If you don't appreciate the forums, and would rather just use the LBD then do that, and ignore your premium featueres.

Sounds like a good idea. Why didn't I think of that ? Oh wait, it's what I've been doing.

Posted by F A S T
If you don't even value the existance of the boards why are you posting here?

I'm posting here because the issue is about donations [Not the forums specifically] - money that is used to fund both the forums AND the LDB. And the point I was making is that even if the premium features are of no value to you whatsoever - you should still donate [As I do].

In no way was I insulting Av.. I was just spelling out that Premium is not a SERVICE that you buy if you need it - it's a THANK YOU that you get when you donate. And you should donate if you can.

Hope that's clear now.

I for one do not even want to hear your opinion if your best interest is ONLY got the LBD in mind and not for the forums as a whole.

If you take a bit more time to read and UNDERSTAND the opinion I am putting forth it may hold more interest to you.

Or not... Either way I'll be sure and not loose any sleep.

Its clear, I wasn't speaking directly to you there, but to the people who were complaining about receiving features and asking to not have them.

Since the LBD and the forums are intertwined for your own sake I would look at both. Heres one example (of many) good locations you can find here. I honestly used to launch search's for kowalski's posts just to see his photography

http://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread_archive.asp?fid=1&threadid=3702&currpage=1&pp#post0

I did not mean to level a personal attack against you.

Cool.. Hope that didn't sound snappy or nippy.

You are 100% correct - I should take more of an interest in the forums.. And have been a little over the last couple of weeks...

I just got put off early on I suppose.

Ah well!

Was about to reply but all I can think of is this;
can't even type straight.

I thought that the site should be sponsored in some way. I geuss that got nixed. I appreciate this premium membership but can't even figure out how to access it's features.
Suddently this feels like the card you would get at a Casino in Vegas.
I dontated randomly, because I felt I should do my part for a well run site rthat I enjoyed. I liked the donor star because others knew that someone else was paying to have the site hosted.
Memmership? dumb idea; you have enough probs with exclusivity here.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

i could see paying 5 bucks a year to subscribe to this site. but letting people check the site out free of charge for a month with limited features until they subscribe... i.e. allow them to view posts, but they cant post... and allow them to view public locations.

this way alot of those people who pretend to be explorers and come on here tricking us when infact they are the property owners in disquise will not really be able to do much unless they pay (which they arent likely going to do)

I could see myself dropping because the only way I could pay that (anonymously) is sending the money in a letter to Av

After readin' through a few posts in this thread, I had a few thoughts on it all.

I've donated twice now - the first time before the premium features, and again just recently (although I'd forgotten about the features). I Paypal`d over $10usd to UER - not because of any added features...but simply because I consider the website a very worthy endeavour and a noble cause worth contributing to.

As someone who runs commercial websites, I'm all-too-familiar with the various costs involved. And although bandwidth and storage costs have dropped dramatically in the past year or so...there's still a considerable investment involved (not to mention time/labour).

I see some folks saying (to the effect) - "Why should I contribute $50 if all it takes is $5 to get premium features?"

To which I'd simply ask, "Why should Av spend his $50 towards providing you with a valuable and entertaining resource such as UER.ca?"

I don't mean to bitch out those who ask such questions, or come across as self-righteous simply because I've donated myself. I just wish some people would stop for a moment and think of the bigger picture sometimes before sounding off.

Frankly, I don't even make use of the premium features myself <shrug> - except the word-watch function. But that's just me. I donate because I enjoy having UER around - and would like to see its continued existence.

I'm curious as to the anonymity of donations. I would like to donate, but could really only do so in smaller quantities (AV stated he doesn't want small checks appearing anyway). A MO would be a huge pain. Cash is a bad idea. I do paypal for a lot of purchases, but don't want my bank account associated with UER in any way. Are there any options for anonymous donating? I'm not particularly concerned with premium member features or anything, but would just like to contribute what I can to the site.

I appreciate your desire to contribute.

I accept small cash donations mailed to my P.O. box, preferably in canadian currency but any currency is fine. But if you mail me 2 HK dollars, it will probably just end up sitting on my shelf, since that's worth about 20 cents and it's not worth it to find a bank and exchange it.

Thanks!

Is donating $5. US the same as donating $6 CA? Should I add a little extra to cover taxes?

Premium membership is really only through paypal -- I really don't want to get small cheques every month.

If you don't have paypal, it means you don't have a bank account or a credit card and couldn't write cheques anyway.

Does paypal work without a credit card? Just a chequing account?

Since you are in Canada, you might prefer an Interac® Email Money Transfer.

That way, without any hassle, from your normal bank account, you can send money to anyone else with a Canadian bank account without needing any account numbers or other hassles, all you need is an email address. It uses the same Interac system as your purchases at retail stores, so it is safe, and the fee is only 1.50$ per transfer.

The following link will show you step-by-step how to perform an Interac Email Money Transfer for all major Canadian banks.

I see nothing wrong with having an UER Premium Membership established as long as it provides services not already available and does not resort to be a means to remove or limit access to anything we already have had access to.

I know many seem to thrive on the little icons below their User Name and some are so very proud of them. (it's like witnessing the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts trying to get as many badges as they can)....BUT...It's shown it's negative impact one too many times too. I've witnessed members with the Donor Star put down other members who have not donated in way to make them sound like they are better than they cuz they have donated. Donations are great for whatever the cause, but self gratification should be enough for anyone and not use a little cartoon icon as a tool to belittle anyone who hasn't. I also believe such behaviour shouldn't be tolerated.

I think Av should have an online form that needs to be filled out with options for members to check off. A form that can be sent via online or a printable version.

Options such as....

A one time donation with no Premium Membership.

A one time payment to cover X numbers of months for the UER Premium Membership.

Option to have the icon shown or not shown.

Payment option chosen.

Then there should be an automated email generated to a current email address with a thank you and confirmation the order has been received. Maybe letting it state that they will be notified via email that their money has been received and the new membership has now been established.

Just some of my thoughts on this...you can take it or leave it.

It's already fully automated. When you make a donation via PayPal, you gain immediate Premium Membership for one month. If you don't like it, you don't have to use any of the features.

If you *REALLY* don't want the trophy icon, I can remove it for you.
