|  | | | Anyone up for a visit on Sunday morning to a defunct hydroelectric project east of Portland? We have room for 1, maybe 2 additional folks (unless you drive yourself, in which case the more the merrier).
There used to be two dams, three concrete tunnels (one over a mile long) and a long flume. The dams and flume have been removed, the reservoir drained, and the tunnels "blocked off to humans" but still open for bat habitat. To me, that seems to indicate the tunnels are accessible, but it's not certain. The powerhouse is still present, but might be secured/watched. So, this might end up just being a bunch of hiking!

| | | | I dunno, from what I have seen, those tunnels are pretty well sealed off. And by that I mean with "concrete plugs". I think the "bat access" is really just a small hole in the concrete that would allow a bat to access the tunnel. In other words, it's a three inch hole in a concrete plug. Good luck squeezing into that.
BTW, the tunnels that carried the little Sandy where only 24" pipe. perhaps not what you had imagined.
As far as the rest of the remains of the project, the only thing worth while is the Powerhouse, which, is in the process of becoming a museum.
If you go, let me know if you see any springers in the river, since it's been rumored that they are spawning again in the upper reaches of that river.

| | | | Yep. We went today, and it's not much to see other than the powerhouse. Didn't look like anybody was around, though. We didn't have time to find the longest tunnel, but we did find that the tunnel to the lake (the shortest, and probably largest diameter one) has been buried.
When you say 24-inch pipe, are you thinking of the long tunnel from southern dam, or the diversion coming from the north dam? I was under the impression that tunnel brought most of the water contained in the flume (which was of considerable size), so should have been pretty big. Oh well; if it's small, I'm super glad we didn't spend more time on it!
The river was pretty nice in itself. I don't know what springers are. But we did see some funny bugs crawling around on the bottom, and some crayfish and salamanders.

As far as I remember, the outfall pipe from the flume to the lake was 24" or maybe 36", but like I said, not very big. Same from what I remember from the diversion dam at the beginning of the flume. I do believe that the canal that used to run from the upper dam was a bit bigger, but really it's been many years since I went up there, and they have pretty much removed all of the neat stuff. I found that out a few months ago when I wanted to take a hike along the old flume, and discovered it was gone!

Oh okay. Nope, didn't see any fish -- but there was a fish trap/counter up by the north dam site. Oh well, another potentially cool area marked off the list ...
