any one want to go caving this week?

Hey, there's a cave/lava tube in Gifford Pinchot NF (washington) that I wanna check out this week. Anyone wanna go? I have room for 2 or maybe 3 (if you don't mind sidling up to a dog), leaving from pdx. Takes about 1.5 hrs to get there. Any day is fine with me with the exception of Friday (tues thru thurs). I've been in it a tiny bit and its hella big, if I remember right, > 1 mile linearly. If you wanna go, email bwadyka AT gmail.com, I check it pretty often and will get back with you shortly.

I can't, but having bee there will offer up this advice: bring a lantern because flashlights don't do anything.

Do you need climbing gear to access this particular cave?

I'd be all over that but apparently the 146 mi would take me 4 hours 22 mins to traverse according to Google maps? to be fair i think its directing me to the center of the NF but still.

It's north of Stabler, if that helps you.

So I just got back from the cave and it's an awesome cave, very long with several junctions going in different directions. But I'll be going back on Monday as I left my memory card out of the camera.

As an added bonus though, as I was leaving, I heard some noise in the woods a couple hundred yards out. I had seen a couple cow elk on my way to the cave so I figure it's some elk or maybe if I'm lucky, a bear. So I start creeping toward it as quietly as I can with a rambunctious dog. I finally get to where I start seeing flashes of movement in the trees, but still can't make out what animal it might be. It's making noises like it's hitting something, so I think maybe it's a bull elk sparring on some poor sapling, but it's not the rut. So maybe it's a bear smacking a tree stump to get at grubs. I keep inching closer until I can finally see what it is. A person. I couldn't tell what he was doing out there, but I got out of there as quickly and quietly as possible. There is no way that dude wasn't up to no good. There was no car anywhere nearby, so either he parked far away or he walked or rode a bike there; both of which indicate he had a good reason to go out all that way. So, my guesses are dead body/rich stuff a la DB Coopers stash/small-time grow-op. Either way, come Monday, I'm packing heat and heading out there to find out what's over there and to get the cave pics. So, if anyone wants to come along, I'll think about splitting the rich stuff with you.

i will be there with two in tow, at approximately 12:00pm - 12:30pm. i may be there a bit sooner than that as these are pretty much worst case scenario numbers.
can't wait, in just a few short hours the fun begins.

so i came i saw i conquered, didn't see you there noah but i have no idea if you got my message about being there around noon. i ended up getting there at about 12:35-12:40 and left around 3 or so. it was fun, just haven't managed to make it home to work on the pictures i got. although bit of advice for anyone thinking about going down, if its raining it will be a wet, slimy experience. it is possibly the least dslr friendly environment i can think of. also the complete lack of light was slightly unsettling at times and made focusing a very challenging process. i'll put up the pictures after i get home.

Sorry I missed you. I went today to follow up on what I saw in the woods. Some grass pulled up (possibly of animal origin..?) and some cut wood. No rich stuff. I didn't bother with taking photos since I've come to the conclusion that 3 people are needed. I did go to another cave in central OR this weekend though.

Does anyone know how to read those road signs? Found 'em in the Deschutes NF, if that helps.

Best resource for caves in Washington: http://www.amazon....=1339041547&sr=8-1

It's long out of print but some libraries have reference copies

I miss living down there and caving. Falls Creek cave was my favorite. I used to have an ambitious goal of hitting every cave in the book, but never did. Some have been dynamited or otherwise closed off but a lot are still there. Finding them is half the fun. Cheese Cave near Trout Lake is also a fun one with unique history and a cabin on top of one entrance. Reminded me of something out of Scooby Doo.
