Sundays work, doesnt matter which Sunday it is, your going to have some people show up or maybe none. Not everyone works Mon-Fri with weekends off. fortunately I do, but I have long weeks, and my weekends are valuable to me. So when I could be out exploring (or lack of..), I dont want to show up to a meet and hear about how good it was to explore locations that are now demolished (jealousy..). It would be good to meet a few urbex enthusiasts, do the whole "tell us about yourselves" deal, and go out and explore, but to where?? PPP? YR? radar? Besides, I dont know how excited I am to explore locations in larger groups.

So heres what I think.. have a meet where you can get a bunch of people together, over coffee, do introductions, find out who clicks with who, say a few words and part ways. This will allow users on here to put faces and personalities to usernames.

And when something big comes up, factory shuts down, school relocates or whatever, then that will be a reason for a "MEET". Discuss dangers, obstacles, etc.. Otherwise, what is the purpose for the meets? I've been to group meetings before, but not for urbex.. so please enlighten me if Im completely missing the purpose.

First & Foremost, welcome to UrbEx.
Glad to hear this kind of feedback, it's exactly the kind of perspective I'm hoping to dig out of people. A lot of what you said flows nicely into some of the things I'm about to ask. I haven't started and you're already halfway done haha

So, I'm back. Sorry about the delay, and thanks to everyone who gave feedback previous. I'm pretty hopeful that we have the ideas to improve the monthly meetings between us, and we should be able to bring them out.

To recap: I asked about the time and location of the monthly meets. People are fine with the first Sunday of the Month, at Just-Us on Spring Garden. At least, people see it as the best of our options.
TriBeachPunk came up with an excellent idea to reserve a space for the meeting, since seating is often a problem when we get there. I'm going to call Just-Us and try to hold the upstairs room for the May 6 meet.

So we come to a meeting, we're all sitting at a table looking at each other. Now What?

These questions are a lot more philosophical than the previous questions. It's really about identifying the sorts of things you specifically might see as improvement areas. Try to think of them through the perspective of what you want meetings to be, not based on what they are now. You'll probably find that we all hope for the same things from meetings, and there are likely things we could realistically be able to accomplish.

1 - Think of a 'good' UrbEx meeting that you were at. What made it good for you? What did you like about the meeting? What topics were discussed? Was there anything you didn't like about it?

2 - When you came to your first meeting, what were you expecting? What were you visualizing in your head (other than more people haha)? What would you like to see happen for every new person who shows up?

3 - Would you be interested in longer-term activities with specific goals? For example, getting GPS coordinates for some locations that you can't easily find on Google Maps. If yes, what sort of long-term activities would interest you?

4 - Though we're all interested in the same thing in an overall sense, there's a lot of specific things we like to explore: For example, Some of us are into old military ruins, where some of us find abandoned houses the most exciting.
Would you be interested in identifying yourself based on separate interest categories like this? If yes, what categories would you use to organize the separate groups? The goal would be to make it easier for you to organize individual outings for yourself, since you would immediately know who would be most likely to join you with whatever you're exploring.

4 - If you were organizing UrbEx meetings, and you knew you would have 10 attendants each month, what would you organize for the meetings? Pretend you have some access to supplies like paper & pen etc. Sky's the limit. (i know this sounds like a silly thing to ask you to do. It pays off later, trust me haha.)

I really want to, and should be at this meeting. I am going to make my best efforts to make my way down to Halifax for this Sunday, however my chances are not looking great. My car is off the road currently, alternator died and it lost its inspection.

Are there any explorers in the Valley who intend to or would be interested in going to this meet and may be willing to take someone along (i.e. me)...

I'm actually going to be in the valley until Sunday morning, but i'm not going back down there afterwards. So I help you 50%, if that's worth anything to you.

So, I'm currently in the HRM, staying at a friend's place. If I'm not too hungover tomorrow, I'll head out to Halifax for the visit. Hope to see some folks there.

Cheers

Edit:

Will anybody from the Bedford area be going to the visit?

Thanks for opening this up publicly! This was the kinda thing I've been looking for. If you're looking for new members, I'm in. (I'm completely noobish here)
The thing is, I would just prefer to become a bit more situated here, and get to know people better before I show up at meetings in person. But once that happens, I'll be showing up on scheduled meets for sure.
Since I live in Dartmouth, Just-Us is a swell location for me.

Welcome to UrbEx! I'm always glad to see more people here.
The monthly meeting mostly serves as a way to meet new people, so it's fine to come out as a n00b. However, this month the meeting happens to fall on Canada Day so I doubt anyone will be there.

If you'd like to Private Message me, we can probably arrange a separate meeting before the August meet, and I can take you on a quick tour of a couple locations. I'd suggest you start by checking out the UE Data Base, and maybe you'll get an idea about the kind of locations you find interesting.

tbeckerson : Eh thanks! That'd be super awesome of you. I'm just trying to scrounge up the money for a much better camera than my last, since my Rebel XS got stolen this spring. I don't want to do any exploring until I get a camera in my hands. But a quick tour would be awesome!

I've already done this, So I've found out what interests me. (:

So, just a quick update, I'm back in the area again, living in Hammonds Plains once more. I'm going to (once again) put in a legitimate effort to make it to the August meet. Hopefully I'll see some folks there. But I won't make any promises, I am guilty of constantly saying I'll go and not showing up.

We'll see what happens.

Hey! I've been away from this site for the last two years but I've been living in Halifax for the last while and would love to come out to a meeting or two. I travel a lot and grew up in the yukon and if anyone's interested could talk your ear off about the 1898 gold rush, or miner's cabins and shipwrecked paddlewheelers...
I just figured I'd express interest in hopes of motivating a meet up or two. That being said, the message bot just informed me that I recently missed one and I wish I'd come back to this site a month earlier. Cheers!
